PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
All Year 12 students participated in retreats at Coffs Harbour, Camp Elim or Valla Beach this week. I would like to
congratulate all staff and students as the retreats were very rewarding and successful. I sincerely thank the staff
who gave up their time in support of this integral part of our holistic education at MacKillop College.
A few important points in relation to Year 12 retreats:

they are an integral part of our pastoral and spiritual
formation for senior students;
despite the importance of teaching and learning time in the
lead-up to the Trials and HSC, we think that it is critically
important to take time out to stop, reflect and focus on the
quality of relationships with friends, family and God;
our philosophy of a well-rounded, holistic education means
we need to take time to focus on the broader developmental
needs of the young adults entrusted to our care;
graduating students place a high value on this retreat experience
and, year after year, rate it among the great highlights of their
senior school experience;
the school and diocese invests heavily in retreats by training
teachers to be able to run these experiences;
teachers, most with families of their own, give generously of their
time year after year to take students away and give them a great
retreat experience;
retreats complement our broader spiritual formation program
which includes formal HSC courses in Studies of Religion, daily
prayer, liturgies, Eucharistic celebration, Christian community
service, reflection days and a focus on living out Christ’s
challenge to “love others as I have loved you”;

SCHOOL REVIEW AND IMPROVEMENT
The staff of MacKillop College has commenced the process of renewal and improvement through the Diocesan
School Review and Improvement (SRI) process. At the staff development day on the first day of this term, staff
members completed a survey in the four areas of review, Catholic Identity and Mission, Teaching and Learning,
Organisation and Co-Leadership and Community and Relationships.
We are now ready to invite parents to contribute to this process and I ask that you don’t underestimate the
importance of your role in this review.
These surveys will be distributed next week to parents. I would ask that families keep an eye out for the email
inviting them to have input into MacKillop College’s future. The fifteen minutes it will take to contribute will have
an impact on the work we will do during this term in creating our strategic plan.

Others are reminded that it is College policy for student reports to be withheld on outstanding amounts. Payment is
encouraged to avoid embarrassing moments at the end of this Term. Families experiencing financial difficulty are
asked to contact the College office to discuss alternative arrangements.
Please note: Year 9 parents are reminded that full payment for Canberra is not required until Monday, 13th
October for the Canberra Excursion. Reports will not be withheld on this amount.

INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
Courtney Irwin has been selected to attend the 38th Professor Harry Messel International
Science School for two weeks in June this year. Each year there are a large number of the
highest-quality applications and it is to Courtney’s credit that she is one of the successful
scholars. “The ISS gathers together 140 top science students from eight countries (Australia,
China, Japan, India, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Kingdom) for a twoweek fully residential program of talks by world-renowned scientists, laboratory tours and
hands-on activities... not to mention a swag of social events like the Sydney Harbour cruise

This will be an amazing opportunity for Courtney and we look forward to hearing about her

James Gallagher has been awarded the Frederic Ozanam Scholarship based
on his sound Christian values and ability to complete the HSC in 2016.
This scholarship consists of a grant of $2000 for each year of study to

CONGRATULATIONS
HOCKEY
Congratulations Jacob Searle and Brad Paterson who played for Manning Valley; winning division 2. They now
progress into division 1 next year. Jacob also made the Under 16s all schools state squad and Under 18s NSW state
squad.
Congratulations Josh Dowrick who played for New England and won division 3. Therefore his team moves to

EXAMS
With exam week fast approaching it is essential that all students set up a study timetable. This will assist them in
having a balance of study and leisure. I am happy to help any student set up a study timetable.
Homework club is also available Monday – Thursday afternoon. I would strongly recommend Homework club for
those students who have difficulty completing homework and study.

YEAR 9 NEWS
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations Caitlin Rich and Luka Sagolj.
As part of Student Proclaim, Caitlin Rich and Luka Sagolj participated in a Student Discipleship forum in
Grafton during the school holidays. The students’ commitment included the need to present to the school
community at an assembly and to all staff. Their purpose was to call on student engagement in faith
whilst asking for staff to offer guidance. Both students presented proudly and confidently and have shown
to be great role models for other students within our community.
RUGBY LEAGUE REPRESENTATION
A number of Year 9 boys represented Group 3 rugby league on the weekend in the NSW Under 14/15
Country Championships. I had the pleasure of watching the Under 15 boys play their first game in which
they were victorious. The team lost the following two games yet did not disappoint against some highly
regarded opposition.
Congratulations to Tom Brennan, Jack Sheaves, Logan Ryan, Tyler Hyde, Jed Clarke and Josh
Dwyer on their sportsmanship and great play.
DIOCESAN TOUCH FOOTBALL & BASKETBALL
As a coach and Year 9 Pastoral Leader, it is very pleasing to hear so many positive comments in regards
to Year 9 students participating in sporting events. The following students participated in the diocesan
touch football competition or the CCC Regional basketball championships and received praise from
coaches, parents, opposing players and officials.

NAPLAN
Year 9 completed their NAPLAN testing this week. This can be a difficult time for some students
especially in the lead up to semester one exams. All of Year 9 are to be commended on their effort and
conduct during these exams.
UNIVERSITY OF NSW DRUG RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
A number of our Year 9 PDHPE classes participated in a Drug Research and Education program over the
past week. The University of NSW students were most appreciative of their efforts. As an incentive all
students were placed into a draw for a mini iPad. The winner will be announced at our next year
assembly.

Year 7 undertook NAPLAN testing with maturity and cooperation; such preparedness, high standard of conduct
and a positive attitude should continue for the Semester One examination period in two weeks.

WRITING CLUB
Friday lunchtime in the Junior Library an exciting new literacy program began with the support of one of
our talented English teachers, Nikki Gray. Nikki is leading a group of highly motivated Year 8 students to
explore creative writing in all its forms through a writing club. The focus is the enjoyment of writing to
promote literacy through games, journaling, experience and engagement.

Last week’s question proved to be challenging with lots of attempts but only a few students succeeding with the
correct answer. Jack Redgrove was the only student who solved it on his first attempt. I was very impressed to see
Nicola Di Bona and Isabella Pearson persevere and solve it! Well done to all three students.
A huge congratulations also to the students in Year 7 and Year 9 whose conduct during three days of NAPLAN
was very impressive.

ENRICHMENT NEWS
SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE - WORKING FROM FAILURE TO SUCCESS!
On Tuesday 5th May, 32 Year 9 and 10 students travelled to Kempsey High to compete in the Science and
Engineering Challenge. The students competed against other schools including Camden Haven High, Wauchope
High, Kempsey High, Hastings Secondary College, Nambucca Heads High and Macksville High. They worked in
teams of four on challenges throughout the day, culminating in the grand final of the bridge challenge. Some of the
activities included designing, building and using a bionic hand, constructing an earthquake proof tower with basic
materials, constructing a vehicle to traverse an undulating surface, making a hovercraft, a catapult and a bridge.
Our MacKillop team were leading the point score at the final activity, however unfortunately our bridge whilst it
was very low in weight, was unable to sustain the rigors of testing. A great day of Science was had by all involved2nd place, well done to all those budding engineers!
The students were lucky enough to work with retired engineers from the local Rotary club who motivated and
inspired them throughout the day.
As described by one of the local Rotarians on the day, “Engineering uses some Science with art to make things
better for mankind”

WORLD OF MATHS – ENRICHMENT DAY
On Thursday 30th April, students from Years 8, 9 and 10 were treated to an enrichment day of Mathematics run by
the “World of Maths” program. The day involved problem solving and real life applications of Maths with students
working collaboratively in groups of four. They rotated around the activities, attempting to solve the problems
along the way. This day proved to be challenging, engaging and lots of fun for all the students involved.

MATHS CHALLENGE FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS – MCYA
What a great response I have received to the Maths Challenge. We have almost 30 students across Years 7-10 who
will embark on three weeks of challenging Maths problems to extend themselves beyond the normal Mathematical
content of the classroom. This year I am pleased to say that some of our MacKillop girls are also giving it a go,
well-done girls!
The Challenge will commence on Monday of Week 7, 1st June. Students will be notified via the morning notices to
meet and receive their packs and to obtain all information relating to the challenge.
We wish them all the best of luck.
Payment is now due for this activity - $22.50 per student. Please send this payment to the office in a clearly marked
envelope.
CRYSTAL GROWING – LET YOUR CHILDREN SHINE!
RACI- Royal Australian Chemical Institute
The crystal growing competition is on again in 2015 where students grow their own crystals and have them judged
on shape and clarity as well as size. This is a fun activity for any student who would like to give this a go at home.
The crystals must be made from Potash Alum (potassium aluminium sulphate). If any students are interested they
are asked to contact me for some alum, helpful tips and information.

IS THERE A FORMULA FOR LOVE?
The Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) is involved in the launch of the movie x+y, which has hit the cinemas of
Port Macquarie. The AMT have been working with the Australian distribution company on promoting the movie.
x+y follows Nathan, an awkward, idiosyncratic teenager, grappling with the sudden death of the one person who
understood him; his father. As he struggles to connect with those around him, he is introduced to an anarchic and
unconventional Math’s teacher who takes Nathan under his wing. Soon Nathan finds himself selected for the UK
mathematics team and, against the odds, representing his country in Taipei. Over there, the academically gifted
aren’t bullied but celebrated, envied and even invited to parties. Nathan’s rational brain can cope with the most
complex of maths problems just fine; the real test comes when he meets his female exchange partner, Zhang Mei,
and has to cope with falling in love: the most irrational thing of all.
This sounds like a warm and inspiring movie that many of our academically gifted students will relate to. I
encourage the parents of those children to share this experience with your child and to celebrate your child’s
wonderful gifts.
2015 YOUNG SCIENTIST PAPER PLANE CHALLENGE – STANSW
(Science Teachers Association of NSW)
The inaugural Young Scientist Paper Plane Challenge will be held at The University of Sydney Open
Day, on Saturday 29th August. It is open to all NSW school students. Secondary students can enter in
the furthest distance (7-12) or the longest airtime (K-12). Students are allowed to enter both the
distance and the airtime events; however, they must qualify individually for each event.

LEGAL STUDIES NEWS
On Thursday, the two HSC Legal Studies classes were privileged
to listen to a presentation from representatives of The A21
Campaign – a non-profit organisation focused on abolishing
human trafficking in the 21st century.
The presentation was very helpful to our studies, as it provided
valuable first-hand information into a non-legal response that
aims to promote and prevent the issue of slavery and human
trafficking from occurring.
We would all like to thank the representatives for travelling from
Sydney to deliver the information, and of course to Mrs Bailey
for organising the event.

GIRLS AND BOYS BILL TURNER
The girls and boys Bill Turner teams are set to go head to head in round three on Monday against St Joseph’s
Regional College and Melville High School respectively. Parents and friends are welcome to come and support our
teams as they on home turf at MacKillop College junior oval – the girls kick off at 9.30am with the boys set to take
the field at 11.30am.
NSWCCC SWIMMING AND DIVING
The dynamic duo of Lucie and Julia Williams competed at the NSWCCC Diving Championships at Homebush last
week. On Monday, Lucie won two gold medals in the 17 and under springboard & platform events for diving. Julia
won a bronze medal with her last dive in the 14 and under springboard.
Both girls now progress through to the NSWCCC All Schools competition and the Pacific Games Trials to be held
at Homebush on Monday and Tuesday.

Our swimmers continue to achieve fantastic results in the swimming pool. Last week they competed at the
NSWCCC Swimming Championships held at Homebush. A special highlight out of the pool was Mekayla
Everingham being given the honour to captain the Diocesan Swimming team. Mekayla has been a member of the
Diocesan Swimming team since Year 7 and was given this accolade as a mark of respect to her dedication and
commitment to swimming over the years.

CCC BASKETBALL
The Lismore Diocesan Basketball Championships were held in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
of Week 3. MacKillop College entered teams in six divisions and we achieved some excellent results.
The Year 7 and 8 girls finished second, winning 4 out of 5 games. Our Year 7 and 8 boys also finished second,
winning 3 out of 5 games. The best result was from our Year 9 and 10 boys who finished first in their division,
winning all 5 games. The Year 9 and 10 girls finished 5th as did the senior boys, while the senior girls also placed
second.
All of these students are to be commended on their behaviour, co-operation and sportsmanship. A very big thank
you to our coaches Andrew Lister, Brad Lockwood, Lianna Gee, Ryan Adams and Eliza Grose who gave up many
hours to prepare our teams and to travel away with us. Also a special thanks to Michelle Marino who travelled with
us and was a great support in many ways.
A sincere thanks to all students for a great tournament and for being so easy to travel with. They really made the
trip worthwhile! A final congratulations to the Year 9 and 10 boys and their coach Andrew Lister on their excellent
win.

Thank you to Mr O’Brien, Mr Adams, Mrs Marino, Eliza Grose, Lianna Gee (Student), Mr Lockwood and
Mr Lister (parents) for coaching our Basketball teams. The effort and expertise provided by all of our coaches
ensured our players had excellent preparation and therefore assisted in achieving great results at the Basketball
Championships. Our 9/10 boys automatically qualify for the NSWCCC Finals and we await the decision to see if
the junior boys and girls wild card entries are successful.

GLASSHOUSE LUNCH CONCERT
Congratulations to the MacKillop College Big Band and Jazz Ensemble (“The Groove Merchants”) who performed
to a sizeable audience on the steps of the Glasshouse last Friday as part of the Mid North Coast Conservatorium of
Music lunch concert series. The sun was shining and a wonderful program of jazz tunes was well received by the
audience. The following students displayed skill and confidence and are to be commended on their performance.

BIG BAND BLAST 2015
The MacKillop College Big Band will again participate in this year’s Big Band Blast music festival to be held in
and around the Glasshouse and Town Green across the weekend of 29th to 31st May. All students should have
registered at the main office. Registration is required in order for students to perform at the concert on Saturday
(1.00pm – 2.00pm) and to participate in all workshops and concerts throughout the weekend.
The Big Band will perform on the Sundowner Grasshouse stage between Sundowner Caravan Park and Zebu from
1.00pm – 2.00pm on Saturday 30th May. This concert is free and open to the public. As such you are invited to
come and support the students and enjoy some good jazz music!
PERFORMING ENSEMBLES SHIRTS
Orders for Performing Ensemble Shirts have been placed. These shirts should arrive within the next couple of
weeks, hopefully in time for Big Band Blast. Thank you for your patience.

MUSIC NOTES
This year all the SAPSS Instrumental students have the wonderful opportunity of attending a Band Camp that is
being held at Valla Beach Tourist Park. The camp is being held from Friday evening, 7th August,
Saturday, Sunday and returning to Port Macquarie on the afternoon on 10th August which is a Staff Development
Day for all schools.
The Camp will be run by a guest conductor from Sydney and we are in the process of booking a drum line expert
from another school to work with our wonderful drum line.
There will be a note sent out next week with the price and itinerary for the weekend. We need to have numbers as
soon as possible to confirm our accommodation.

CHRISTIAN OUTREACH PROGRAM
SING FOR THE SOLOMONS FUNDRAISING CONCERT
On Thursday 4th June students involved in the “Make A Difference” Solomon Islands Program will be staging a
fundraising concert from 6.00pm to 8.00pm in the MacKillop Performing Arts Theatre. The purpose of the concert
is to raise funds for our Solomon Islands sister school in Visale and for those in need following the recent
earthquake in Nepal. In addition students hope to raise awareness across the community about the “Make A
Difference” program and their imminent trip to Visale at the end of this term.
The concert is open to the public and will feature vocalists from Years 10 to 12 performing with the MacKillop
College Senior Stage Band, Big Band, Vocal Ensemble and the St Agnes Parish Jazz Band. Performances will
include a number of jazz, funk, soul, R&B and contemporary pop charts.
Tickets can be purchased at the MacKillop College main office, $5.00 single or $10.00 family (please be aware that
seats are limited). Tea, coffee and a light supper will be available at intermission on the night. In addition, raffle
prizes will be drawn on the night that includes a signed Michael Clarke cricket bat (tickets are available for
purchase through the school).
This will be a very entertaining evening in our new Performing Arts Theatre celebrating the musical talents of our
school community and supporting those in need. We hope to see you there!
