Over 1K Pinoys in Victoria keep nationality of birth

An overwhelming number of 1,152 Filipinos in
Victoria participated in the
recently-concluded 2015
Mobile Consular Mission
conducted by the Philippine
Embassy-Canberra from 19
to 22 March at the St. Francis Parish Monastery Hall in
Melbourne CBD.
The Mobile Consular Mission primarily provided the
Philippine ePassport processing services including
renewal and new applications as well as to undertake
the formal oath-taking ceremonies for dual citizenship.
Out of the 1,015 regis-
trants this year for ePassport
services, 971 attended their
schedules and had their
passports processed over the
four-day Mobile Mission.
Based on the Philippine Embassy records, the number
of passports processed this
year was 34% more than that
of last year’s total number
of 724 Filipino passports in
Victoria. This prompted the
Consular team to operate a
12-hour service in order to
accommodate all applicants
who pre-registered since
January.

Last week, I had the honour of meeting the Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Belen
Anota. The Ambassador had
kindly flown in from Canberra for just one evening to
present a lecture at the University of Melbourne, as part
of the Master of International
Relations course.
While the Ambassador
talked about the purpose of
embassies and consulates,
something with which I have
become increasingly familiar
during my internship at the
Melbourne office of the Philippine Consulate of Victoria,
Her Excellency also spoke
passionately about the hotly
contested area referred to
interchangeably as the West
Philippine Sea or the South
China Sea.
This dispute, which has
endured for more than a
century (the British first
made a legal claim on the
Spratly Islands in 1877), involves the People’s Republic
of China, Malaysia, Taiwan,
Vietnam, Brunei and, most
importantly to the Ambassador, the Philippines.
Each country involved
has made maritime entitlement or territorial claims of
the sea; however, China is
perhaps the most assertive
player in this dispute, claiming the largest border.
China argues that it has
sovereignty over a large portion of the South China Sea
and various islands based
on territorial lines depicted
in ‘historical maps’. Yet,
many international lawyers
disagree with this reasoning,
asserting that it has no legal
basis.
The South China Sea is
crucial for many reasons,
including potential oil and
natural gas deposits, but the
main strategic gains to be
made are increased control
over the extremely busy sea
lanes and access to an area
abundant with fish and other
marine resources. In fact, the
South China Sea provides
a whopping 10 per cent of
the world’s fish catch. This
makes the disputed region
extremely valuable.
The most recent development in the South China Sea
dispute came in December
last year, when China ignored the deadline in an
arbitration claim submitted by the Philippines to
the International Court of
Justice in The Hague (the
Netherlands). China allowed
the deadline to pass as it
held that disputes should be
discussed directly with the
countries involved, without
third-party involvement.
One of the most interesting facts we learned from the
Ambassador is that, contrary
to popular belief, the claim
made by the Philippines is
not a territorial claim but
one of maritime entitlement.
The Philippines is simply
looking to protect its exclusive economic zone, or EEZ,
which allows the country to
have special access to marine resources in the area.
While the Philippines can
assert that China is violating
the United Nations Convention on the Law of the
Sea (UNCLOS), realistically
there are very few enforcement mechanisms. International lawyers are hesitant to
admit that international law
is a rather impotent beast.
So, the question remains:
what can the Philippines
do to enforce its EEZ in the
South China Sea? Despite the
increasing rate of the Philippines’ economic growth, and
its resurgence as a regional
power, China is admittedly
much more dominant.
As a point of comparison,
the military of the Philippines has a 2015 budget of
US$3.2 billion, compared to
China’s enormous US $141
billion military budget. Unsurprisingly, given their burgeoning population, China
also has about 18 times as
many active military personnel as the Philippines. In
short, the Philippines cannot strongarm China over
this issue.
Direct talks between the
Philippines and China are a
possibility, but it’s doubtful
that these will result in a
meaningful solution. It appears that the only viable
option left to the Philippines
is to continue its so-called
‘lawfare’ tactics, while encouraging other countries
– such as Australia and the
United States – to pressure
China.
Until an international
consensus emerges over the
dispute, the South China
Sea will continue to sour
relations between the Philippines and China for years
to come.

The joke is on you
Last 1 April 2015, news circulated about
Qantas finally adding a letter “u” after Q,
giving in to a long-standing criticism that
its name is the only one spelled with “q”
without its often “u” appendage. So Qantas
officially became “Quantas”. This is a very
mild form of April Fools prank or joke—
harmless and truth to tell, will not tarnish
the name of a company.
Every first of April, the world celebrates
April Fools’ Day. We are cautioned not to
believe everything that we read or hear
about. Chances are, news circulating on
that day could be a prank, a practical joke,
or a satire. Even among friends, it wouldn’t
be uncommon reading Facebook posts announcing one’s engagement, getting hitched,
or getting pregnant.
The history of April Fools has several
inconsistencies, but is often attributed to
a change of calendar from Julian to Gregorian, making the start of the year 1 January,
instead of the usual 1 April. For the traditionalists who still commenced each year in
April, they were given “fools errands”, thus
beginning a tradition of celebrating April
Fools which spread throughout Europe.
But we don’t only get pranks or practical
jokes on that day, any other day could just
be a red-letter day for delivering it—some
for simply humour’s sake, while others to
really hurt someone. A satire is a form of
humour highlighting one’s weakness, vices
among other things to ridicule and shame
individuals in the hope of improvement of
reform. Because of the power brought about
by social media, satire does not only affect
the person or institution maligned, but also
pranks those who are recipients of this satire.
In an article by Rappler, author Margeurite de Leon asks why we Filipinos could
not distinguish the truth from satire? She
bemoaned the fact that Filipinos easily fall

prey to satire, believing and sharing over
Facebook such stories as Senator Jinggoy Estrada, currently implicated in the pork barrel
scam, as having been caught by immigration
officials as smuggling money on his chest.
The story had ridiculously but beautifully
woven prose in which the accused Senator
allegedly introduced himself as the sexy
Senator and the alleged bump on his chest
was the result of workout. Ridiculous but
some fell for it that they called Rappler to
verify the item. Others simply shared it like
it was Bible truth.
De Leon opined that this inability to discern the truth from satire stems from the
Filipinos’ lack of critical thinking, and our
education is part to blame for it. She cited
reports of the deteriorating state of education in the Philippines and recommended
improvements in the educational system and
the people running it.
Aside from critical thinking, maybe what
our educational system as well as the entire
society should address is our propensity for
gossip. Gossip, sometimes true, but mostly
unverified and false stories about others,
may seem true when people go about spreading it. Like the Jinggoy story, it may seem
true given the accusations hurled at him, but
without confirming the facts, its spread like
forest fire may not only make it seem true,
but also ultimately malign his reputation.
Gossip doesn’t manifest one’s knowledge of
facts and happenings of things around, but
it shows being irresponsible in spreading
stories that are unconfirmed truths.
April Fools is a day where anyone seems
to be given a license to make a fool of other
people. If we are not discerning, and hold
something unreal as real, fiction as true
story, we are pranked. And if we spread
these words around, we not only add insult
to injury. We show our true colours as careless and negligent communicators. Nothing’s
really funny when the joke is on us.

conducted its 2015 ePassport
Biometrics mobile service and
oath-taking for Dual Citizenship
at St. Francis Pastoral Centre
in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
from Thursday 19 March to
Sunday 22 March.
The team led by Minister
and Consul General Ms Nina P.
Cainglet included Mr Ronaldo
B. Pilapil, Property Officer and
Attaché, and Ms Kathleen F.
Tudio, Consular Assistant and
Attaché.
Also in attendance was Atty.
Rodolfo Sabulao, Labor Attaché,
who provided a consultation
service to Overseas Filipino
Workers on labour-related issues and issuance of Overseas
Employment Certificates (OEC),
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration membership and
verification of employment
contracts.
The Embassy team was ably
assisted by six volunteers from
the office of the Philippine
Consulate of Victoria (Di Jamieson, Nini Jover, Virginia Del
Rosario, Ric Vedar and Francesca Hambly, an intern from
the University of Melbourne).
Three additional volunteers
from the Melbourne Filipino
Community (David Del Rosario,
Raine Cabral and Karl Cabral)
also assisted in easing the load.
An unprecedented number
of Filipino nationals (approximately 1,200) attended over the
four days, many to have their ePassport applications processed
and over 180 people took their
oaths of allegiance to re-acquire
Filipino citizenship. Although
predominantly for Filipinos in
Victoria, the Mission team also
accommodated an additional six
registrants from South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania.
The large number of registrants meant that the mobile
service had to operate from 7am
to 7pm for three days and until
4pm on the Sunday. The process
was slowed down greatly on
Sunday when one of the two
laptops used for processing
ePassports decided to call it
quits. The team quickly imple-
mented an alternative plan
re-scheduling appointments to
accommodate all registrants.
The Philippine Consulate
wishes to express its sincere
appreciation and deepest gratitude for the patience and understanding of our kababayans and
their families who attended the
mobile service. From all of our
volunteers - “Thank you”.
Those who pre-registered and
attended the mobile service in
Melbourne saved themselves a
trip to the Embassy in Canberra
or to the Consulate General in
Sydney – the only two places
in Australia, apart from mobile
missions, where Philippine ePassports can be processed.
The jump in numbers of registrants who took the oath to
re-acquire their Filipino citizenship was also very encouraging
and is a good sign that many Filipinos are realising the unique
benefits of dual citizenship as
Filipino-Australians.

Train rides
He called out of the blue.
I haven’t heard from him in
weeks.
“How are you?”
“Fine. You?”
“ Ye a h , f i n e . ” A
pause. “Wanna do coffee?”
So I find myself one Saturday afternoon, on a citybound train, on my way
to meet with Adam, an exboyfriend I broke up with
years before.
He was my first. A relationship full of excitement
and romance. One filled
with whispers of sweet nothings and time spent together
as much as possible. For a
while, there was no one else
in our world but each other.
Then one day, things began to change. First, just
little misunderstandings
from trivial things that were
quickly brushed off as soon
as they flared up. Then more
cracks began to appear that
couldn’t be ignored. Until
eventually, arguments almost every day. He couldn’t
trust my heart. I ended up
breaking his.
The carriage rattles along
the tracks, chugging on its
sun-drenched lines. Bright
sunlight streams through the
windows, making the passengers squint from the rays.
I am sitting in a corner, book
in my lap. Absent-mindedly
I try to soak the words in but
they refuse to make sense.
My mind too pre-occupied
with those last few weeks
before Adam and I parted;
the possible reasons why
our relationship ended the
way it did.
I w o n d e r w h y Ad a m
would think I’d cheat on
him. Did someone say something to mislead him? Did I
act in a way that would give
him just cause? Did he simply not trust me? I couldn’t
ask him over the phone.
I didn’t want to bring up
again those feelings of hurt
and anger at being made to
feel guilty; of being cause of
suspicion with every move
and action.
For the record, I was faithful.
The train pulls in to a
stop and I continue to stare
blankly out the window. I see
shapes and shadows move
but pay no notice. I close
my eyes momentarily, trying
to suppress the long-buried
feelings that were again
surfacing.
“Hey!”
I don’t look up.
“Hey,” the voice repeated,
“are you okay?”
I turn and see Adam walking towards me. We’d caught
the same train. I’m surprised.
He sits opposite and looks
at me. He notices the book
on my lap.
“Any good?”
“It’s ok.”
“You should read this one
by – ”
“Why did you want to meet
today?” I interrupt him midsentence.
He looks at me with measure, “I thought we could
talk. I thought we could get
back together.”
“Get back together?” I was
both angry and confused.
“After what had happened?
Don’t you remember the
arguments, the silent treatments? You accused me of
cheating! And you want to
know the worst thing? You
refused to give me any reason
why you did.”
No reply.
“I was really hurt by your
accusations. I thought we
were doing well. It’s not my
fault if you couldn’t handle
the fact that I have close
male friends. I’ve never slept
with any of them. If you
only knew what I had been
through, you’d know that I
would never cheat on you.
But you didn’t even give me
the chance to explain.”
He looks down, still not
saying anything. Right then,
I didn’t want to be near him.
I wanted to get up and walk
out before the train doors
closed…
“Hey!”
I stir.
“Hey,” the voice repeated,
“are you okay?”
I look up, bleary eyed. My
friend Steve is in the same
carriage. He sits down opposite me.
“Sorry to wake you. Didn’t
realise you were sleeping.”
“It’s ok,” I mumble.

volunteerism and social entrepreneurship in its lunch
buffet on 31 May, from 12nn
to 5pm, at the St Paul’s Community Centre, 202 Glengala
Road, West Sunshine.

will keynote the event with
a talk about social entrepreneurship as a model for
poverty alleviation. French
volunteer and GK social entrepreneur Fabien Courteille
will introduce the “Plush
and Play” stuffed toys collection. An Australian social
enterprise helping GK communities called GKRAFT
will also be launched during
the same event.

book titled Genius of the

I needed to attend a seminar at a location unfamiliar
to me. I boarded the train
and I was constantly on
the lookout for sign-posts
that confirmed my journey.
Then the pre-recorded voice
inside the train started to
announce the stops erroneously. The driver did not
show any effort to correct
it. In a moment of panic, I
got confused and queried
myself if I was on the right
train. A few times I was
tempted to get off, looking
helplessly out the window.
If I listened to the voice in
that moment of uncertainty,
I would not have made it to
my destination on time.
This incident made me
aware that not all the voices
we hear proclaim the truth.
We need to discern in prayer
and be alert for confirmation. At times I am asked

During Lent, when we are
urged to repent, renew and
repair our relationship with
God, many voices would
beckon us. Our desire for
reconciliation, fasting and
sacrifice would be greatly
challenged in favour of carnal desires and our weaknesses are highlighted more
than ever.
However, if we hold on to
Jesus and persevere in our
resolve to be transformed by
the renewing of our mind,
we may be able to receive
the promise of deeper conversion and salvation.
This Lent, my intention is
not to add any more burden
to others - to allow them the
freedom to be the good person they want to be without
adding further baggage to
their heavily-laden world.
This would take a lot of dying to self – my desires to
control would need to take
a back seat in favour of allowing them to express the
honest part of themselves.
Along with this should
come the humility not to
bear any grudges or hurt,
but develop a greater respect
and understanding of human needs and responses.
I will rely on Jesus on
the Cross to help me. If I
meditate on His great love,
He did not add any yoke to
anyone, instead took all of
our burdens to His death.
However, His resurrection
proclaims there is victory.
Our triumph over our selfish
self is in itself His own. He
knows we have responded
to grace and listened to His
voice.

current situation, they still

the elevator company which
sponsored them delayed
the release of their salaries
for several weeks. The 11
Filipinos, according to the
Electrical Trades Union website, “now have no money,
no job, nowhere to live and
no way to get home.”
Filipino individuals and
groups like Nelia Arino Ciar
and her two sisters, Ivy and
Sonia started a personal
fundraising drive through
Facebook and text messages. Last 5 April 2015, Ciar
handed to the group over
$1675 which they collected
from friends and contacts.
Ciar’s mother also donated
her washing machine. Other
groups have also started collecting money and goods to
donate to the group.
Investigations are now being conducted by the Union
group and the Department
of Immigration. The urgent
needs of the 11 Filipinos are
food, clothing, and money
for their everyday expenses
and bills. They are currently
temporarily housed in a
shared accommodation in
Cranbourne being paid for
by a generous Filipino real
estate agent who refused to
have his name announced
publicly.
Meanwhile, Ciar said
monetary donations are being accepted. She is using her own account to receive donations and names/
amounts donated are posted
on her Facebook page. At
this stage, donors are urged

According to the records
of the Consular Office at
the Philippine Embassy in
Canberra, there was a remarkable increase of 32%
in the number of dual citizenship applicants in 2015
compared to the 2014 dual
citizenship total of 137.
In a radio interview with
92.3 FM 3ZZZ Hoy Pinoy,
Honorary Consul Felix Pintado stated that the number
of Filipino-Australians who
participated in this year’s
Mobile Mission was over-
whelming and encouraging, especially those who
opted for dual citizenship
as Filipino-Australians. He
added that this proved that
more and more Filipinos
are recognising the privileges and advantages of dual
citizenship such as property ownership, business
and trading privileges, suffrage rights, to name a few.
Most importantly, Honorary
Consul Pintado remarked
that being a dual citizen
or Filipino-Australian like
himself, the most significant
driver (of dual citizenship)
is one’s desire to keep that
connection and ties with
one’s Filipino identity and
cultural lineage.
The 2015 Mobile Consular Mission was headed
by Consul General Nina
Cainglet , assisted by Property Officer and Attaché
Ronaldo B. Pilapil and Consular Assistant and Attaché
Kathleen F. Tudio who operated the biometrics passport
mobile services.
This year’s Mobile Mission was also fortunate to
have Philippine Labor Attaché Atty. Rodolfo Sabulao as
part of the team. Atty Sabulao provided open consultation services with Overseas
Filipino Workers in Victoria concerning employment and work migration
issues. He also facilitated
the issuance of labour documentary requirements such
as the Overseas Employment Certificates (OEC) and
Overseas Worker’s Welfare
Administration (OWWA)
membership as well as the
verification of employment
contracts.
The Philippine Consulate
Office in Melbourne hosted
this successful event under
the supervision of Honorary
Consul Felix Pintado and

Filipino BBQ Pop-up at the
Federation Square Vegetable
Patch CBD held on 13 March
would have been the great
Ihaw-Ihaw luncheon experience.
This event, hosted by the
top Filipino chefs and students at the Center for Culinary Arts in Manila, was
one of two Filipino food
events showcased in the
2015 Melbourne Food and
Wine Festival. In this year’s
Melbourne Food and Wine
Festival, which ran from 27
February to 15 March, people from Victoria and beyond
indulged in more than 200
events which merged the
greatness of diverse cuisines,
local and international, in
the city’s finest dining places
and in spectacular regional
Victoria.
It was such an amazing
feeling to see authentic Pinoy cuisine being part of this
annual celebration of the
finest food, wine and dine
experience. And in a popup food event like this, what
greater dish could be better
served than our very own
irresistible barbie treats –
the inihaw na baboy (grilled
pork) and the inasal (grilled
chicken). They may appear
simple but talking about
flavours, no doubt they were
10 out of 10 inihaw treats.
With top Filipino chefs such
as internationally-renowned
Chef Sau del Rosario, The
Traveller Chef Jayps Anglo
and celebrity Chef Marvin
Agustin, leading the Pinoy
food team, nothing but the
best and finest was served.
Pinoy BBQ pop-up diners enjoyed two sumptuous
meal choices. The first one
was the grilled pork belly
(liempo) served with sweet
potato mash and rice. The
other one was chicken inasal
served with corn on the cob
and rice. All I can say is that
both dishes got the YUM factor and the BURP of approval
from the Filipinos, Aussies
and other nationalities who
came.
I had the pork belly and it
was really good. The pork
had amazing flavours, making me wonder about the
marinade used. I particularly like the idea of the sweet
potato (kamote) mash, with
its sweetness blending with
the pork and the rice making
the entire dish a stimulating
food experience. Hay, busog!
And there’s more, the rice!
Wow, the delicious rice!
Actually I called it the star
rice because it was yellow
in colour, which reminded
me of Star margarine which
my mother used to put in
our rice believing that it
would help us grow stronger
and brighter. Well, I guess it
worked!
The chicken inasal, which
my friend Ms. G had, was
equally exciting. It was
served with rice and on the
side, corn on the cob topped
with bagoong (shrimp paste).
Yes, bagoong! Quite a unique
combination but it turned
out to be a good one. In lieu
of butter and salt which we
normally use for corns, the
bagoong brought a different
twist to the dish mixing the
sweetness of the corn with
its flavour and saltiness.
For many, the comment
was “This is what grilled is
all about,” having enjoyed
every bite. Some found
the cost a bit more than the
usual price range for a luncheon barbie, saying that a
bit more generosity on the
serving would have greatly
satisfied their craving and
their money’s worth. And
for others, it was a once-in-
a-blue-moon experience and
they were willing to spend
just to savour authentic Pinoy food.
For me, it was indeed a delightful inihaw encounter. It
feels like home. And I think,
that’s what’s unique in Filipino cuisine. It always takes
us home. It always makes us
feel at home.

The Filipino-Australian community spearheaded the
celebration of two big festivals this month in Ballarat
and Bendigo. The Filipino-Australian Association Ballarat Inc. (FAABI), led by its President Shirley Hart,
co-produced with the City of Ballarat the Harmony Fest
2015 last 22 March at Alfred Deakin Place, Camp Street
in Ballarat. Meanwhile, the Loddon Campapse Multicultural Services led by its Filipino Chair, Dr Voltaire
Nadurata was the over-all organiser of the 2015 Bendigo
Festival of Culture held from 16 to 22 March 2015 at the
Sydney Myer Place in Bendigo.
Harmony Fest in Ballarat
Now on its fifth year, Harmony Fest promotes the
theme ‘all of us’, aimed at
bringing the community
together to celebrate Ballarat’s wonderful diversity. Lia Andanar Yu, a Filipina,
is the event’s Multicultural
Ambassador. Philippine
Honorary Consul to Victoria Felix Pintado also graced
the event.
The Harmony Fest featured a four-hour live concert, international food
stalls, workshops and
demonstrations, children’s
activities, stall markets, a
youth precinct and a multicultural expo. There was
also a Parade of Nations,
featuring performers wearing traditional costumes
representing different
countries like China, Thailand and the Philippines.
The Philippine Jeepney
was also presented to the
community.
A non-profit organisation, FAABI aims to assist
new Filipino migrants, to
promote a spirit of understanding and unity
among Filipinos and to
the Australian community
as a whole. It also aims to
preserve the Filipino culture and tradition through
activities linking together

2015 Bendigo Festival of Culture
Now on its 14th year, the
2015 Bendigo Festival of Culture is a week-long celebration held during the cultural
diversity week. There were
singing, dancing, food stalls,
forums, art sessions, massage stall and exhibitions the
entire week. Two Filipinos,
Cora Fuentes-Mahnic, the
event’s coordinator, and Lilian Nieves-Caligdong also
contributed in organising
the event.
The Filipino community’s
Ati-atihan led by Ed Guevarra of EMG Sports and
Entertainment Network was
one of the crowd favourites.
The loud beating of drums
attracted attention when the
Ati-atihan dancers in their
multi-colored headresses
and garb started doing their
synchronised movements to
the beat of the drums. The
frenzied atmosphere urged
people to take photos and
videos while some gamely
joined the parade as they
moved around the venue.
The dancers are: Obeth

Filipinos come to Australia through Visitor, Work or
Partner visas in the hope of
finding a job, love, or even
a new life. Indeed, many of
our kababayans have found
happiness and success here.
For those who also want to
experience what Australia
has to offer but are not qualified to apply for the said visas, the Business Innovation
and Investment program visa
may be the one for you.
A Business Innovation
and Investment program
visa is for individuals who
own businesses, are venture
capitalist entrepreneurs, or
have considerable or investment background and are
prepared to put money in
prescribed investments in
Australia.
The visa includes three
streams:

Business Innovation
stream is for people
with business skills
who want to put up,
expand and supervise
a new or existing business in Australia
-
Investor stream is for
people who want to invest no less than AUD
1.5 million in an Australian state or territory
and maintain business
and investment activity in Australia; and
-
Significant Investor
stream is for people
who would like to
invest at least AUD 5
million into complying investments in
Australia and want to
maintain business and
investment activity in
Australia.
Applicants to this visa
must undertake a two-stage
processing procedure. First,
they must apply for a temporary visa (subclass 188)
and may apply for permanent residence visa (subclass 888) after establishing business or investment
activity in Australia.
The Business Skills (Provisional) visa subclass 188
— Business Innovation and
Investment (Provisional) is
a temporary visa valid for
four years. The applicant
may be in or outside of
Australia at the time of the
visa grant. The applicant
must get at least 65 points
(the pass mark) in the points
test to be qualified to apply
for this visa in the Business Innovation stream or
the Investor stream. The
applicant should be nominated by a state/territory
agency, receive a written invitation to apply, and apply
within the time stated in the
invitation. The applicant
should lodge the application through the Internet
on SkillSelect and may be
inside or outside Australia.
If the applicant is inside
Australia, he/she must be a
substantive visa or a Bridging visa A, B or C holder.
Secondary applicants who
are provisional subclass
188 visa holders can still
be included in the subclass
188 application with the
permission of primary applicant, even though they
are no longer dependent on
the principal applicant.
On the other hand, the
Business Innovation and
Investment (subclass 888)
visa is a state/territory
nominated visa. It is not
points tested and does require the lodging of an EOI
via SkillSelect. This second
stage of the processing procedure grants the applicant
a permanent residence in
Australia. Applicants may
apply for a permanent residence onshore or offshore
and must have genuine
commitment to sustain
business or investment activities in Australia.

film director in Perth

WA—Perth is privileged to
have Filipino independent
film director Dave Cecilio
who arrived in February.
Dave has since mingled with
the different Filipino communities in Perth and Mandurah. More importantly, he
had conducted workshops
on singing, dancing and acting on film for children and
adults. I joined the Perth
workshop held last 15 and 21
March. Aside from learning
the very helpful and informative tips, every participant
had to do a screen test, where
each one of us had to show
different emotions in front
of a camera. This was a great
challenge but proved to be
fun for everyone. Then, we
were divided into groups and
were asked to create a short
play showing the six basic
emotions. In less than an
hour, we were being filmed
by Direk Dave. On our last day, we were
part of the movie premiere
where Direk Dave’s two independent films were shown.
Just like any big movie premieres, we greeted the audience at the red carpet of the
lobby of the iconic art deco
Astor Theatre, our short films
were shown to everyone on
the big screen and we had the
awarding ceremony on stage. The winners were Best Actress, Kathline Rose Ochea;
Best Actor, Bienvenido Dela
Cerna; Best Supporting Actress, Cielo Franklin and
Thea Rudica; Best Supporting Actor, Arnold and Best
Child Actor Keanu Cajustin.
The two independent
films were “Watawat” and
“Muisko”. “Watawat” stars
Chinchin Gutierez where
she plays Marcela Agoncillo
who, together with her niece
Delfina Herbosa de Natividad
and her daughter Lorenza Agoncillo, made the Philippine
flag that Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo hoisted out of his window in Kawit, Cavite upon
the declaration of Philippine
Independence on 12 June
1898. “Musiko” stars Martin
Escudero as a young lad who
loves his music, that not even
his guardian and grandfather,
played by Tommy Abuel,
could stop him. A second
showing of these two films
will be held on 19 April at
the same venue.
Mr. Cecilio is also scheduled to do another Filmact
workshop in Darwin, NT on
the second week of April. He had workshops in other countries, like Canada,
United Arab Emirates and
USA. He is still making arrangements to go to Sydney
and Melbourne. At the moment, he has two films in the
planning stage. He extends
his gratitude to the Filipino
Australasian Club Inc (FACI)
and Filipino Communities
Council of WA (FCCWA)
for all the help they have
extended in making all these
possible.

all work and study. Amidst
the hectic schedule of working and their IT Information
Technology class for which
they meet once a week at The
Lion’s Den, Tuxen Avenue
Carrum Downs, they made
time to watch live a concert titled "The Abba Experience" at Somerville Hotel.
It was a fun enjoyable night
for the girls. Fe Gillies, President of the group, was with

Dancing was a bit tiring,

Just can’t wait
to be king
A young Filipino talent is
set to conquer the theatre
stage. Adam de Leon, 11
and current Grade 6 student
at Banyule Primary School,
was cast in late 2014 by Disney as the young Simba in
the Lion King, now showing
at the Regent Theatre. Just
like the young Simba, the
budding actor just can’t wait
to be king, but in Adam’s
case, of the stage.
Adam’s father is FilipinoAmerican, while his mother
is Australian. He was born
in San Diego, California and
moved to Australia permanently with his parents, older
brother AJ and younger sister
Annabelle in 2012. Adam
grew up surrounded by his
large Filipino family and has
always embraced the culture,
especially the food.
Adam started theater in
2011 at the age of 7 in multiple youth theatre productions with STAR Repertory
Theater and fell in love with
the stage. After arriving in
Melbourne, he continued to
pursue performing.
He has been involved in

than most 11 year olds with
balancing schooling commitments and the rigorous

the theatre 4-5 days/nights

teacher Mr Furness and Principal Mrs Marmo at Banyule
Primary School and Disney
tutor Priscilla, he continues
to excel at school. The Lion King Melbourne
season opened on 20 February and will close on 23
August.

The first batch of volunteer
immersion trip will happen
in Manila for the communities of Gawad Kalinga and

5-15 July. The second batch
will be the Visayas communities of Bohol and Cebu which
is happening on 20-31.
The volunteers will be
hosted by local families
along with their mates so
volunteers can learn more
about the culture and develop new relationships

Celebrating Mommy Nora’s 86th birthday
Nora Lopez, fondly called
by everyone as Mommy
Nora, celebrated her 86th
birthday last 7 March at St.
Albans UCA Hall. She hails
from Iloilo, Philippines and
at 18, was once a cover girl
of Hiligaynon magazine. A
faithful servant of God and
a mother of one, Mommy
Nora has three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She’s the truest
friend we all can have, a
confidante, a shoulder to cry
on, a loving person, always
there to lend a helping hand. Regardless of her age, she
still does volunteer work at
St. Albans UCA as among
the Golden Ladies Fellowship Group and assists in the
Playgroup as she just loves
the little ones. She brightens
the church with the sound
of her laughter and gives us
warm understanding, infinite patience and a wonderful gentleness too. Despite
the ups and downs of life,
she still loves her life and
celebrating her birthday is
her way of saying thank you
to everyone who has been a
part of her life, one way or

14 March, Albert Sy of SY
Atlas Foundation donated
money to the group.
Having been in property

industry for over 15 Years,
Albert Sy has decided to set

back in October 2014.
He made a promise to Ms
Gigi Kalong, who is part of

Community Medal for Lifetime Community Service
during the annual Premier’s
Harmony Dinner held at the
Rose Hill Gardens Grand
Pavilion last 12 March 2015.

many voluntary community
leadership roles including
being the founding president of the highly acclaimed
Kapit-bahayan Cooperative
Ltd.(KCL), current president
of the Alliance of Philippine
Community Organisations
Inc. (APCO) and founding
chair of the Auburn Small
Community Organisation
Network Inc. (ASCON)
NSW Premier Mike Baird
MP and Minister for Western
Sydney and Minister for

awarded Ruben the very
prestigious medal before
some 1,400 dinner guests
that included other government officials, ministers and
members of the Parliament,

and posthumously.
Ruben has given more
than 20 years of exemplary
voluntary services to the

tenant-managed Kapit-bahayan Coop is the leading
affordable rental housing
coop in NSW. It has five

also helped organise co-ops
among CALD communities.
Kapit-bahayan is the only
co-op in NSW that was able
to use its sweat equity or savings from operations to buy
land and build the Canley

Knox Multicultural Committee during its last meeting before its third year of
celebrating cultural diversity
in Victoria, particularly in
Knox and its surrounding

The committee led by

discussed various items
on the agenda that will be
critical to another successful
event titled “Celebration of
Multiculturalism in Knox”
(powered by the Multicultural Harmony Festival) to
be held on 19 April at the
Hungarian Community Centre in Boronia.
A number of food stalls
will be selling exotic and
unique food items from
their respective ethnic communities which will also
provide traditional musical
and dancing entertainment.
Another stall will be set up
to sell DVDs of the 2014
MHF presentation if you
have missed this event.
Although this year has
been organised to be a smaller celebration than the previous two years attended by
thousands, entry is still free
and loads of entertainment
will be provided to everyone.
This is an open invitation
so come and join the celebration to once again prove
“that we can all live, work
and party together,” says

night concert last 28 March
at the packed Millennium
Reception, The Voice KidsPhilippines grand champion
Lyca Gairanod and runner
up Darren Espanto captured
the hearts of Fil-Aussies in
Melbourne after a fresh, fun
and spectacular live concert
dubbed “Little Voices”.
Those who watched the
show would definitely agree
with me that the voices of
these two young artists were
no little at all. Little people,
yes; Lyca being just 10 years
old and Darren, 13. Amazingly, these two little people
definitely are the whole
package! Voice and musical
talents: top-notch. Stage
presence and entertaining
skills: outstanding. Audience impact, engagement
and connection: natural
and effortless. I think, that
night I became an instant
Lycanatic and Darrenatic,
for sure.
The talents of Lyca and
Darren, two fresh faces in the
Philippine music industry,
cannot be underestimated.
They are born entertainers.
Their innocence, charms
and wit could truly work up
the crowd.
Darren, with his voice
and good looks, mesmerised
the audience as he sang
Domino by Jessie J. Darren
shared that this song was
memorable to him being his
blind audition piece and
entry song to the Voice Kids
competition. The song also
earned him the title “Mr.
Domino.”
Darren also proved that
he’s got the moves as he
grooved to Justin Bieber’s
upbeat hit “Somebody to
Love.” Another Darren shining moment was his performance of his new carrier
single “In Love Ako Sa Iyo”,
composed by Vehnie Saturno under MC Music. It was
delightful to see the natural
charisma of Darren as he
interacted and engaged with
the audience while singing
and posing for photos with
them.
The ultimate highlight of
Darren’s segment and, for
me, his greatest performance
during the night was when
he belted out two classics:
“Ngayon,” popularised by
Basil Valdez and the Karaoke
fave “One Moment in Time”
by Whitney Houston.
The musical spectacle
went on with the Little Star
Lyca Gairanod owning the
stage with her rendition of
Megastar Sharon Cuneta’s
“Pangarap na Bituin.” For
this little diva, stardom is no
more a dream at all. Lyca is
so adorable, spontaneous,
funny and truly entertaining. At 10, her voice is so
powerful; her innocence
captivating. I could see the
entire crowd roaring with
laughter as she performed
on stage, nailed every song
with impromptu comedy
acts as a treat. She is such a
natural artist.
Lyca performed “Halik”
by Aegis, which made Voice
Kids Philippines coach Sarah Geronimo turn around
and secure for her a spot
in her team. She also performed Sarah Geronimo’s
“Ikot Ikot Lang”, complete
with matching dance lessons
and audience participation.
For her final acts, Lyca’s
own rendition of her grand
final songs “Narito Ako” by
Regine Velasquez-Alcasid
and another Aegis song “Basang-Basa sa Ulan” proved
how the Little Diva bagged
the title Voice Kids Grand
Champion.
When Lyca and Darren
rendered their production
duets, all I could say was,
WOW! I do not know how
many times I have heard the
“Frozen” theme song “Let It
Go” in its original version
and different renditions but
the Lyca-Darren version was
superb. I have never had
such fun with “Let It Go”
before their duet. It was
not just their vocal abilities
but also their impromptu
spiels, which actually took
them four or five takes before they could take off and
completely finish the song.
That was so hilarious and
memorable
Lyca and Darren also sang
the Papal Visit theme song
“Tell the World of His Love.”
For me, I felt a little bit more
inspiration and meaning
when they sang it; maybe
because they are kids. It just
gave it more “Oomph” factor,
I guess. And finally, what a
great way to end a fantastic
night with the little stars
singing “Good Time,” which
indeed captured what the
night was all about.
Little Voices Concert also
appealed to me as not just
an entertaining event but
likewise, empowering. The
stars of the entire night were
little people – kids and the
youth. Prior to the main
acts were performances
showcasing Melbourne’s
Filipino-Aussie little stars.
Future rising stars on stage
during the night were Myka
Baculi, Chloe Salvo, Rachel
Brereton, Jehscy Sotelo,
Adam Punsalang, Mary Ann
Vander Host, Alijah Kristine
Adonis and Shanelle Diongson. A special bonus was
a dance number from an
all-male group Kbode, the
2013-2014 Australian Dance
Champion.
The event was hosted by
Charlene Sotelo and Ralph
Parolma and jointly produced by The Face Australia
Promotions and Management and the Megaforce
Production Entertainment.
At the end of the night,
there was only one thing
in my mind: “Oh, what an
amazing gig!” For sure,
next time Lyca and Darren
come to Melbourne, I will
be there.

That thing called “Diskarte”
From the many biographies of successful people I
have studied and read, one
specific trait keeps showing
up; and that word is “Diskarte”. Successful people
from Soccoro Ramos (founder of National Bookstore),
Henry Sy (SM Shoemart),
to Allan Pineda (Apl. De.
Ap of the Black Eyed Peas)
attribute diskarte to their
success, and I believe that
it’s the main factor that got
them to where they are today.
So what is this thing called
“Diskarte”? It is simply defined as an approach, whether you are trying to park your
car, solve a problem or win
the affection of the person of
your dreams. Simply put, it’s
how you go about in achieving your ideal outcome. My
own personal definition of
diskarte is “action mindset”.
When you are approaching a
task, problem or a challenge,
even pursuing a worthwhile
goal, you first need to have
a positive mindset that the
challenge is conquered and
it is already yours. You then
start making moves to obtain
that outcome.
Everyone has diskarte; it
comes easier to some because they use it more often
(take action consistently).
The solution is to believe,
act and repeat when facing
a challenge. When you approach challenges with the
mindset that things will fall
into your favour, opportunities will present themselves
and it will free up more
options. Having diskarte
gives back your mojo and
confidence, which in turn
eliminates fear of failure and
boosts that winning feeling.
Here are some tips to sharpen you diskarte:
- See the problem as a
challenge that will reap
you a great reward.
-Write down five ways
(or more) to solve the
specific problem.
- Quickly implement the
strategies as soon as
possible.
-Learn from people who
went before you – they
already came up with
the answers.
-Keep seeking for the
answer/outcome until
you are 100% satisfied.
-Remember to follow
your intuition and
know that there is
always a way to solve a
problem no matter how
big it may seem.

and reaching all-time highs,
everyone looks happy. Who
wouldn’t put a smile when
his portfolio is getting greener?
It’s a different story when
the market is down and you
are down as well. You might
likely be troubled.
Just like during earthquakes, an investor is likely
to panic and be confused.
Most would run away from
the stock market. Is this the
right emergency measure?
When the party ends
Just recently, a guy asked me
what to do with his shares of
a company that’s down, even
if the market is up, since he
bought them. This company
is one which I don’t and won’t
put my money into. It’s in a
highly competitive industry.
But he’s in it.
If others have it easy advising an investor like him,
I find it so difficult. I have a
hard time saying ‘sell’ or ‘buy
more.’ It’s his money that’s
involved. I may be part of the
blame when his expectation
is not met.
It would be doubly difficult if the market and he are
both down. I might be forced
to advice a guy to sell at a big
loss. It would definitely pain
me to see him lose money.
But if you happen to invest
in a wonderful business and
the market is down, I am
calm and could advise you
according to what I learned
from successful investors,
especially Warren Buffett.

up. This is, by the way, what
most investors are missing.
Most are like Chicken Little.
They always see danger and
run scared.
Don’t panic
To whom do I go when I’m
down and confused? To Warren. Allow me to let the billionaire speak:
“There’s no reason we
should become fearful if a
stock goes down. If a stock
goes down 50%, I’d look
forward to it. In fact, I would
offer you a significant sum of
money if you could give me
the opportunity for all of my
stocks to go down 50% over
the next month.”
He further stresses, “A
market downturn doesn’t
bother us. For us and our
long term investors, it is an
opportunity to increase our
ownership of great companies with great management
at good prices. Only for short
term investors and market
timers is a correction not an
opportunity.”
So, when you’re down
and troubled and you need a
helping hand, you can count
on this guy. He’ll come running with his investment
principles.
One last thing, Warren
says, “With a wonderful
business, you can figure
out what will happen; you
can’t figure out when it will
happen. You don’t want to
focus on when, you want to
focus on what. If you’re right
about what, you don’t have
to worry about when.”
There will be times when you
buy shares now and the next
thing you know your shares
are down; or you may realise
later you bought shares at a
higher price.
I tell you, when you are
down, many thoughts come
into your mind. ‘I made a
mistake,’ ‘I bought stocks at
expensive price,’ ‘I should
not have listened to my broker/adviser,’ ‘I entered at the
wrong timing,’ and the like.
And many investment
advisers will tell you to sell
to cut losses!
To buy more shares during
a time when everyone else is
selling is like “are you crazy?”
An expert suggests that when
you incur 7 to 8 percent loss,
you should sell to cut losses.
Here is my view: if a wonderful company that you
own becomes less expensive,
would you not buy more
shares? If you happen to buy
say at P10 and it went down
to P7, would you sell? Why
should you sell when prices
become so cheap?
So, assuming you bought
that great business at any
price and you are down, don’t
panic. Don’t sell, buy more!
It’s time for you to have more
piece of the pie.
Down markets do happen
not to scare you. It’s rather an

is according to Fred Jover,
Chairman and one of the
founding members of the
Australian Council for Multicultural Entrepreneurs
(ACME). “We might be competing but it doesn’t mean
we cannot support each
other,” Jover said during
ACME’s first quarter business meeting and induction
of new executive committee
members. The event was
held last 26 March 2015 at
the Lakeside Room of Bayview on the Park Hotel.
The business tips shared
by special guests of honour,
Manny Spiteri, Chief Executive Officer of BusinessAide
Pty Ltd, and Philippine
Honorary Consul to Victoria Felix Pintado were well
received by those who attended. Guests noted it was
the best ever ACME event
they attended due to the
speeches of the two guest
speakers.
Mr Spiteri, who has 40
years of academic and business experience leading
national, international and
multinational organisations,
shared some business tips.
Some of these are: 1. Learn to
let go of duties and empower
other people; 2. Learn to
macro view but understand
the micro side of business
operations; 3. Hire smart
people as business owners
cannot do everything; 4. Celebrate the success of people
who are part of the business;
5. Always hold a positive
outlook because it will lead
to positive results; 6. Discover new opportunities
as this will lead to growth,
and 7. Not to give up easily
as challenges will always be
part of the business.
Meanwhile, Consul Pintado, in his inspirational
speech, advised the group
to identify business and
personal concerns and imagine putting them in a round
table then identifying items
they could and could not
control. To the pocket of
items they can control, there
is a circle of commitment
and one should pick those
that one can act on.
Consul Pintado further
shared five actions that good
leaders do: 1. They challenge the process and ask
why things are being done
a certain way; 2. They have
a vision and inspire people
to attain a noble future; 3.
They give their power away
to enable other people to act;
4. They serve as a good role
model to encourage teamwork and cooperation, and
5. They celebrate success
as this encourages a sense
of pride and energy to team
members.
