country, rock and blues, where all of the elements blend to form
an authentically raw and rootsy sound that has a timeless and
international appeal.

olfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro has something
for everyone: screwball comedy, a touching love story, and uplifting
moral sentiment. The opera is an adaptation of Beaumarchais’ 1784
play that humorously attacks aristocratic privilege in pre-revolutionary Europe.
Mozart’s music beautifully carries the dramatic action by vividly illustrating the
characters’ emotions and relationships. The Marriage of Figaro remains one of
the most endearing works in the operatic repertory.

Lecture Series 2015
All lectures are free and open to the public.
Mozart 1784–1786 and Le Nozze di Figaro
Catherine Sprague, Historian, Mozart expert and Pianist.
This lecture will focus on Mozart at the peak of his career during the years
1784–1786, when he achieved tremendous success in Vienna. This was the most
productive period of his life, when he produced a masterpiece every two weeks!
Mozart chose to produce Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) even though
it was controversial since the play on which it was based was banned in France
and Austria. Images of life in Vienna during this period and music from some
of Mozart’s compositions written during this time, including some of the most
moving music of Le Nozze di Figaro, will provide context for how 18th century
listeners understood this music.
Catherine Sprague’s book “Mozart’s Salzburg Years” will be published by P
 endragon
Press this year. She is a member of the Mozart Society of America and has appeared
throughout New Jersey with entertaining and informative programs about Mozart.

Princeton Public Library
This lecture is co-sponsored by the Princeton Public Library.
A Marriage of Music and Mayhem: Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro
Timothy Urban, Professor of Music, Rider University.
A variegated tapestry of sexual intrigue, deception, class conflict and, u
 ltimately,
forgiveness: that is the story woven together by Mozart’s music in his most
frequently performed opera, Le Nozze di Figaro. With infinite variety, Mozart crafted
music that depicts, with subtle nuance, the wide range of human emotions lying
behind the story. Timothy Urban, Professor of Music, singer, and instrumentalist, has
been a popular lecturer on Princeton Festival operas for the last eight years, greatly
enhancing all opera-goers’ understanding and enjoyment of the performance.

The Technology of Le Nozze di Figaro
Mark Schubin, historian and engineer specializing in opera media technology.
Last October the Metropolitan Opera transmitted Le Nozze di Figaro live from its
technologically advanced stage to more than 2000 cinemas worldwide. The opera
can also be enjoyed in your home via TV, radio, recordings, downloads, and
streams. But what about the technologies of 1786, when this opera premiered in
Vienna based on a Beaumarchais play first performed two years earlier? You will
be amazed to learn what stage and home-media technologies were available
then. Would new technologies have affected the plot if it had been written just a

few years later? Mark Schubin is an Emmy award winning engineer and historian
specializing in opera media technology. He is a Fellow of the Society of Motion
Picture and Television Engineers and is engineer in charge of the Metropolitan
Opera media department.

Creating The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Michael Unger, theater and opera director.
The play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was first workshopped and
developed at the Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts. The world premiere
production was presented there in July 2004 and co-directed by Michael Unger and
Rebecca Feldman, one of the show’s creators. Unger will discuss his experiences
developing and directing this work accompanied by video and photographs of
the original rehearsal process. Spelling Bee is unique in that audience members
are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the cast members.
Another unusual feature of the musical is the use of an improvisational comedian
as the official pronouncer.
Michael Unger has directed A Christmas Carol at McCarter Theatre for seventeen
years and many musicals, plays and operas around the country. He directed HMS
Pinafore and The Consul for Opera NJ, also at McCarter. He is currently the associate
artistic director of the York Theatre in New York City and the artistic director of the
121.4 Foundation which promotes healing and confidence-building through
high-level performing arts experiences for the community in and around
Sandy Hook, CT.

A Conversation on Directing Opera and Theater Productions
Stephen Wadsworth, Director of Opera Studies, Juilliard School.
Steven LaCosse, Assistant Dean, Fletcher Opera Institute of
the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Last year Stephen Wadsworth directed the highly successful McCarter Theater
productions of Beaumarchais’ two great farces, The Figaro Plays, which inspired
Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and Mozart’s Le Nozze di
Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro). Wadsworth is equally at home directing opera
and spoken theatre productions and will share his expertise as a professor at
the Juilliard School and head of dramatic studies for the Metropolitan Opera
Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He is also an author, translator
and co-author of an opera with Leonard Bernstein. Steven LaCosse will direct the Festival’s 2015 production of Le Nozze di Figaro, his
tenth with us! He is also Principal Stage Director at the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute
at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. With a wide repertory of
over 60 productions, his most recent ones include The Flying Dutchman and Porgy
and Bess for The Princeton Festival, Carmen and The Flying Dutchman for Piedmont
Opera, The Sound of Music and The King and I for Opera Theatre of the Rockies and
The Tales of Hoffmann and Mozart’s La finta giardiniera for the Fletcher Institute.

Figaro, A New Opera Hero
Marianne Grey, Princeton University Art Museum Docent.
The later part of the eighteenth century was a period of great change—politics,
social order and customs were all turned upside down. Old notions about m
 arriage
for profit and prestige were replaced by the idea of romantic love. This is reflected in the world of opera where the stories began to be concerned with real people
and real situations. Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro offers a close look at this interesting
period. These changes and new ideas will be illustrated by portraits, cartoons, genre
paintings and architectural designs. Marianne Grey, a popular lecturer on art and
its relation to history, will transport you back to the atmosphere of an earlier age.
