The CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimates that in the US: • 5 people will die; • 24 people will be hospitalized; • 117 people will be treated in the ER; and • 275 people will receive no care Every hour of every day from sports and recreational related concussions! That adds up to over 3 million people impacted by sports related concussions a year! While not all concussions can prevented, following appropriate return to play protocols for athletes with concussions is key to preventing more severe concussions in the future. A second concussion injury too soon after a prior one is the leading cause of long lasting effects and long term health issues. The mission of PUCCS Charitable Fund is to provide the tools necessary to understand and prevent concussion as an injury in all sports. Established as a 501(c)3 not for profit organization in 2011, by Dr. Elad Levy, professor and chairman of UB Neurosurgery, as a response to the increase in serious sports-related concussions among youth in the WNY community, PUCCS goal is to become the definitive resource for information relating to childhood concussions and their consequences. Focusing on the areas of education, research and public policy, to date PUCCS has: • • • • • • • • received the Richard Patterson Advocacy Award in 2013 for being a driving force behind getting Lystedt’s Law passed in WNY; participated in the Understanding the Brain event – Buffalo Museum of Science; produced a widely disseminated educational video in conjunction with the Buffalo Sabres; provided funding for: – UB Dept. of Orthopaedics & Psychiatry Community and • Acute Concussion and Recovery Study Event Partrner • Buffalo Bills/Buffalo Sabres Alumni Study • Buffalo Treadmill Test Study – UB Neurosurgery • Biomarkers Study • Repeated Head Injury Study – CNS Fellowship Award – CNS Conference Hot Topic on Concussions produced and distributed over 6,500 concussion cards; conducted school and youth sports speaking engagements & GVI/JI tours which have reached over 20 schools and organizations, 900 students, 300 adults/coaches/faculty; partnered with, and provided materials for a New Hampshire Exeter Community Peer-to-Peer Outreach Program; and produced :30 PSA on concussions with Fred Jackson and Pat Kaleta as part of PUCCS 2015 Winter Concussion Awareness Campaign which also included an autograph signing session, Concussion Awareness Night at a Sabres game, a high school health fair with over 900 students participating, and several fundraising opportunities. Partnership opportunities are available for the 2015 PUCCS Charity Hockey Tournament. There are levels to fit all marketing and charitable giving budgets as well as great packages of benefits at every level. This year PUCCS is utilizing the beautiful design of HarborCenter to also host a Health and Wellness Fair during the two days of the Tournament. Partners at all levels get complimentary space at this vendor fair to display information about your products or services and/or provide give-aways to players and spectator. GENERAL TEAM INFORMATION WHERE: The 2015 PUCCS Tournament will be held in Buffalo, New York at HaborCenter which has a full service hockey shop and concessions, as well as a full service restaurant. More information on HarborCenter can be found at www.harborcenter.com FORMAT: There will be 2 Divisions – Competitive and Recreational. Each Division will have four team play pools for the first round of play which includes 3 preliminary games starting on Saturday, June 13 with each team playing a round robin style first preliminary round within their play pool. Play pool winners will then play other play pool winners within their Division for the Division Championship. POINT SYSTEM: Preliminary play pool games will be played using the point system - 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS: Coaches and players must be over 21 to play and must be playing within their experience level division. All participants must show proof of health insurance and sign waivers at check in. GAME FORMAT: All play pool preliminary rounds will be 30 minutes of play time with 3 ten minute periods. If teams are tied after the end of a second round game, there will be a 5 minute sudden death period. If teams are still tied after the 5 minute sudden death period, there will be a shootout format to determine the eventual winner. RULES: USA Hockey Rules will govern all Tournament play. We will advise all teams of any local playing rules before the start of the Tournament. All teams must be prepared to begin play by 8:00 am on Saturday, June 13, 2015. Check in begins at 7am.
