Jul-Dec 2015 - Pushkin Press

The second half of 2015 is a very exciting time for
Pushkin Press, as we launch a new imprint: Pushkin
Vertigo. This distinctively branded crime imprint will
feature crime classics from around the world; it aims
to create the ideal library for fans of the genre. Six
Pushkin Vertigo books will be published in the coming
six months.
From one imprint to another: ONE is very proud to
present its first book by a British author – Whispers
Through a Megaphone by Rachel Elliot. A stunning take
on the deafening modern world, this is an instantly
enjoyable and moving novel.
We also have a Joycean novel, Before the Feast, a
prize-winning bestseller by the “offensively gifted”
Saša Stanišic´, and we are reissuing his debut How
the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone. Then there is
Late Fame, a novella by the great Arthur Schnitzler,
which was only rediscovered last year and caused a
sensation on its first ever publication in German; we
will be publishing it as a special Collection hardback.
With the eagerly awaited second volume in the
acclaimed Fortunes of France series, as well as books
from Japan, Germany, Argentina and more, this is a list
of the world’s best stories, to be read and read again.

THE P US HKI N C OLLECTION
The Pushkin Collection was redesigned in 2012,
and the spare, elegant series style makes the most
of each new book’s specially commissioned
cover illustration.
Designed by David Pearson and Clare Skeats,
the series has a beautifully crafted arrangement
of the modern and traditional which is both
confident and accessible (as in, for example, the
cover typeface—Johnston, a sans serif which
refers, with its classical proportions, directly to
inscriptions). The new template is an effective
demonstration of design being used to sensitively
refine what already existed and what Pushkin’s
loyal readers already loved.
The Collection is typeset in Monotype Baskerville,
litho-printed on Munken Premium White Paper
and notch-bound by the independently owned
printer TJ International in Padstow. The covers,
with French flaps, are printed on Colorplan
Pristine White Paper.
Zweig’s highly personal last work: a passionate argument
for humanity in times of barbarity
‘He who thinks freely for himself, honours all
freedom on earth.’
Stefan Zweig was already an émigré – driven
from a Europe torn apart by brutality and
totalitarianism – when he found, in a damp
cellar, a copy of Michel de Montaigne’s Essais.
Montaigne would become Zweig’s last great
occupation, helping him make sense of his
own life and his obsessions – with personal
freedom, with the sanctity of the individual.

way back in 1998, and now have a wide range of his
books in print, ranging from his only novel, Beware
of Pity, to his classic memoir The World of Yesterday
via a number of collections of his perfectly crafted
works of short fiction.
