Page 2 Chit Chat Chaplain’s Corner Merlin Hedrick In China during the fifties there was a devastating earthquake which shook a huge boulder loose from a mountainside. When curious locals climbed up to look in the cavern that was exposed they discovered a fantastic collection of treasure and artifacts over a thousand years old. The earthquake had opened up a whole new world. In Matthew’s Gospel we see the resurrection of Jesus depicted in the same way. The women came on Sunday morning with their spices to honor their dead master. It seemed like death and evil had won. They had no idea how to move the massive stone that separated them from Jesus. But God had the final word. He sent an angel and an earthquake to open the tomb showing that the cold, hard stone of death was cast aside forever. That empty tomb opened up a whole new world that would shake the old world to its very foundations. As we celebrate Easter and the new life Christ offers let us ask Him to shake loose the attitudes, thoughts and actions that belong to the old world so He can reveal the treasures of the new one He has opened up for us. Amos is a spry 95-year-old living in Ridgeview; he was married and has 2 children. A long time resident of the Peter Becker Community, Amos remembers watching part of the main campus being built. After Maplewood was built he remembers cataloging the books in the library. Born and raised in New Holland, PA, Amos attended Franklin & Marshall College and seminary. Serving as a chaplain in the Navy in the South Pacific Amos remembers visiting the wounded in the hospitals, later becoming the pastor for the United Church of Christ and also the Old Goshenhoppen Church. “I always enjoyed my work,” he says. As a young man he enjoyed fishing and playing the piano. In later years he has enjoyed reading and exercise. The only pet Amos remembers having was “a cat who had gotten shot and lived a long life with a hole in its neck.” Upon receiving a compliment for the nice watch he was wearing he replied, “Well thank you! I think I got that in the 5 & 10!” Whack and Roll Croquet Tournament May 29th & 30th RSVP to Jane Evans at ext 4043 by April 17.
