Sheila NaGeira
– Canada’s Own Princess
Marilyn Helmer
Last month, England
celebrated the birth of a new
royal princess. You may be
surprised to learn that here in
Canada, we have our own
princess to celebrate. At least, according to
legend we do…
The legend of Princess Sheila NaGeira dates
back to the early 1600s. The story began as she
sailed from Ireland to France on a small ship
named the Curragh. Some say that Sheila was
the daughter of John NaGeira, King of County
Down, and that she was traveling to France to
study with her aunt in a convent. Others say that
Sheila’s father was Sir Hugh O’Connor, heir to
the Throne of Connaught. He was sending her to
France to escape the English invasions of
Ireland, during the reign of Elizabeth I.
On the way, the Curragh was seized by Dutch
pirates and the passengers and crew were all
taken prisoner. Fortunately the attack was
witnessed by a trio of ships heading for
Newfoundland. The captain of one of those
ships, privateer Peter Easton, rushed to the
rescue. He seized the Dutch ship and took the
captives safely onboard his vessel.
Sheila NaGeira was now on her way to
Newfoundland. During the voyage, she fell in
love with a young lieutenant named Gilbert Pike.
They were married by Captain Easton before the
ship arrived in Harbour Grace. Soon after, Gilbert
left the Navy. He and Sheila settled in Bristol’s
Hope where Gilbert earned his livelihood as a
fisherman.
Some versions of the legend end here. Others go
on to tell of a pirate attack on Bristol’s Hope
during which Gilbert Pike and the other men
were taken captive. Gathering her courage and
determination, Sheila took charge and the small
community survived and thrived. After fifteen long
years in captivity, the men managed to escape
and make their way back to Bristol’s Hope to be
joyfully reunited with their families. Tales abound
of Sheila’s amazing spirit and leadership while
the men were absent.
Other stories have been added to the legend,
too. Peter Easton left privateering for the more
lucrative career of piracy. He became one of the
most feared pirates of that era. For a while,
Gilbert Pike worked with him. But eventually, at
Sheila’s urging, he left piracy and become a
successful fisherman. The older of their two
children is believed to have been the first
European child born in Newfoundland. Sheila
herself was one of the most respected women of
her time.
A grave stone behind the 200-year-old Pike
house in Carbonear marks the final resting place
of John and Julian Pike and Princess Sheila
NaGeira Pike. The dates given on the headstone
indicate that Princess Sheila lived to be 105
years old. Whether her story is fact or legend,
many Newfoundlanders take great pride in
tracing their
forefathers back to
Sheila NaGeira, the
Carbonear Princess.

President’s Message…
Fred Dick
Here I am again for my monthly President's Message. This
time it's with a sense of gratification about what has transpired
over the month.
As I mentioned last month we were in the process of compiling
an ownership/responsibility list for the items here at Pine
Meadows. The list was completed and I met with Don Vallery
and we were able to come to a successful agreement. Don,
myself and the others involved sat down and came to a
mutually satisfactory conclusion, no fuss, no muss and no
tension. It was a pleasure.
When the final drafts are put together, they will be posted for all residents to see.
I would also like to bring to the attention of the residents the fact that now that the good weather has
returned, there are some wonderful activities to get involved in.
I understand the Shuffleboard courts will be getting a bit of a face lift and the interest is growing. As
well, the horseshoe pits are now in use. If these or any other activities interest you, check the notice
boards for a signup sheet. Any questions involving Pine Meadows activities can be directed to our
Activities Director, Clyde Henry.
To any Committee Leaders, the funding sheets have been sent out. If your activity requires any
funding, please complete them and return them to the Treasurer, Gabbi Filce, by June 6.

Maintenance Cost Review Committee (MCRC)
May, 2015 Meeting
Peggy Barton, Recording Secretary
The Maintenance Cost Report for April 2015 still
has us in a favorable position even with the
expenses for the month showing a fair bit higher
than the previous month.
There will be construction this summer around
the homes that were dealing with frozen pipes
this winter – please keep an eye out while
driving in this area.
The full report as always is posted in the
board room.
The final phase of the replacement of
RBC1 will happen over the next few
months and we have been advised that
there will be construction and at times heavy
equipment in and around that area. Please
keep an eye out while driving in that area.
The regular scheduled testing/inspection
of the generators has started and all are in
working order. In the case of a major power
outage these generators will ONLY provide
running water and flushable toilets in the homes.
No power, no heat or A/C will be provided to
homes. The workshop will be the only building
that will have power and heat.

From the Chef’s Kitchen…
Lynda Young
This is one of my ‘go to’ recipes for company. It is
simple to make and looks impressive on a dessert
plate.
Panna cotta is Italian for ‘cooked cream’. It is a light,
silky eggless custard using unflavoured gelatin to give
it structure. It is very easy to make and can be done
in advance.
With strawberry season coming up the preserves that
go with this recipe are perfect. It sounds a bit ‘odd’
but the spicy flavour of the pepper, the tang of the
vinegar and the creaminess of the panna cotta go
really well together. You don’t have to use an
outrageously expensive balsamic because you will be
cooking it down. If you don’t think that you would like
the black pepper and vinegar combination, try it with
some strawberries macerated with some orange or
lemon liqueur or just stir a bit of sugar into some fruit
(strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches,
etc.)...
Panna Cotta
Makes 6 Servings
2 tablespoons water
1¼ teaspoons unflavoured gelatin
2 cups whipping cream
1¼ cups plain whole-milk yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup sugar
Pour 2 tablespoons water into small bowl. Sprinkle gelatin over water. Let stand until softened,
about 15 minutes. Whisk 1 cup cream, yogurt, and vanilla in large bowl to blend. Heat remaining 1
cup cream and ½ cup sugar in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves and
cream comes to simmer. Remove from heat. Add gelatin mixture, stirring to dissolve gelatin. Mix hot
cream-gelatin mixture into yogurt mixture. Divide mixture among six ¾ cup ramekins, using about ½
cup for each. Refrigerate desserts uncovered until cold, then cover and refrigerate overnight. To
serve the panna cotta run a knife around the edge of each ramekin and unmold onto individual
serving plates.
Strawberry Preserves with Black Pepper and Balsamic Vinegar
Makes about 2 cups
2 cups strawberries, trimmed and quartered
1½ cup sugar
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
3 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
In a small heavy saucepan bring all ingredients to a boil, stirring, and skim
surface. Simmer the mixture, stirring and skimming foam occasionally, 15
minutes, or until thickened and translucent. Remove pan from heat and
cool preserves completely. Preserves keep, covered and chilled, 1 month.
Top your panna cotta with the preserves.
