Local Children’s’ Organization to Receive Advocate for Youth Award
Rhinebeck, NY – Ramapo for Children will receive the Ben Appelbaum Advocate for Youth Award at
SCOPE’s Annual Benefit Dinner on Thursday, April 16 at The Conrad Hotel in New York City. With over
450 camp and business leaders in attendance, the evening is dedicated to raising funds for SCOPE’s
summer camp scholarship program. SCOPE (Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education) is an
independent, nonprofit organization committed to providing camp and college scholarships to lowincome, inner-city children.
This prestigious award recognizes an individual or organization that demonstrates a strong commitment
to improving the lives of children. Past recipients include The Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, The
Heckscher Foundation for Children, Chancellor Rudy Crew, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christopher
Reeve, HELP USA, and Focus for a Future.
The award, presented annually at the SCOPE Benefit Dinner, is named in memory of Ben Appelbaum, a
camp owner, director, and leader in the camp industry. Ben was dedicated to strengthening camps and
to raising awareness of SCOPE and its mission to serve underprivileged children. After his untimely
passing in 1996, SCOPE created the award to acknowledge his leadership and commitment to improving
the lives of children in need through the summer camp experience.
Since 1991, SCOPE has provided over 25,000 deserving children with the benefits of summer camp and
has been privileged to be a strong supporter of Camp Ramapo in Rhinebeck, New York. Adam Weiss,
CEO of Ramapo for Children says, “A goal of summer camps across the country is to create successful
communities. Ramapo is proudly committed to creating communities, both at our campsite and beyond,
where the widest range of children, youth, and adults can all experience success.”
Michele Friedman, Executive Director of SCOPE adds, “Ramapo for Children exemplifies the values that
Ben Appelbaum espoused, and we are proud to honor them with the award. Both organizations believe
that summer camp is a partner in the overall education of children and a share a common mission to
provide children and families the edge to succeed in life by opening doors to opportunity.”
