MAN Diesel & Turbo Wins the GST 2015 Award
Most innovative technology put into use in the past twelve months that
benefit the marine environment
On Wednesday evening March 11th MAN Diesel & Turbo won the GST 2015, Green Ship Technology Award – for fuel saving and environmental friendly ship propulsion solutions with the concept: ‘Slow Steaming Optimisation with De-rating and Propeller Upgrade’. A concept which optimises the shipowners’ and operators’ possibilities for slow steaming their existing fleets at reduced and more economical speeds. Beneficial in particular to vessels originally designed and
optimised to higher ship speeds.
The slow steaming, de-rating and upgrading package solution typically has a starting point with
MAN B&W’s two-stroke engine, which will be de-rated and optimised for a new operating point at
a reduced engine speed. An engine re-timing and optimisation can for example include new
MAN turbochargers and fuel injection nozzles. The existing propeller can be retrofitted and upgraded with a new more efficient MAN Alpha Kappel design with optimised blade number and
design – and this can be combined with the fitting of a Mewis Duct for improving the inflow to the
propeller.
Such a solution developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo Copenhagen and Frederikshavn, has shown
tank test results with savings of 17.5% at a ship speed of 12.5 knots for a series of 150 000
DWT Suezmax tankers. Two ships in this series have completed the upgrade and the saving
has also been verified in operation. Another ship series has shown savings of 15% after the upgrade. As a result, the economical benefits for the operators are radical – and the reduced exhaust gas emission of CO2, SOx and NOx are beneficial for the marine environment in general.
All in all an attractive investment with short payback time.
The GST 2015, Green Ship Technology prize was awarded at a ceremony in Copenhagen to
MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Danish PrimeServ organisation – represented by Thomas Leander, Senior Manager Propulsion, Frederikshavn and Christian Ludwig, Senior Manager Two-stroke Retrofit, Copenhagen.
The GST, Green Ship Technology award is an annual prize – competed for by nominated companies at the annual Green Ship Technology Conference. These Awards acknowledge the most
innovative technology put into use in the past twelve months that benefit the marine environment. The aim of these Awards is to recognise the maritime industry's continuing efforts to improve and maintain the marine environment and to mitigate the effects of shipping on it.
