This year’s Gallery Route One’s Artists in the Schools Program is spearheaded by the exuberant Madeline Nieto Hope, who asked the students to fully explore these two questions: “How do trees contribute to a healthy environment?” and “What do trees and people have in common?” To a n s w e r t h o s e questions, the students from the Shoreline Unified School District, the Tomales Ba y Yo u t h C e n t e r a n d the Dance Palace’s AfterSchool Art Program went on a quest to thoroughly explore the environment of the trees that live in the Tomales Bay Watershed, as well as studying the health habits of people. Afterwards, the students compared the similarities between the two. “TREE PEOPLE” is the culmination of the students’ research, expressed in various forms of artwork and by writing stories or poems. By understanding one tiny strand of the tree’s eco-system, the students can better understand themselves.
