We are delighted to announce this year’s
lineup for our free outdoor concert at
Pohoiki, with featured artists Makana and
Lito Arkangel.
winning film “The Descendants”. In 2011,
at the apex of the “Occupy” movement,
Makana’s song, “We Are the Many” went
viral on YouTube, garnering more than
half a million views, and was coined
the “Occupy Anthem” by Rolling Stone
Magazine. Makana’s captivating and
wide-ranging performance style has
led him to share the stage with Jason
Mraz and Jack Johnson, open for music
legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis
Costello, and perform in venues ranging
from Asian and European opera houses
to The White House.
Hosted by Jaz and Ka‘ea from KAPA
FM, the day will start off with Kumu
Hula (teacher of hula), Leilehua Yuen
followed by Keiki o ka ‘Aina, a series of
performances by students from local
schools. As the day continues, enjoy
food and shopping from local vendors
along with performances by groups and
artists from throughout Puna.

Makana
Born and raised in the small plantation
town of Kea’au (Ola’a) as well as
Keaukaha on the Big Island of Hawai’i,
Lito Arkangel has been involved in the
creation of music most of his life. Since
1999, Lito has entertained audiences in
Hawai‘i as a professional artist. From
turning pages for his grandmother while
she played piano for the local church,
to decades of backyard jam-sessions,
Lito has become an established full-time
entertainer and musician, making waves
here in Hawai’i, as well as in the Mainland
U.S. and Japan.

Described as “dazzling” by the New
York Times, Makana is an internationally
acclaimed guitarist, singer, and composer
who is widely known for lending his
musical talent for social change. His
guitar playing has been featured on three
Grammy-nominated albums, including

Kalani is excited to host the
contemporary romantic troubadour
RootHub. His style has been dubbed
“Life Music” and his songs leave the
listener vibrating a bit higher. His voice,
deep, gravelly and smoky is familiar, yet
distinct. There is a sensitivity, a positivity
and an honesty that transmits clearly
through his music.

FESTIVAL T-SHIRTS
For the 5th Anniversary of the Puna
Music Festival, we invited5 artists from
Puna to design t-shirts to celebrate this
year's festival.
After departing Los Angeles, RootHub
moved to Oahu, where he found a
deeper connection to the ocean and to
the people of Hawai’i. Drawing from a
vast list of influences – from Bob Marley
to Tom Waits, Nina Simone and Run
DMC, to breaking waves and subway
trains and back again, RootHub has
established a unique style all his own.

Our closing event, the Kanikapila (jam
session) in Pahoa, fills the streets of
Pahoa Village as it comes alive with music
everywhere – from balconies, porches,
windows, inside restaurants, and at the
Historical Akebono Theater.

Our workshops provide immersion
in the musician's craft, with a special
focus on the creative process.
WORKSHOPS
All workshops are held at Kalani, located
halfway between Kalapana and Opihikao.

MARY ISIS
SONGWRITING WORKSHOP
This workshop will take participants on a
journey through one’s own lyrical poetry
of the soul. Through the meditative
process of listening, observing nature, and
observing the Self, participants will be led
to the courageous musical expression of
the impressions and feelings evoked and
inspired. This will be an individual and cocreative experience of singing and creating
music and song together. Please bring
your song book and a pen. If you have an
instrument and recording device, you can
bring that too, but it is not required.

THURSDAY MAY 7 1-4pm
TOMMY OSUNA
FINE TUNING YOUR CRAFT
Join Tommy Osuna in a true opening of
your creative self as you create music
with your mind, body, and soul as your
main instrument. Tommy will guide
you in bringing musicality to your song
ideas, and help you turn them into fullfledged formatted songs. By sharing his
‘Osunalogy Method, Tommy will show
how to take your root idea, and flush the
feelings you have about that idea into an
invigorated song structure. Tommy is well
versed in teaching over 100 instruments
at a professional level, so feel free to bring
additional instruments to class, if you
wish! Come be a part of a truly unique
experience for you to unleash new levels
of creativity in the music you write.
