2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Gala
A Celebration of “Roberto Clemente Day”
 Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by
commemorating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain,
Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
 Combining celebration with philanthropy, the Chamber will hold a gala celebrating “Hispanic Heritage Month” and
“Roberto Clemente Day.” The Gala, which benefits the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce (PMAHCC ) Foundation Educational Fund, will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Westin
Convention Center Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh. Following a cocktail hour, Latin inspired dinner and program with
keynote speaker Luis Clemente (son of the late Roberto Clemente), guests will dance the night away to live
Latin music.
 Roberto Clemente Day was created by Major League Baseball in 2002 as a league-wide effort to honor the memory
of Roberto Clemente and recognize the local club nominees for their humanitarian efforts. Originally known as The
Commissioner’s Award, the award recognizes those individuals who truly understand the value of helping others. A
panel of baseball dignitaries, including Vera Clemente and Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig annually selects a
winner from a list of 30 nominees, one from each Major League baseball club. The 2015 Roberto Clemente Day will
be celebrated on September 16.
 We will announce our 2015 college and graduate school scholarship recipients at the Gala, as well as the 2015
recipient of the "Rob Vega Memorial Scholarship," which was conceptualized in 2013 and first awarded in 2014. In
2014, 16 scholarships, totaling $27,000 were awarded to qualifying area students of Hispanic/Latino decent.
Additionally, in just four years, 42 scholarships totaling $63,000 have been awarded.
Reaching the fastest-growing population in Pennsylvania
 Pennsylvania’s Latino population is the fastest‐growing ethnic group in the Commonwealth.
According to the Census 2010 data, the Latino population grew by 82.6 percent between 2000 and
2010, a historic increase of 325,572. The Latino population now accounts for 5.7 percent of the
state’s total population. During that same period, the region’s Hispanic population nearly doubled.
A 2013 regional report indicates a Hispanic population of 35,686, an increase of 19 percent in
merely three years.
Recent Activities/Accomplishments of PMAHCC
HOLA PITTSBURGH
The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) has embarked on a year-long talent
attraction campaign. The initiative, working though ¡Hola Pittsburgh!, is seeking to entice Latinos living in the United States
or relocating, to set their sites on Pittsburgh as a job and visitor destination. A partnership of government, business and
nonprofit organizations and chaired by the Greater Pittsburgh Metropolitan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, ¡Hola
Pittsburgh! seeks to improve the diversity and inclusiveness of the Pittsburgh region to sustain its population, economic
prosperity and quality of life.
Salsa Cruise
Members and friends of PMAHCC sailed the
Three Rivers during the Inaugural Salsa
Cruise on the Gateway Clipper. PMAHCC
continues to create new opportunities to
bring together Pittsburgh’s Hispanic
community, while at the same time
showcasing the City’s assets.
Pittsburgh Hispanic Chamber Makes Culinary Connection for Local Latino Restaurants
“Industry experts estimate that chain restaurants are 2 to 3 times more profitable than
independent operators,” remarked Ron Alvarado, Chairman of the Chamber. “The purpose of the
trip is to give our local restaurateurs the tools and knowledge they need to become as profitable
as the national chains.”
The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) in collaboration
with Gordon Food Service (GFS) and the Duquesne University Small Business Development
Center (SBDC) assembled local Latino restaurants and gave them access to a “world class”
culinary industry event --- including access to 400 vendors displaying thousands of products and
services, admittance to industry educational seminars, etc.
Networking: The PMAHCC hosts some of the largest and best attended Hispanic oriented networking
opportunities in the Greater Pittsburgh area. Our members have a unique opportunity to mix and
mingle with Pittsburgh’s movers and shakers in some of the area’s finest venues.
