John Hughes Slopestyle – Rider Guide

RIDER GUIDE
We are thrilled to have you competing in the inaugural John Hughes Slopestyle!
Two MTB events will be taking place as part of the John Hughes Slopestyle; an Urban DH Race and
the Crossfit 6100 MTB Slopestyle. All the relevant information for both of these events is contained in
this rider guide, including details of parking, the schedule and the afterparty.
PARKING
A carpark close-by to the event site is reserved for rider parking. This parking area is accessed from
Baillie Avenue.
Please follow the direction of the parking volunteers from Crack Cycling. Parking in this area requires
a gold coin donation to their cause.
AT THE EVENT
Start your day by visiting the Plate Collection tent. Here you will be able to sign in and collect your
race plate and rider wrist band.
Ensure you put your wrist band on immediately - this wrist band will gain you access into the fenced
off Rider Village (not to mention access to the bar tab at the after party).
A range of food will be available from the TGIF Hawkers Markets on-site from 12:00 to 5:00pm.
RIDER VILLAGE
Inside the gated area around Edward Millen House is the rider village. This area will feature;




Tents for shade
Seating
Free Red Bull and water
Bike Parking
URBAN DH RACE FORMAT
If you are competing in the Urban DH Race, the day will begin with a practice session for you to learn
the course. Every rider must complete a minimum of one practice run.
Riders will then each complete a seeding run. The outcome of this run will determine the starting
order for the final.
Each rider will then have one final run to lay down the fastest possible time. Final results will be
based on this time.
The Urban DH Race is split into two classes – PRO and AM.
CROSSFIT 6100 SLOPESTYLE FORMAT
If you are competing in the Crossfit 6100 Slopestyle, the day will begin with a practice session for
you to learn the course and practice your tricks. Every rider must complete a minimum of one
practice run.
In Round 1 each rider will have two runs. The judges will use the best score from the two runs. The
top 20 riders will progress through to Round 2.
In Round 2 each rider will have two runs. The judges will use the best score from the two runs. The
top 10 riders will progress through to the Final.
In the Final each rider will have two runs to record the best score possible.
The judging criteria will assess riders based on both style and tricks. Don’t feel that you don’t have a
chance because you can’t do any big tricks, the judges will also be looking for style, fluidity and
height off the jumps.
The Crossfit 6100 MTB Slopestyle features only one class.
THE COURSE
The course is ~150m in length and packed full of features, including the Albany Urban DH car jump,
sea containers, wall rides, doubles and a raised boardwalk.
Course builder Paul Neve of 3 Chillies Trail Design and Construction has described the course as ‘a
cross between a set of dirtjumps and a skatepark, laid out down a slope’.
The course is designed to work for hardtails, trail bikes and downhill bikes, so we recommend
selecting the bike you feel the most comfortable on.
