The mission of
The Prospect Hill Foundation
is to advance
The Prospect Hill Foundation pursues this mission by
making grants in four program areas: Environment, Juvenile
Justice, Nuclear Disarmament & Nonproliferation, and
Reproductive Health and Justice; and with Sponsored Grants
supporting the philanthropic interests and activities of
Beinecke family members. The Foundation’s grants support
activities mainly in the northeastern United States.

The Prospect Hill Foundation is a private foundation
established in New York in 1959 by the late Elizabeth G.
Beinecke and William S. Beinecke, then President and
now the retired Chairman of The Sperry and Hutchinson
Company. In 1983, The Prospect Hill Foundation merged
with the Frederick W. Beinecke Fund, which had been
established by the will of William S. Beinecke’s father and
was later augmented by the will of Carrie Sperry Beinecke,
his mother.

From July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014, grants totaling $2,758,000
were awarded to 86 organizations. In addition, the Foundation’s
matching gifts program awarded $286,223 to 186 organizations.
As of June 30, 2014, the market value of The Prospect Hill
Foundation’s assets was approximately $65,800,000.
Environment
The Prospect Hill Foundation’s environmental program will target issues related to coastal waters and oceans in the mid-Atlantic and southern New England regions from 2010 to 2014.*
Juvenile Justice
The Prospect Hill Foundation seeks to reform the juvenile
justice system in New York. From 2010 to 2015, the Foundation
will fund 1) advocacy efforts that promote policies and practices
that are fair, effective, and appropriate for youth and 2) capacity
building and promotion of community-based alternatives in
New York.**
Nuclear Disarmament
& Nonproliferation
The Prospect Hill Foundation seeks to further nuclear arms control and ultimately abolish nuclear weapons through support for
policy analysis, research and advocacy. The program will focus
its funding to advance support for multi-lateral agreements and
the use of existing international institutions created to limit the
proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Reproductive Health
& Justice
The Prospect Hill Foundation seeks to increase access
to sexual and reproductive health services by supporting advocacy work and building the pipeline for new reproductive justice
leaders in the field. ***
Sponsored Grants
As a family foundation, The Prospect Hill Foundation has a long
history of support for causes and institutions that are personally important to the foundation’s directors and their families.
Grantmaking is directed towards arts and culture, environmental conservation, civic affairs and educational institutions. These
grants reflect the Foundation’s values and philanthropic goals.
* The Foundation’s commitment in this program will continue
beyond 2015.
** Starting in 2014, this program’s new name is Youth Justice.
