Pop’s Story THE DAILY Pops has lived in the East End all his life. Growing up just after the war, Pops witnessed the Spitalfields’ transition from a traditional society of markets, trading and textiles into a vibrant post-war economy where television, juke boxes, teddy boys and new fashions brought new life to the area. Working all his life in the fish and chips business, Pops believed that he could make the best fish and chip shop in London’s East End. He wanted the best fish from Billingsgate, the fluffiest, crispest chips and classic favorites like jellied eels. Not only this, but feeling nostalgic himself and believing others would feel the same, Pops has recreated the era, of 1940s and 1950s London with his amazing collection of memorabilia. It has taken years for Pops to find the juke box, the authentic Beefeater uniform, his model aeroplanes, gas masks and other reminders of the past. It is great way to remember the many people who made the East End their home and those who, in one way or another, have touched his life. Poppies’ owner, Pops Newland, has been serving fish and chips in the East End all his life. Our menu includes mouth watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas. Served piping hot, our sustainably caught fish originates from Peterhead Fisheries and is delivered daily by T.Bush, a third generation family business at Billingsgate Market. We only buy fish of the finest quality which is prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. Our jellied eels are supplied by Mick’s, renowned throughout the East End both for their quality and the sustainable practices that bring them to your plate. If you use our take away service, then it will be wrapped in newspaper just as it was in the old days. For those with a sweet tooth, we have included some traditional English puddings such as apple pie, Cartmell’s award winning sticky toffee pudding from Cumbria and ice cream from the Minghella family business on the Isle of Wight. When Pops was a boy, fish and chips was commonly enjoyed with a cup of tea or cream soda but our menu also includes a wide variety of beers, wines and soft drinks for you to enjoy. You will soon discover that Poppies is more than just a fish bar. Pops has recreated East End London between 1945 and 1955. It was a time of rebirth: the end of the war, the return of our forces from overseas, thriving trade in the food markets and the rebuilding of our city. Hot, quick, tasty, fish and chips were the fuel that powered the people. We want every visitor to Poppies to remember the East End’s golden age with our collection of 1945-1955 memorabilia. Wartime was fresh in Londoner’s minds - as were the stories of luck and heroism. On the walls you will see gas masks that were carried by Londoners throughout the war, model aeroplanes and the rubber ring called the ‘Dunkirk Doughnut’ that rescued troops from the beaches of Northern France. We’ve included a miniature piano as soldiers returning home would have welcomed the chance to get together with friends for a sing-a-long. Yet within a few years the juke box would have brought pop music to their younger brothers and sisters. Ration books were still needed for a number of foods and most families relied on the chickens in their back yard for eggs - but the first televisions were entering people’s homes and changing their lives forever. Poppies source all its fish from sustainable traders at our local Billingsgate fish market. Some fishing methods are wasteful, trawling the seas and discarding any young, small or unwanted fish and diminishing fish stocks. These overly large nets scrape away at the fragile sea bed, damaging the habitat of dolphins, seals and birds in the process. Poppies’ fish is harvested with care from the seas and delivered in wonderful condition to your plate.
