Volume 1 (Biology) A Note on the Philippine Journal of Science Articles in Biology By Dolores A. Ramirez, PhD The biological sciences are very well represented in the papers published in the Philippine Journal of Science from its first publication in 1906 to its centennial year in 2006. The most outstanding, however, are the papers on the surveys and systematics of the Philippine flora and fauna. From 1906 to 2006, more the 1300 papers on the systematics of Philippine plants, animals (especially insects, birds and fishes) and microorganisms were published. A large number of the species described were newly identified, some of which were established to be indigenous to the Philippines. These publications stand as one testimony to the wide diversity of the Philippine flora and fauna. Selected for reprinting in this special centennial issue of PJS are only a few examples of the scope of biology that are undertaken in the Philippines ranging from physiology, morphology and anatomy, and ecology.
