DINNER IN VENICE CITY Friday 8th May 2015 CA’ ZENOBIO DEGLI ARMENI Fondamenta del Soccorso, 2596 - 30123 Venice Web: http://en.turismovenezia.it/Venezia/Ca-Zenobio-degli-Armeni-6258.html Transport to venue: private boat Route: https://goo.gl/maps/FcQOX BRIEF HISTORY – PALAZZO ZENOBIO Near the church of Santa Maria dei Carmini, rises the Baroque Ca’ Zenobio Palace designed by architect Antonio Gaspari, a student and collaborator of Baldassare Longhena, highly regarded for his conservative renovations and interior design. The Palace was erected at the end of the XVII century in 1690, for the Zenobio family who had been wealthy patricians of Greek origin and had settled in Verona. The Zenobios obtained the title of patricians in 1647 from the Venice Senate. Palazzo Zenobio is considered to be one of the most significant examples of Venetian late Baroque design, both architecturally and in interior decor. The magnificent ballroom on the main floor is the main highlight. Blending beautifully with the stucco and colourful painting of the French artist Louis Dorigny, who created a large trompe-l’oeil ceiling fresco. Majestic and complex painting frames, mythological tales, statuary nudes adorned with garlands, rich oriental tromp l’oeil carpets and mocking dwarfs demonstrate the opulent baroque style. Large mirrors magnify space and enhance the enchanting atmosphere. It is said that a young Giambattista Tiepolo has been collaborator of the Chief artist. Throughout the XVIII century the Palace became a venue for intense intellectual life. Many important artists and intellectuals lived and worked in the Palace and the adjacent Biblioteca Zenobiana inaugurated in 1777. The building was designed by Tommaso Temanza to host the family’s archives and the vast library. The building has been utilized as the library of the Moorat- Raphael School - the Armenian School up until 1990. Since 1990, after a complete restoration, it now serves as a research centre for Armenian studies. The Palace was sold to the Mekhtarist Order in 1850 so the Armenian Order has been the title-holder of the building since that period until nowadays.
