Junior Membership
On behalf of Porthleven Gig Club we would like to welcome you to the world of Pilot Gig Rowing. This information
sheet is to provide you with some information about our Junior Membership. Detailed information can be found on
our website www.porthlevengigclub.weebly.com where you will find information such as Club Contacts, Welfare
Policies, Adult & Social Membership details and Training times. We are members of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association
(CPGA) and full details of their policies can be found at www.cpga.co.uk.
Porthleven Gig Club provides opportunities for young people over the age of 11 to receive coaching and competition
in the sport of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing. Our Welfare Officers are Tony Best and Claire Culm. All junior coaching is
undertaken by Porthleven Gig Club Members who are trained and have a current CRB. If you have any questions or
problems please contact Tony or Claire and we will ensure that your query is dealt with quickly and in confidence.
Inclusion
Junior rowing and competition opportunities offered by the Porthleven Gig Club are open to all young participants
between the ages of 11-16. Junior rowers will receive excellent care and high quality provision in line with CPGA
welfare policies. All participating young people will complete either a Junior Membership Form or Junior Taster
Form before taking part in any club activities. The next of kin/guardian contact details and any relevant health
information will be held by the Junior Rowing Coach.
Participation
Club members and officials will encourage the participation of parents as well as junior members in club activities.
The Junior Rowing Trainer will be responsible for all communications with junior rowers and their families to ensure
their full participation in Club events, both rowing, social activities and at Club meetings. We welcome parents to all
training and competitions and value your support. We are keen to try and involve parents in all aspect of the club
and welcome any ideas or comments that you may have.
Training & Competition Events
Junior rowers will be provided with at least one rowing session on the water a week (weather permitting). All
rowing sessions will be undertaken by the Junior Trainer who is committed to the development of rowing ability to
include opportunities to improve technique and the fitness of all rowers.
Training sessions will take place out of Porthleven Harbour and at Stithians Lake (Winter Training) The Junior Trainer
will ensure that training times and locations are posted in the Gig Shed and will endeavour to post changes to
training or events times and/or locations either by text or by listing an update on our Facebook page. Changes to
training and events can change due to weather conditions. Please ensure that before setting out for training
sessions or events that you have checked for any updates. Rowing Machines and free weight are available for
members to use in the Gig Shed. Training and circuit sessions run in the Gig Shed are run by members for the
members. Porthleven Gig Club does not have qualified gym instructors and use of this equipment is voluntary and
the club cannot accept any liability for any injury sustained however caused at these sessions.
Selection for competition and events will be made by the Junior Trainer and by Junior Captains.
Arrangements should be made for your child to travel to and from training sessions and races. Please ensure that
they arrive promptly and are collected promptly from all training sessions and race events, if they are not making
their own way home. If you will be leaving your child during training or at any race event please ensure that the
Junior Trainer or a Club Member is informed and that we have a current contact number. If you are going to be late
picking up your child please contact the Junior Trainer and let him know.
Porthleven Gig Club
Training Kit & Equipment
Training kit should be warm and comfortable and all rowers should ensure that they have suitable waterproof
clothing in the event that the weather changes whilst on the water. Life jackets are compulsory for all under 16
rowers. Porthleven Gig Club will supply life jackets at all training and race events. Porthleven Gig Club T-Shirts,
Hoodies and Jackets are available. For more information on Club kit please see our website or contact our Club

Junior Membership Fees
Before deciding if you wish to join Porthleven Gig Club, Juniors are allowed 3 taster rowing sessions free of charge
before Membership fees are due. A Junior Taster Form must be completed before anyone is allowed out on the
water.
Porthleven Gig Club Junior Membership for £15.00 to be paid by the beginning of April each year. Lapsed member
will NOT be able to compete in race events, use the Gig Club rowing machines or take part in training sessions.
Junior members are asked to pay £1.00 for race event that they compete in outside of Porthleven. This is a
contribution to the cost of towing the Gig to these events. Towing Fees will be collected by the Junior Coach or
Junior Captains. Occasionally a mini bus with a qualified CRB checked driver is available for Club Members to
transport them to away events. If travelling on this mini bus a small fee will be charged as a contribution towards
fuel costs. If a Minibus is available a sign-up sheet with the bus fee will be posted in the Gig Shed and will be on a
first come first served basis.
Our winter training takes place at Stithians Lake. The SW Lakes Trust charge £2.50 per person for rowers using this
facility. Stithians Lake fees will be collected by the Junior Coach or Junior Captains
Please ensure that Junior members have towing, Stithians Lake or Mini Bus fees as failure to pay fees will result in
your child being unable to compete or train.
