Schedule of the shuttle will be given during registration. AROUND KUALA LUMPUR Public Light Railway Transit (LRT), Monorail, KTM Komuter, Bus To get to the heart of KL from the campus, you will need to get to the Serdang KTM Komuter station. The KTM Komuter runs every 20 minutes from 6.00 am to 11.00 17 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook pm every day. From the Serdang station, you can take the Komuter to get to KL Sentral where then you can change to the other rail lines to reach other parts of KL. To get around KL, the cheapest and safest way is to use the rail system that serves the city. Three lines that you will be using are the Ampang Line, Kelana Jaya Line and the Monorail Line which are integrated. However, there is separate ticketing system for each line, so you have to buy new tickets whenever you want to change lines. We suggest that you buy the Touch N Go card to bypass this need (more on that later). Public buses around KL, although cheap, tend to be quite confusing for first timers. The RapidKL buses serve most train stations to get to other areas unreachable by trains. It is advisable that you plan your journey before you hop on the buses. Go to http://www.myrapid.com.my/home to use the Journey Planner for point-topoint routes and fares and also for the complete rail and bus maps. This is a convenient card that is universally used by Malaysians to pay for public transportations, highway tolls, parking fees and even restaurants. Having this preloaded cash card allows you to bypass the need to buy tickets every time you ride the bus or train. Buy the cards at train stations, petrol kiosks and many convenient stores (watch out for the Touch N Go sign) and reload its cash value at any ATM machines and the aforementioned places whenever the value is running low. For complete lists 18 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook of the places where Touch N Go can be bought and used, and for other information, head to http://www.touchngo.com.my/ Go to www.myrapid.com.my for the transit map. Taxi Using the taxi is perhaps the most convenient way to move around in KL, although admittedly, not the most cost-effective. Taxi fares are based on a metered rate and although it is not prohibitively expensive, heavy traffic might cause the fare to 19 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook skyrocket. Although taxi drivers are by law required to use the meter, some might attempt to charge you a higher flat rate. So insist on using the meter when you get into the taxi. Extra charges apply for rides after midnight and booking by the phone. LIVING IN MALAYSIA ABOUT KL Located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, Malaysia’s capital city is the definition of cosmopolitan. KL’s architecture is a montage of century-old brick buildings, Moorish mosques, Hindu and Chinese temples and a rising skyline that is a triumph of modern engineering. Among the signature elements of KL’s tremendous surge of development are the Petronas Towers – the world’s tallest twin buildings. Kuala Lumpur’s religious mix is richly varied, with Muslim, Tao Buddhist and Hindu communities often living and practicing side by side. Cultural influences are equally diverse, reflecting Kuala Lumpur’s history as a point of exchange between indigenous Malays and traders from the Middle East, China, India and Portugal. In recent years, Kuala Lumpur has emerged as a destination city for travelers to the Pacific Rim. Its mélange of ethnic restaurants, assortment of modern hotels and luxury condominiums, and landscaped parks and gardens cater to a jet setting business class. The city’s remarkable expansion has also been accompanied by a population explosion of nearing 50%, to 1.5 million. A culturally rich urban center with a bustling downtown and contemporary urban skyline, Kuala Lumpur is a living microcosm of the triumphs and some challenges 20 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook facing the world’s great cities. This exciting proximity of Kuala Lumpur makes Perdana University a unique learning and living environment for those students and medical professionals energized by the opportunity to practice medicine in a dynamic urban environment. WEATHER/CLIMATE Having a tropical climate, the weather in Malaysia is described as hot and humid. It gets quite warm during the day, with temperatures in the early 30°C, and it gets cooler at night, typically around 26°C. It is advisable to bring lightweight cotton clothing to weather the climate. No thick or winter clothing is needed. The monsoon season normally affects the west coast (where KL and Serdang are) from November till March. So expect heavy rainfall during this period. However rain does consistently fall throughout the year. And when it rains, it pours. PHONE/INTERNET Being far away from home can be quite overwhelming and getting in touch with friends and family back home can help alleviate feelings of homesickness and alienation. On campus, computer points and wireless connections are available to be used to connect with people from home using many calling and chatting software (e.g. Skype, Windows Messenger etc.). This is probably the most cost-effective way to call home. Computer-to-computer calls and video conferences are invariably free, 21 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook and computer-to-phone calls are relatively very much cheaper than the conventional phone-to-phone calls. Having a mobile phone for many, and we’re sure for you, is an absolute necessity nowadays. Thus, to avoid paying the exorbitant roaming rates charged by your mobile company from home, it is advisable that you get a prepaid SIM card once you arrive. This enables you to get in touch with people back home immediately (each international SMS typically costs RM 0.20) and to call locally. These major mobile operators are most popular among Malaysians: Hotlink by Maxis http://www.hotlink.com.my/ Xpax by Celcom http://www.xpax.com.my/ DiGi Prepaid by DiGi http://www.digi.com.my/ FOOD/DINING Malaysia is a food paradise. Having an infusion of three cultural heritages, the food choices in Malaysia can excite even the most jaded palate. The exotic traditional Malaysian cuisines might not become staple foods for you, nor might they agree with your taste buds, but below are few local delicacies that you must try, if not just for the sheer gastronomical experience of it: Nasi lemak – Literally translates to ‘fat rice’, this dish contains steamed white rice cooked in coconut milk to give it a creamy texture, aromatic scent and that extra weight to the rice. The rice is typically served with a hot spicy sauce (called ‘sambal’), hard-boiled eggs, cucumber slices, and fried small anchovies. Nasi 22 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook lemak is normally eaten for breakfast (yes, we have rice for breakfast), but Malaysians eat it at other times too. Roti canai – Another local go-to food, this cheap dish is a type of flatbread cooked on an iron skillet with a lot of oil. Soft and fluffy on the inside and flaky and crispy on the outside, roti canai is typically eaten with hot curry or ‘dhal’, a milder Indian lentil curry. You can find this dish at the ‘Mamak’ (Indian-Muslim) restaurants which are ubiquitous in Malaysia. Teh tarik – This is a strong, sweet and milky tea that is ‘pulled’ from one mug to another (hence its literal translation which is ‘pulled tea’) to create a frothy texture and to increase its aroma. Served piping hot, it is made from black tea and condensed milk, and can be found in any Malaysian restaurants and stalls. If you are craving for some familiar fast food, head to Alamanda Putrajaya where there are McDonald’s, Burger King, A&W, KFC, Starbucks, Nando’s and a lot of other international chain restaurants. SHOPPING Alamanda Located in Putrajaya, this spacious shopping mall is only 10 minutes away from the campus by car. It houses the supermarkets Carrefour and Cold Storage, GSC Cinemas, a huge food court and many restaurants, bookstores and over 180 retail outlets. It also has a bowling center and karaoke for your entertainment needs. 23 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook Mid Valley Megamall If you are using the KTM Komuter, Mid Valley Megamall is perhaps the most accessible to you. Just four stations away from the Serdang station, the Komuter train stops right in front of the mall. This humongous mall and the adjoining The Gardens mall contain over 500 retail stores, a state-of-the-art bowling center, 18 screen cinema, one-stop IT center, and mega bookstores. You will also find all kinds of delicacies to satisfy every palate from the two mega food courts and the countless restaurants littered around the mall. Suria KLCC Located at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers, the most distinctive landmark of the country, this shopping mall houses mostly luxury shops and high end retail stores, a cinema, two food courts, and many restaurants, some overlooking the beautifully landscaped KLCC Park. This shopping mall has become a must-see for every visitor to KL, if not for the shopping experience, for the amazing scenic background of the twin tower and the park for fantastic photography opportunities. It is easily accessible via the Kelana Jaya line; change from the Komuter at KL Sentral and get off at the underground KLCC station. Low Yat Plaza For all your computing and electronics needs, head to this local favorite mall for everything IT. They sell computers, laptops, peripherals, software, mobile phones, gadgets and other kinds of electronic items imaginable at very cheap prices (the 24 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook difference between the prices here and high street prices can be quite staggering). To get to Low Yat, take the Monorail (from KL Sentral, if you are changing from Komuter) and get off at Imbi station. There are three main races, namely Malay, Chinese and Indian. There are also other ethnic tribes of the indigenous people in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak). Although the official religion of the country is Islam, everyone is free to practice their own religious beliefs. There are places of worship everywhere: mosques, churches, and temples that anyone can frequent. You are expected to adhere to the rules when entering these places, such as removing your shoes and donning the appropriate attire. Malaysians are generally friendly people. If you are in doubt or have any questions about directions, just stop and ask anyone on the street and more often than not they will try to help you. ENTERTAINMENT & SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Cinemas 26 PERDANA UNIVERSITY | International Students’ Handbook Cinemas can be typically found in shopping malls, the closest one to campus being GSC at Alamanda Putrajaya. Two major cinema chains operate throughout major shopping malls, and their locations, schedules and tickets can be found online: GSC Cinemas www.gsc.com.my TGV Cinemas www.tgv.com.my Supermarkets For your household needs, the nearest supermarkets to campus are Cold Storage and Carrefour at Alamanda Putrajaya. There are also convenient stores at Sri Serdang. RULES AND REGULATIONS Perdana University has a No Smoking Policy and students are not permitted to smoke on campus.
