With great patriotic fervour, PEC
University of Technology celebrated the Republic Day on 26
January 2015 which marked the
66th anniversary of the adoption
of the Indian Constitution.
The event commenced with the
flag hoisting by the Director Dr.
Manoj Arora followed by the
National Anthem sung by one
and all. Deputy Director Prof.
Sanjccv Sofat, Dean Students
Affairs Dr. Perminderjit Singh,
Dean Academic Affairs Dr.
Praveen Kalra, Dr. Divya Bansal
and Prof. Mccna Mahajan along
with other faculty and staff
members were present during
the event.
Addressing the gathering the Director highlighted the recent developments in institute.

Since the time of its inception in
November last year, the Office
of Alumni Affairs at the institute
is working progressively to
come in close contact with its
Alumni based abroad and in
India. The mission of this office
is to fulfill the aspirations and
dreams of PEC Alumni for its
Alma Mater. Need of this office
has always been felt but ice
breaking effort was done by the ~
present Director and Alumnus
Dr. Manoj K Arora. The office
has initiated a drive to bring
alumni back to the institute for
their
intellectual,
technical,
academic and financial support.

of 1967 batch visited campus.

The department of Electronics and
Communication Engineering
organized an expert lecture on "Frontiers in
Magnetic recording research: vision
for 10 Tcrabits/inch"" on I 0th December 2014 in the conference hall which
was attended by a gathering of approximately 90 enthusiastic UG, PG, PhD
students and Faculty members from
various departments. The lecture was
delivered by Dr. Charanjit Singh
Bhatia, Professor, ECE Department of
National University Singapore (NUS).,
Singapore. Prof. Bhatia discussed
about the state-of-art technological advancements to increase the storage capacity of a Hard disk drive upto
10 Terabits/inch2. He further demonstrated the latest research activities on
spin dependent transport in various
materials which can be utilized for
magnetically storing the digital data
for future hard disk drives. The lecture
was highly enlightening particularly
for the younger generation of engineers and researchers to understand
the technological innovations taking
place in the field, around the world.
Dr. Nccna Gupta, Head, ECE Department said that this is an initiative towards establishing academic tic-ups
and encouraging collaborative research initiatives with National University Singapore.

(MIT), USA delivered an expert lecture on "Big Insights from Big data"
on 19th Jan 2015 organized by the
Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh. The
lecture was attended by a large no. of
UG students, Research scholars and
faculty of ECE department. Dr. Nccna
Gupta, Head, ECE Deptt motivated the
students to get benefited from the experiences of illustrious alumnus of the
institute. Dr. Dhillon explained about
Big Data that is a large collection of
data sets which becomes difficult to
process using traditional data processing applications. He described the
growth of data sets due to increase in
various data collection devices like
mobile devices,
remote sensing,
radio-frequency identification (RFID)
readers, and wireless sensor networks
etc. Dr. Paramvccr completed his MS
and PhD from University of Pennsylvania, USA. The lecture was highly
enlightening for undergraduate students to understand the technology innovations taking place in the field.

CHORDS
The Music Club of PEC roared its presence to the freshmen with one of their
biggest events 'Chords' held on 21 October 2014.Thc annual event of the
club provides the new recruits with a
platform to showcase their talent. The
foot tapping performances included all
genres ranging from Bollywood to
Rock. The highlights of the event were
"Let it go", "Kala Chan" and "Jiycin
Kyun". The dignitaries present for the
event were Director Dr. Manoj Arora,
Urnesh Sharma and Meena Mahajan.
AAGHAZ
PEC witnessed a fun-filled evening as
Natyamanch, the dramatics club of
PEC University of Technology, organized its flagship inaugural event with
the name AAGHAZ' 14. The event saw
the club's new recruits perform in as
many as five skits and eight dance performances. The direction of the skits
and the choreography of the dances
was done by second year students
under the supervision of the senior
members of the club. The skits focused on satire and moral values of the
society. The event showcased some
standout performances in the form of
comical acts and Bollywood dance
forms. The skits with the names 'B
Tech Vale Dulhania Le Jaycngc' &
'Chhotu Ka Sapna Money Money' enthralled the audience. The Chief Advisor Clubs Prof. Meena Mahajan
praised the students on their superb efforts in such a less time. Other faculty

Department of Computer Science and
Engineering organized Research Scholars Congregation, a one-day workshop
under Chandigarh Region Innovation
and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) on

Kumar Grover, Vice Chancellor,
Panjab University, inaugurated the
workshop and enlightened the participants with their valuable keynote addresses. Vice Chancellor, Panjab University enlightened the audience with
his insightful words. His address focused on inter-disciplinary
research
and value of computing in almost
every domain of science and engineering. According to him, Computer Science and Engineering is an expanding
research field dri vcn by emerging application domains which can be integrated with applied sciences and other
engineering fields to excel in research
and development.

workshop coordinator, Dr. Poonam
Saini, the idea was to create a common
interaction platform where researchers
from different institutes under CRIKC
could congregate and get acquainted

each other's
expertise

Computer Science and Engineering
domain. The research scholars got an
opportunity to discuss their research
ideas with co-researchers as well as
eminent personalities in order to
revitalize their innovation ability. The
workshop arranged the expert talks
from eminent professors as well as
offered an opportunity to participants
to present their ideas in the form of
posters.
The PEC University of Technology celebrated its annual Tcchno-Cultural fest
Hero PECFEST 2014 and witnessed a footfall of more than 5000 people from a
multitude of colleges from all over India. The fest started with the inauguration
ceremony wherein Dr. Manoj Arora, Director, provided highly inspirational
words and thereby declared the fest open. Celebrating Ekta Divas, a marathon
many more were organised. The day also saw students showcasing their artistic
talent in Bhangra Theque as well as Naach Meri Jaan - a dance competitions.

adrenaline rush unlike any it had seen before. With

renowned playback singer, on the stage, STAR NIGHT at PECFEST was the
zenith of the fest. Benny was a joy to listen to, as the last, crowning event of
PECFcst with his various hit and spirited songs running a surge of exhilaration
through the audience. With the whirlwind of soft melodies and peppy dance
numbers, he left the crowds mesmerized and shouting for an encore.

from more than hundred different colleges in the region come and take part in
various contests and competitions.
The
Dramatic win at IIT-B Fest
PEC University of Technology's Dramatics Club once again brought laurels
to the institute and the city when it
outdid all competition to emerge victorious at Asia's largest fest, the annual
cultural festival of llT Bombay, the biggest celebration of its kind, Mood
Indigo 2014 or Mood-I as it is popularly known as which was organized
from 26th-29th Dec in Mumbai.
They not only won the first prize in
street play and stage play competitions
but also bagged the awards for 'Best
team in Dramatics events', 'Best Contingent' and 'Overall 2nd Runners Up'.
The street play team was adjudged the
best out of a total of 85 teams from all
across the nation. Their thoughtprovoking take on redefining the
Indian Education System, 'Padhega
India tabhi toh Badhcga India' left everyone speechless. It involved making
the people aware of education schemes
like , 'Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan' and
many more. They challenged the virtues of the present state of the Indian
education system comparing it to the
yesteryears by picking up verses from
the Mahabharata.
The stage play team also performed
exceedingly well and emerged triumphant out of a total of 42 teams among
which only 5 had managed to make it
to the finals. The team consisting of
twelve members pcrfonncd a stage
play called, "Ashwathama" based on

again. The Dance team -TNVINCJ13LES participated in Centrifuge-western group dance competition at ITT
Kharagpur during Springf est' 15, the
annual cultural fest of fIT Kharagpur.
ln an interesting turn of events, the
team emerged victorious and bagged
first prize. The exhilarating performance enthralled the audience which
was present at the institute auditorium
in deluging figures. The members of
the team had been practicing intensively for 25 days braving the chilly
cold weather of December-January.
With no help from any professional the
senior members of the team choreographed a constant 10 min song
track.The people at the auditorium was
so overwhelmed that they were at the
edge of their scats throughout the performance and gave a standing ovation
to the team members as a tribute to
their dazzling and heart-throbbing per-

the result of the competition. Ultimately the team was announced victorious
by the judges who happened to be the

form of art and the students from this
prestigious institute have been proving
lime and again that it's not only engineering that they pursue here. They are
also actively participating in other cocurricular activities and not just participating but also excelling in them, with
accolades coming from places even

couldn't get better than this! The student members of this club worked very
hard for these achievements and that
too after the study hours of the college
with constant support by their teachers,
faculty and other staff. The club hopes
to work with the same zeal and to better
its performance in the coming years.

Everyday Fears
She opens her eyes, still under the
protection
of
her
blankets.
Disorientation is momentary, after
which the reality of where she is and
what she has to face hits her. She
grimaces at the clock and sneaks a
couple of minutes more of oblivion.
However, after 5 minutes she has no
choice. She trips and runs through her
morning routine, swallows what seems
like stale bread for breakfast and gulps
a couple of sips of lukewarm, over
sweetened tea to get it all down.
Glancing at the clock, full blown panic
sets in and she rushes to her first hour
of hell. Sitting in the front row, she
plays the part of a studious pupil,
religiously pretending to take notes
while she really doodles in her
notebook. From time to time, she
breaks the facade and checks her
phone. Let there be a new message. A
ghost of a joke? A snippet of
conversation? Anything? But nothing
saves her from the continuous droning
of the teacher. To top it all on: time all
but stops. But eventually the first hour
ends, followed by the second, the third

ls this anger due to a sudden outburst
of religious sentiment or is this an incessant cycle of a preconceived notion
of dominance?
The Charlie Hebdo attacks on the 7th
of January, 2015 have sparked global
outrage with regards to the satirical
publications of the French magazine.
Questions have been raised on the artistic freedom ofjournalists and caricaturists and a large school of thought
seems to be siding with the 'offended'
parties. 111e Western world is currently
in a tangle due to this precarious situation. On the one side, the safely of journalists needs to be ensured and the confidence to practice their trade without
any inhibitions must be reinstated. Conversely, the onus is upon governments
around the world to find viable answers lo such erratic displays of religious retaliation.
We must, however, understand the reality behind the events of the fateful fortnight. Is this uproar actually because
people care about how the Muslims
feel after the publications or is due lo
an inherent fear of what an insulted
Muslim may do?
A very interesting aspect that has not
been touched upon by the multitudes interested in the situation is the identity
and background of the perpetrators,
Cherif and Said Kouachi. The Kouachi
brothers, born and brought up in
France, witnessed the suicide of their
mother at the lender ages of 10 and 12
respectively and were left to fend for
themselves. After moving through
foster families and orphanages, the
brothers found themselves in Yemen,
with certain terrorist organizations. At
he end of it all, the attacks carried out
at the Charlie Hebdo headquarters
were in the name of 'avenging the
Prophet' from a magazine that is ironically known for its satirical remarks
across the spectrum of religions. It isn't
hard to connect this to the embedded
thoughts in radical minds that nonbelievers are not worthy of the simple
right to life.
So, is it really a sense of sympathy that
has forced even the French citizens to
condemn the magazine, or is it the cemented fear in the minds of millions
which is the governing force behind
their actions?
The poem First They Carne, by Pastor
Martin Nicmollcr finds its meaning
taken upon almost literally in this scenario.
They came for the Communists
And T did not speak out
As l was not a Communist.
They came for the Socialists
And l did not speak out
As Twas not a Socialist.
They came for the Jews
And l did not speak out
As l was not a Jew.
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.
With that thought, we need to understand and accept the sheer importance
of religious thought in today's Godfearing society and then pursue our actions with their implications in mind.

few hours of the day she is allowed to
spend with the Internet. Now time
decides to fly by and before she knows
it, she has to sleep. Pushing through ,
weary eyes, she goes through a video
or two until finally, accepting defeat,
she slowly allows sleep to take her.
Just before welcoming sweet oblivion,
she starts to mentally prepare herself
for the monotony of tomorrow.

Oh, we were such fools.

The story was steered,
Out of our hands and away from the
rules.

What role docs a mathematician sitting
in a room solving crossword puzzles
have in the greatest ever conflict
throughout the history of mankind. A
quote from 'The Imitation Game' quite
simply answers this, "Sometimes it is
the people that no one imagines
anything of, who do the things that no
one can imagine".
The movie throws light on the covert
life of mathematician Alan Turing,
considered as the father of computer
science. The focal point of the movie is
Turing's stint at the Bletchley Park, the
centre for British Intelligence, during
the Second World War and their
attempts at cracking the famous (or
infamous) Nazi code, The Enigma.
With flashbacks into Turing's school
life at Cambridge and instances into
Turing's life after the war, the story
maintains a rich balance, carefully
unfolding one chapter after another of
Turing's life.
Director Morten Tyldum diplays a
phenomenal historical drama with an
outstanding clarity of vision, backed
up by powerful screenplay and a stet lar
performance
by
Benedict
Cumberbatch.
Cumberbatch,
well
known for his portrayal of Sherlock
Holmes in the hit TV series, has
outdone himself. The actor doesn't
play Turing so much as inhabit him,
bravely and sympathetically
but
without mediation; that's your job.
The Imitation Game definitely tops the
chart of biopics this year, easily pulling
down The Theory of Everything
(melodrama overload) and Foxcatcher
(too good to be true). No doubt the
movie got a staggering 8 Oscar
nominations.
