Research Activities
I work as the major contributor in the following research projects:

We evaluated query suggestion algorithms by not only the quality of suggested queries, but
also (simulated) users’ judgments and selections on the query suggestions.
We proposed an evaluation metric for query reformulations, which considers not only how
many relevant results are found by the query, but also whether the results are novel in the
current search session.

Utility-based and task-oriented evaluation of scientific literature
We proposed a metric to help scholars identify the useful articles that cannot be found by
scientists in normal conditions.
We built a scientific article search dataset under a specific task setting: the scientists need
to find worth-reading articles, especially those cross-disciplinary ones.

Query reformulation in voice search
We studied typical speech recognition errors in voice search and user responses to these
errors (mainly users’ query reformulation behaviors).

Mapping disciplines using heterogeneous academic information
We studied interdisciplinarity by clustering online academic groups.
We verified the validity of using article usage from social website data for evaluating
academic journals and resources.
We proposed algorithms for clustering academic venues and authors using scientific article
usage information in social websites.

Search systems in search session contexts & TREC session track
We designed algorithms to support users’ adaptive browsing behaviors in a search session.
Our systems were ranked at the first position among over 10 participating research groups
in the TREC 2011 and 2012 session tracks organized by NIST.
