Thursday 26th March 2015 The guiding principle for Port Fairy Consolidated School is to provide a high quality education for all students and an opportunity for all students to grow to their full potential – creatively, socially, physically and intellectually. Our children are our future and we are honoured to be a partner in a child’s journey through life. Please find attached our menu for term two. Café for the whole term can be ordered in advance, for either just one or both days, or we can also accept orders on a daily basis providing they come in before 9am. The chooks need their water and food replenished and for you to collect their eggs. We need help from Sunday the 5th to the 12th April. A SAFE SCHOOL - I HAVE A RIGHT TO A SAFE SCHOOL AND A RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP KEEP IT SAFE PRINCIPAL’S COLUMNFAREWELL Sadly Daneel Robinson will be leaving our staff at the end of term. Daneel has gained full term employment teaching at TAFE. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Daneel for her wonderful work at our school. Daneel is driven by a desire to improve the outcomes for all students and we have been privileged to have her as part of the Port Fairy Consolidated team over recent years. All the best Daneel with your new career path! KEEPING PLACE You may have noticed some changes taking place with the internal space outside the art studio. This corridor, which is home to our ‘World War 1 Honour Board’ is being re-designed as a ‘Keeping Place’ to house the school’s significant historical items. The ‘Keeping Place’ will be officially opened on Friday, April 24 (ANZAC Day eve) as part of a commemorative day to recognise the one hundred years anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. Thank you to Jenny McCarthy and Maree Stewart for their work with this project. HARMONY DAY Last Saturday was ‘National Harmony Day’ and to mark the occasion all students and staff joined hands on the lower oval to symbolise the importance of looking after each other and being in harmony. Hopefully many students followed up with positive actions over the weekend to bring harmony to their families. POP UP RESTUAURANT Tuesday and Wednesday evenings saw our science room turned into a first class restaurant. All of the students in Years five and six sustained a huge effort to prepare a five star meal for all of their parents. This year the theme of the meal was ‘Turkish Food’ to mark the one hundred years anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. Many thanks to the students, the parents and the staff (especially Kirsty Marwood for her co-ordination), for ensuring the success of this prestigious annual event! KOORIE CULTURE DAY On Wednesday I attended a ‘Koorie Culture Day’ at Warrnambool West Primary School with some of our indigenous students. This day provided a great opportunity for Koorie students in our network to catch up and spend some significant time together. Thank you to Steve Young our Koorie Engagement Support Officer for organising this event. AIR CONDITIONERS As previously stated our eight new air conditioners have now been installed and are ready to go. A big thank you to Sean Spence for donating his time to complete the electrical work and to our Folk Festival Fundraising for supporting this project! PAPER PLANES MOVIE Tomorrow, Friday, March 27, all of our students will be attending a movie at the Port Fairy Cinema. The movie is called ‘Paper Planes’. We ask all students to pay $2, with all proceeds going to Belfast Aquatics. A very worthy community facility! FOOTY COLOURS DAY Please remember that tomorrow is a ‘Wear Your Footy Colours (or soccer, or rugby, etc) Day. Thank you to our junior fundraising team, headed by Xavier Cassidy for organising this event. Gold coin donations will be gratefully accepted and given to a local charity. FAMILY NUMERACY PROBLEM Don’t forget to ‘have a go’ at our weekly ‘Numeracy Problem’ in today’s newsletter. Thanks to Mr Twycross for organising this. BUS TRAVELLER AWARD This year we are recognising our best bus travellers with a weekly award. This award will be nominated by Mr Matt Hoey and it will be given to those students who contribute to the safety, comfort and well-being of their fellow passengers. Congratulations to Daniel Pogson who received this award at last Monday’s assembly. Well done Daniel! HEALTHY LUNCH AWARD Each week we recognise a student with good food for lunch that is packed in a way that reduces our rubbish. Each of these students receives a free lunch from our school café as a prize. The winner for this week, as announced at Monday’s assembly was Tenae Mounsey. Congratulations Tenae! END OF TERM As tomorrow is the last day of term one I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of our school community for ensuring a positive start to the school year. We are very privileged at Port Fairy Consolidated School with an outstanding school community that continues to step up and support each other. Have a great vacation period and we look forward to seeing everybody on Monday, April 13. Please note school will be dismissed tomorrow at 2:30pm. PLEASE REMEMBER ‘We aim for every child to be the best that they can be – without exception!’ ‘MY DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN’ Regards, Mark Fresh Fruit Friday No fruit this week due to “Paper Planes” outing. In Maths we have been continuing to practice our counting and making numbers on ten frames. We are excited about seeing the Paper Planes movie on Friday. All the students have had a fantastic first term and we are looking forward to all that term 2 holds! 1/2’s - Well done everyone on a fantastic first term! The term has been very busy and all students have settled into school and homework routines with persistence and positive work habits. All the children enjoyed their visit to the Port Fairy War Memorial and were very respectful and interested in learning about Port Fairy’s war history. No Spelling Stars testing tomorrow due to our movie. 3/4’s – In Writing we have examined how and when to use a paragraph properly. We are trying to refine and improve our orientation before tackling the events. In Reading we are focusing on the comprehension strategy of ‘re-tell the story’. The Generals have commanded us to try and remember the main points at the beginning, middle and end of a text. In Maths, subtraction has entered the battlefield and has teamed up with addition. We have identified them as having direct relations with one another, therefore we must now utilise some known strategies to assist us with problems involving numbers/ collections/quantities that decrease in size. Over and out. 4/5M – What a busy week again. The grade 4s had a great day out in Warrnambool watching ’26 Story Treehouse’ and playing at Lake Pertobe. We had school photos and we are looking forward to seeing Paper Planes. We have also fitted in some dinners for the grade 5s. We are finishing off our narratives which we have made into picture story books. We looked for word endings (suffixes) in our reading and realise that this can help us with spelling and understanding words. In Maths we played Total Recall and worked with BODMAS to solve equations. We will be sad to see George go at the end of this week and wish him well back at his old school. We hope to see him again in school holidays. We also wish our Somers Camp travellers all the best early next term. Mrs McLaren will be away first week of next term and Mrs Green will be taking our class. 5/6’s - What an amazing job our 5/6s did to produce two outstanding ‘Pop-up Dinners.’ The effort and enthusiasm shown by all the students made all the work worthwhile. The actual dinners were a culmination of all the work the students completed in the and out of the classroom over the last two weeks. We hope all the families and friends of our 5/6 students enjoyed the experience. From all the 5/6 students, we hope everyone has a safe and restful holiday. Physical Education A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped make our Moyne Athletics carnival run so smoothly and successfully. An extra special thank you to Jill Gibson for overseeing and running the cafe for the day. Our students showed great sportsmanship and tried their personal best in all events. Well Done!
