Spring Spotlight on Barbara Civitella

th
With 16 school days remaining, rising 8 grader Barbara Civitella has her
summer planned and it includes a lot of field hockey. “I just did the spring
training with my club (Main Line Mayhem) and I’ll be doing the Vipers
outdoor league, stick work clinics, and defenders and indoor clinics. I’ll
also be trying out for the outdoor and indoor teams.”
Civitella, just in her third year playing the sport, has already developed a
passion and dedication to the game. “I like that it’s a lot of running. You
need a lot of technique and it’s something I can always work on. I can
always just do it in my room – work on my stick work. I also really like
that it’s a team sport. It’s just a lot of fun.”
Civitella plans to keep the fun – and the training – rolling throughout the
summer, despite being at the shore. “I’m going to come back a lot for
hockey; there are a lot of things I want to do…that I don’t want to miss.”
As for her goals: “I do know that I want to play in high school and I definitely want to play in college. For my team (this fall), I want to
go undefeated and make sure that we’re doing well and progressing throughout the season.”
I caught up with Civitella to find out more about her hockey and summer plans:
Developing any particular skills? I’m working on my chip hit, which I just learned, and I’ve been working in clinics and individual lessons
on my hitting -- something you really need in the game.”
Your friends would describe your FH play as: “I don’t know. I think, like, energetic and I’m always into it. I like to be supportive of my
friends. It’s a team sport and I like everyone to know that they’re doing their best. I guess they would say I’m a team player, and not
just there for myself.”
If you’re not playing FH, you are: “I do a lot of acting over the
summer. “It’s a show at the shore (Avalon Players). We rehearse in
June and July and the shows are in early August. This year it’s The
Little Mermaid. I think it will be my fourth year.”
Top thing on your summer to-do list: “To spend more time with my
friends and I want to stay active because sometimes it’s not as
active in the summer. I want to keep running with my friends to
keep me fit, even though it’s not the in-season now.”
Catching up on favorite shows on Netflix? “Yea, I watch Gray’s
Anatomy with my sister. I like it because I’m into Biology and I like
learning about the body and all.”
Favorite places at the shore: “The beach and recreation center around my house. I go there a lot and (I like) Springers (ice cream). My
grandparents are part of the yacht club and sometimes we go there for wings. I love wings!”
Ipod top songs: “I have an ipod that I sometime use when I’m in my room working out with my stick. I like a lot of different kinds of
music. I like country and it may switch to show tunes and then to modern music.”
Best of luck to Barbara and her teammates in preparation for the fall 2015 season! We’ll be watching…
