OKSA POLLOCK: THE LAST HOPE ANNE PLICHOTA & CENDRINE WOLF A new heroine, an old evil, an unforgettable adventure Just as we all are, children are fascinated by stories. From the earliest age, we love to hear about monsters and heroes, romance and death, disaster and rescue, from every place and time. We created Pushkin Children’s Books to share these tales from different languages and cultures with younger readers, and to open the door to the wide, colourful worlds these stories offer. The books in 2015 come from all corners of the world: from the Netherlands and Japan to Brazil and Russia, they have thrilled and delighted millions of children (and their parents) across four continents and more than seven decades. We’re particularly excited to be publishing The Secrets of the Wild Wood, the long-awaited sequel to the bestselling The Letter for the King, as well as From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, an American classic back at last in the UK. Along with Dot and Anton, another book by the formidable Erich Kästner, and stories about penguins, cats, rabbits and whales, this list reflects the very best stories from around the world, for our most discerning readers of all: children. THE SNOW QUEEN HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, ILLUSTRATED BY LUCIE ARNOUX A fresh new translation of one of the world’s best and most inspiring fairy tales When Kay is cursed by a magic mirror, he can no longer perceive goodness in anything – not his best friend Gerda, nor the roses in the garden. One wintery evening, he is kidnapped by the wicked Snow Queen and swept away to live for ever in her kingdom of ice. Gerda must travel through inhospitable and frozen lands, sustained only by the kindness of strangers, in order to find her beloved friend. And when she gets there, how will she melt the ice in his heart? Nearly two centuries after its first publication, The Snow Queen endures as a tale of love and loss, good and evil, and loyalty in the face of great hardships. HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805-1875) is one of the best-loved tellers of fairy tales. He was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a shoemaker. Despite the poverty of his early life he became a short-story writer, novelist and playwright. He is best known for his fairy tales, which were published between 1835 and 1872, and include ‘The Red Shoes’, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’, ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘The Ugly Duckling’. Strange rumours circulate about the Wild Wood: tales of robbers and lost cities, of dangerous knights and mysterious Men in Green ... and now Sir Ristridin, last seen in that impenetrable forest, has disappeared. Tiuri, now a young Knight with a White Shield, sets out with Piak and Marius to uncover the Wild Wood’s secrets, only to find himself caught up in a terrible plan to seize King Unauwen’s throne – a plan destined to end in a fierce battle between Good and Evil, in which no-one can remain impartial. Ever willing to risk all perils to fight for what is right and true, Tiuri gathers his old friends and sets off to warn King Unauwen – before it is too late. 4 TONKE DRAGT was born in 1930 in Indonesia. When she was twelve, she was imprisoned in a Japanese camp during the war, where she wrote her first book using begged and borrowed paper. After the war, she and her family moved to the Netherlands, where she became an art teacher. In 1962 she published her most famous story, The Letter for the King, which won the Children’s Book of the Year Award and has been translated into sixteen languages. Dragt was awarded the State Prize for Youth Literature in 1976 and was knighted in 2001. Her best friend is Anton, who lives in a little apartment and looks after his mother. They share a secret – every night, when their parents think they are asleep, they sell matches and shoelaces on the streets of Berlin with Dot’s grumpy governess. But why? The answers involve a villain called ‘Robert the Devil’, a club-wielding maid, a wobbly tooth, a pair of silver shoes and a policeman dancing the tango, as Dot and Anton get into all sorts of scrapes and even solve a crime in this delightful, touching and hilarious adventure story. 6 ‘Walter Trier’s deceptively innocent drawings are as classic as Kästner’s words; I never tire of them’ Quentin Blake Also published by Pushkin Children’s: The Parent Trap The Flying Classroom Translated by: Anthea Bell FORMAT: Flapped Paperback PRICE: £7.99 ISBN: 9781782690573 PUBLICATION: April 2015 DIMENSIONS: 200 x 148mm EXTENT: 144pp TERRITORY: World English READING AGE: 9+ years PUSHKIN CHILDREN’S 2015 ERICH KÄSTNER began his career as a journalist and, later, a freelance theatre critic. In 1929 he published his first book for children, Emil and the Detectives, which has since been translated into 60 languages and sold millions of copies around the world. He then went on to publish Dot and Anton in 1931 and The Flying Classroom in 1933. After the Nazis took power in Germany, Kästner’s books – thinly veiled critiques of society’s fall to fascism – were denounced and burnt. He faced repeated arrest and interrogation by the Gestapo, resulting in his blacklisting and exclusion from the writers’ guild. He won many awards, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1960. One of the best loved and most read children’s authors around the world, Kästner died in Munich in 1974. PUSHKIN CHILDREN’S 2015 WALTER TRIER was introduced to Kästner in Berlin in 1927. He had begun his career drawing cartoons for the Berliner Illustrated and contributing to the satirical weekly Simplicissimus. During the 1920s he ridiculed Hitler and the Nazi Party in a series of cartoons, and continued to do so until 1933, despite great personal risk and threats made against him. In 1936 he was forced to flee to London, where he produced anti-Nazi leaflets and political propaganda drawings. He died in 1951 in Ontario, Canada. 7 FUZZ MCFLOPS EVA FURNARI, ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR A brilliant bunny author finds a cure for the blues Fuzz McFlops is one of the most famous rabbit-writers in the land, but ever since his classmates teased him about his lopsided ears at school he’s led a lonely life, writing sad stories such as The Withered Carrot. Now he’s started receiving some scandalous, outrageous and rather eyecatching letters from one of his fans. Who is she? And why does Fuzz’s funny, tooshort ear start twitching every time he replies to her shocking notes? As their correspondence continues, Fuzz McFlops begins to wonder where this tale is heading, and whether he might not discover a happy ending for once, after all ... EVA FURNARI was born in Rome in 1948, but her family moved to Brazil when she was 2 years old. She started out as a writer in 1980 and has since published more than 60 books for children. She has won numerous awards throughout her long career. Fuzz McFlops sold 200,000 copies in Brazil, and is the first of Eva’s books to be translated into English. KONIGSBURG, ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR The million-selling classic novel—finally available again in the UK! New York City girl Claudia, a mere month shy of being a twelve-year-old, has resolved to run away from home with her younger brother, Jamie. She knows that she could never pull off the classic spurof-the-moment departure without a destination (inevitably involving having to eat outside with the insects, and cupcakes melting in the sun); so she plans everything to perfection, including their destination: the grand, elegant, beautiful, all-encompassing Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, no sooner have Claudia and Jamie settled into their new home, than they are caught up in the mystery of an angel statue bought by the museum for the bargain price of $225. Is it in fact an as yet undiscovered work by Michelangelo, worth millions? Claudia is determined to find out, and her quest leads her to the 12 remarkable, secretive Mrs. Frankweiler, who sold the statue to the museum – and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.
