DCLG NED Appointment - Letter from Melanie Dawes and Sara Weller

Foreword
This is a very exciting time to be coming into Government as we embark on a new
Parliamentary term and look to embrace and respond to the changing landscape that lies
ahead.
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is central to some of the
biggest tasks facing the country and deals first-hand with a fantastic range of issues across
the economy and public services. It plays a major role in meeting the housing demands of
citizens, in supporting the move towards greater decentralisation of powers to local places
and economies and in enabling the creation of vibrant, and cohesive local communities.
Central to the Department’s role is managing relationships with local government and
ultimately giving more power to local people to shape what happens in their area.
The DCLG Ministerial Board has been established since the start of 2011. There are 4 NonExecutive Directors who are part of the Board, and who operate as a team, bringing a range
of skills and experiences to our debates. Non-Executives have an important role in providing
supportive challenge to our Executive Team and the Board’s sub-committees. On this
occasion we are seeking to find a Non-Executive with Board-level experience of sound
financial risk and performance management to provide challenge to the Audit and Risk
Assurance Committee.
Whatever the economic, fiscal and social challenges that have to be overcome in the new
Parliament, it is clear that Non-Executive Directors can play a positive and constructive part
in successfully meeting these challenges.
If you believe you have the ability and enthusiasm to join us in the task, we look forward to
hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Melanie Dawes CB
Permanent Secretary
