AMERICAN BOOKLIST
The Detroit Public Library, encouraged by the positive
response to this annual publication, continues the tradition
of the African American Booklist for 2014 and beyond. This
bibliography provides a selected list of books by and/or about
African Americans. This booklist includes works of fiction and
nonfiction for adults, children and young adults reviewed and
recommended by librarians of the Detroit Public Library.
The African American Booklist began as a way to commemorate
Black History Month and since that time has continued to feature
the accomplishments of African Americans in the literary world.
The booklist has become an annual tradition in the community
and continues to be a highly anticipated publication for book
lovers all across the nation.
This year, the African American Booklist honors one of the
library’s signature events – the E. Azalia Hackley Concert.
Celebrating its 70th Anniversary, the Hackley Concert has been a
yearly tradition in the month of February and this year’s concert
may be one of the best yet. The 2014 E. Azalia Hackley Concert
honors the legacy of Roland Hayes with a special composition by
Patrice Rushen, performed by George Shirley and the Cut Time
Players. To date, the work has never been performed until this
year’s concert.
The 2014 African American Booklist salutes the E. Azalia Hackley
Collection’s concerts for 70 great years as a Detroit musical
tradition.

BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM
LIFT EV’RY VOICE AND SING
Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the
slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.

LETTER FROM
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
When the Detroit Musicians Association (DMA)
presented a 1943 generous gift of original
materials to the Detroit Public Library, it marked
the beginning of the E. Azalia Hackley Collection
of African Americans in the Performing Arts. The
Annual Hackley Concert highlights the materials
in the Collection by featuring performances that
represent the African American contribution to
the performing arts. In 2014, we celebrate the
70th Annual Hackley Concert, a tradition that is
an important part of the Detroit Public Library’s
legacy.
The first several “Hackley Memorial Concerts” were intimate
affairs sponsored by the DMA and held on the lawns of local music
enthusiasts. A part of the program included donations or an
“offering” from the audience, which was used to purchase materials
to expand the holdings of the Hackley Collection, located at Main
Library. Eventually the concerts were moved indoors to the Clara
Stanton Jones - Friends Auditorium, although the performances
by large choral groups were held in local Black churches that could
accommodate the groups. Over the years, the Hackley concerts
have included performances of Negro spirituals, classical, jazz,
gospel, soul, and rhythm and blues, all being representative of the
materials in the Hackley Collection.
It is my pleasure to dedicate the 2014 African American Booklist
to the E. Azalia Hackley Collection’s 70th Annual Concert. Please
consider supporting the ongoing work of the Hackley Collection
and its Annual Concert by joining The Friends of the E. Azalia
Hackley Collection. For membership information, please contact
the DPL Friends Foundation office at 313-481-1357.

HACKLEY BACKGROUND
The E. Azalia Hackley Collection of
African Americans in the performing
arts was established in 1943 when
original materials were presented
to the Detroit Public Library by the
Detroit Musicians Association to
serve as the nucleus for a special
African American music collection.
The first of its kind in the world, the
Hackley Collection – named in honor
of Madame Emma Azalia Smith
Hackley, a Detroit music educator,
E. Azalia Hackley
concert singer, choral director, and
humanitarian – takes its mission from the example she set
in her life. Madame Hackley devoted herself to the musical
education of her people. She traveled the United States
and abroad, presenting concerts, raising funds to support
African American musicians and is best known for her
tireless efforts to promote African-American music.
Madame Hackley is credited with
mentoring and supporting the
careers of Marian Anderson, Carl
Diton, Clarence Cameron White,
Kemper Harreld, and R. Nathaniel
Dett. She is remembered for her
musical genius, her strong racial
identity, her leadership and support
of African American musicians.
In that same spirit, the E. Azalia
Hackley Collection has flourished
as an archival collection of African
Americans in the performing arts.
The collection includes many rare
books, manuscripts and archives of
performing artists that are available

to researchers. One of the most treasured archives in the
collection is that of the Roland Hayes Manuscripts, the
inspiration of the 70th E. Azalia Hackley Concert. In 2000,
the Detroit Public Library with support from the Ford
Foundation, commissioned composer, musician and record
producer Patrice Rushen to write a score in honor of Roland
Hayes. The result, is an amazing composition set to premiere
at this year’s concert entitled, “The Legacy of Roland Hayes”
performed by George Shirley and the Cut Time Players.
HACKLEY CONCERTS
1942-PRESENT
1st Hackley Memorial
Concert Program, 1943
The annual Hackley Memorial Concerts
began as a series of lawn programs
organized by the Detroit Musicians’
Association in 1942. African American
music and local African American
musicians were featured at these
concerts.
A monetary collection
was taken up at some point during
the program, and this “offering” was
used to purchase materials to add to
the growing Hackley Collection. After
the Collection was presented to the
Library, the concerts were moved
indoors to the Clara Stanton Jones
Friends Auditorium at Main Library.
During the 1970s, several concerts
featuring large choral groups were
held in the larger accommodations of
local African American churches.
Over the years, the Hackley Concerts have featured programs
that reflect contributions made by African Americans, including
African performing arts, Negro spirituals, ragtime, jazz, gospel,
opera, orchestral music, soul, and rhythm & blues.
