A Message From the Principal:
I am sure you feel the same urgency I feel both as the principal and as a parent
of a senior. It seems like yesterday that he was following me around as the bat
boy when I coached high school baseball. I am sure you can empathize with the
uneasiness as his mom and I try to prepare for him to leave…
It has been a fantastic year; I appreciate all the encouragement I have received
from the staff and community. As I work and visit with parents in my office,
I often get the chance to pass on the advice I received from my parents,
especially my mother. As a young parent years ago, I once asked her what the
key to being a good parent is. Her reply made me smile and made me feel
better about my own parenting skills… “If I knew what it took, I would write a
book and get rich.”
• If you have a strong willed or hard headed child, you must give them a choice. If you tell them what they have to do, they will instantly fight back. With that, as a parent, you have to be willing to live with the options and be willing to live with the consequences that unfold.
• My parents were big fans of discipline. It was important to understand what the definition of discipline is. The root word of discipline means “to teach.” The purpose of discipline is to teach, not to punish.
• When you discipline your children, it must hurt. Sitting them in time out when time out does not matter to them is not effective discipline. Taking away an electronic device may be the best discipline that a teenager faces, as you know this is an extra limb…
• Never threaten with something that you are not willing to follow through with. I have heard of parents threatening to drop off their child out in the middle of Utah on their way home from Las Vegas because their children are fighting in the back of the car.
If you have any words of advice you would like to pass on, please send it
my way. Moving to the close of the year, we will have our final Community
Partnership meeting on April 7th at 6:00. We will continue the discussion on
what goals you would like to see change at PHS for the future.

The party at the pound is April 18th from 7:00 until 11:00. The cost is $5.00, for 4 hours of entertainment
and food. We will have casino games, cart races around the halls, a jousting bump and jump, and many
more fun activities. When the evening is winding down, students will have the opportunity to win some
fantastic prizes. Students will put their tickets into different drawings, and the lucky winners will be drawn.
We are working to gather prizes, any help is appreciated. In the past, prizes included a 46” flat screen
TV, Beats headphones, a Go Pro, mini fridge filled with soda, portable BBQ grill, gift cards with different
denominations, and many more prizes. It is a great fun filled evening for our PHS students.

Clinic days are apart of tryouts that is where you learn the material needed for your tryout day. You MUST
have a current physical done by a doctor. All paperwork for athletics as well as physical form can be

Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry Camp

Counselor’s Corner
SCHEDULING FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR
We will be scheduling all current PHS students during the months of March and April. Students will
schedule by grade level, beginning with the current junior class. Appointment times will be given by
attendance percentages.
Current sophomores Scheduling-Information meeting: Monday, April 13, 7:25am (before school)
Current sophomores schedule: Thursday, April 16, by appointment.
Current freshmen Scheduling-Information meeting: Monday, April 20, 10:25am (Club Time)
Current freshmen schedule: Thursday, April 23, by appointment.
CMU EARLY SCHOLARS MEETING WED. APRIL 8, 6:30pm
Students (along with parents) interested in enrolling for CMU classes to earn both high school and college
credit must attend a meeting on Wednesday, April 8th at 6:30pm in the PHS library. At the meeting we will
discuss how the process works, complete necessary applications, and search for CMU classes to fit the
students’ needs. The following conditions apply:
• College courses must align with the student’s ICAP (Individual Career and College Plan as noted in Naviance).
• The student must have exhausted all the course offerings at PHS in the given academic area.
• Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a PLAN or ACT test score of 17 in Reading (for all CMU classes) and 19 in math (for all CMU math classes).

INCOMING FRESHMAN Family Night May 7th @ 6:30
On Thursday, May 7th, we will have our Parent Orientation for
next year’s freshmen. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30,
and there will be an informational meeting in the auditorium
beginning at 6:30 for all incoming 9th grade families. Any
student who is not in IB AND is coming from a school other
that Mount Garfield MS should meet in the Library at 5:30 to
fill out enrollment paperwork and schedule their 9th grade year.

SUMMER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
R-5 is offering online classes you can complete from home. Cost: $100 per class
Palisade will be offering computerized classes daily from 8:00 – noon, May 27-June 19. See your
counselor for more information and to sign up. Cost: $50 per class
Palisade is offering an accelerated Computer Applications summer class June 8th-June 24rd from 8amNoon. If you would like more information on this course please email
[email protected] or come see a counselor in the counseling office. Cost is $75.
ACT PREP
Students are encouraged to use the free online ACT prep offered through
march2success.com. This website offers test-taking strategies, subject review, and vocabulary practice
to enhance a student’s score on the ACT test. There are also several timed, full length practice ACT tests
available for students to practice their pacing. Students can access the free course through Naviance
Family Connection. On the main sign-in page click “ACT online prep” on the left hand side.
All juniors are encouraged to take at least one practice test before the ACT test on April 28th.
ACT PRACTICE TEST
April 18th: PHS library from 8am-Noon. Please sign up in the counseling office.
ACT Test and Registration
The ACT registration and test is mandatory for ALL
juniors and will be here at PHS. The registration
date is Thursday, April, 16th from 2:40pm-3:40pm
(just before parent/teacher conference) Make up
registration will be Thursday, April 23rd from 1:45pm2:45pm (during Dog Day). Social Security numbers
are required for registration.ACT testing day is
Tuesday, April 28th. Student’s room assignments will
be posted in the Dog Run hallway on Thursday, April
23rd. Students are expected to bring a calculator
and a #2 pencil.
HELP FOR TEST ANXIETY

for Tests, a researchbased strategy to reduce
test anxiety and improve
concentration. The
program uses an active
control test anxiety
reduction CD, which takes
about 30 minutes.

The CD is found to reduce test anxiety for most of the test-anxious students and to provide some benefit
on tests.
Sessions will take place on Tuesday April 14 from 3:00-3:40, and Tuesday and Thursday, April 21 &
23rd (dogdays) from 2:00-2:40. It’s recommended that students participate in two sessions. Students
under 18 will need to bring a note from a parent or guardian giving them permission to participate. Go to
TestAnxietyControl.com for more information on this anxiety reduction training.
COLLEGE ADMISSION TESTS
To register for the National (optional) test dates,
Register online at: ACT-- www.actstudent.org & SAT-- www.collegeboard.org
• Registration materials are also available in counseling office.
• Postmark registration deadline is approximately four weeks before test date.
Students in any grade can take the ACT or SAT on the national test dates. The ACT can be taken up to 12
times with the best score added to your transcript.
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
• Scholarship information sent to the counseling office is updated regularly on Naviance. Emails regarding scholarships are also being sent through your Naviance email account; if that account is not up-to-date, you will not be receiving these scholarship emails.
• Students should check Naviance frequently.
• Check with the college you plan on attending for scholarships for which you may qualify.
• Further scholarship information can be found online at www.fastweb.com or tuitionfundingsources.com
• If you are not receiving these emails and are unsure why, please see your counselor.
SENIORS
All Seniors MUST complete their senior exit survey, and turn in their Senior check-out sheet by May 8th.
This is located in Naviance under the “About Me” tab. You will not be allowed to pick up your cap & gown
until this survey has been completed.
• If you haven’t done your FAFSA please come to the counseling office for more information.
• If you’ve been accepted to the Armed Forces or a college come to the counseling office with your letter of acceptance to get your Accepted t-shirt.
• If you’ve received a scholarship or an award, please come to the counseling office with your information.
• Your last day of school is May 8th. Graduation practice is May 9th at 9:00 am in the gym.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS
Students are responsible to schedule and pass the
appropriate classes during their four years at PHS.
If you did not pass a course that is required, it is
your responsibility to meet with your counselor to
reschedule.

In Belize, explore two different ecosystems—jungle and
coastline. Hike through lush forest, ride a riverboat, snorkel in the
Caribbean. Also learn about the fascinating history and culture
of the indigenous people. Visits to the archaeological sites of
Lamanai and Xunantunich shed light on the Mayan culture.
