Why Pledco is using 1R1G1B instead of 2R1G1B in its Full Color screens? 1) We used to use 4 LEDs for one pixel 5 years ago. Two red, one green, one blue. But since then, we have been following the most advanced technology in the LED technology and have been trying to switch to 1R1G1B. For the past 3 years, we have been using 3 LEDs, one red, one green, and one blue. This is the latest method used by the other leading companies. 2) The advantages of 3 LEDs include: a) Less power consumption, 3 LEDs vs 4 LEDs which means less money for running the LED screen in the actual use; b) Better reliability: fewer soldering points means less probability of failure; 3) The reason why 3 LEDs can be used is because the brightness of red LEDs has been greatly enhanced. Red LEDs used to be much dimmer and there were not enough portions of red light in the formula to make white color. Red LED lamps were only 300~400mcd. At that time, green LEDs were already very bright (1200mcd~1500mcd). In order to produce white color, we needed 1 portion of blue+ 3 portions of red+ 6 portions of green. We needed two red LED lamps to produce around 800mcd in the formula. Now we have one red LED lamp which can produce more than 800mcd brightness. 4) With 4 LEDs, people created virtual pixel technology, enhancing the color picture quality when displaying video files. 4 LEDs matched very well with that technology. 5) Now, however, even with 3 LEDs, we are able to create virtual pixel display effects when displaying video files. Many of our competitors do not develop their own technology. They are still using their familiar method of 4 LEDs. The attached tables illustrate the advancement of red LED technology. Table I. From the above tables, we can see that with the new formula of 1R1G1B, we can now get more brightness from red color with just one red LED than we could get with two brightest red color LED lamps 5 years ago. - With the old Nichia formula of 2R1G1B, the brightness of red color ranged from 180mcd~510mcd, which when multiplied by 2 becomes 360mcd~1020mcd, whereas with the new formula Nichia s 1R1G1B, we can get a brightness of red color ranging from 720mcd~2040mcd with just one red LED lamps. - If we are to use Cree LEDs, the brightness of red color from one LED lamp in the 1R1G1B formula is now ranging from 1100mcd~4180mcd if we use the C5SMF series, or 7700mcd~2130mcd if we use the C5SME series. - If we are to use Everlight LEDs, we can get 1220mcd~2040mcd for red color, also much higher than what we could get 5 years ago which was 360mcd~1020mcd for red color on Nichia s 546 series models. Thanks to the advancement of the LED lamp manufacture technology, most of the leading LED screen manufacturers are now using only ONE red LED lamp instead of TWO LED lamps to form a basic pixel. www.pledco.com
