Top U.S. & Ancient Coin Picks 1898-O Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS-67– Blast white Morgan Dollar from the New Orleans mint and without a doubt one of the highest graded examples known today. Over 4.4 million were issued but PCGS and NGC have only certified 383 coins in MS-67 with one finer, a lone MS-68. For the money, we love high-end Morgan Dollars like this, particularly when so few are known finer. Only one available for $2,368. 1889 Carson City $1 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC Extremely Fine 40– The 1889 Carson City Morgan Dollar is the toughest Carson City Morgan Dollar to obtain in any condition as it had a remarkably low mintage of only 350,000– a low number for a Morgan Dollar issue. The present example is evenly worn with attractive, dark toning throughout. A very nice coin for the grade and a price point that is affordable to many. Only one for $4,160. 1841 $10 Liberty NGC Almost Uncirculated 58 Bass – This coin is pedigreed from the Harry W. Bass collection that was sold in the late 90s. It’s only the third Liberty head $10 struck and just 63,131 were made. Today between PCGS and NGC combined, around 327 are known in all grades. In AU-58, PCGS has slabbed only 8 with 6 finer and NGC has holdered 16 with 15 finer, placing it in the top 13% known. The Bass pedigree adds a lot of allure to it, as well. Only one for $5,450. 1844-O $5 Liberty PCGS Mint State 63 – A very high end and early-dated New Orleans mint half-eagle from a mintage of 364,600. The overall look is wonderful with bright, flashy fields and superb luster. Under a thousand are known in all grades combined and this is one of 20 in MS-63 with only 7 known finer. It’s very rare to encounter early branch mint gold in such a high state of preservation. Only one for $14,990. June 2015 Ancient Coin Showcase Find below a list of some of our favorite inventory selections Lydian Silver Half-Stater NGC Choice Very Fine Star – Struck by King Croesus of Lydia, the obverse depicts the lion and bull confronting each other. The lion is thought to represent strength and the bull is thought to represent fertility. The reverse has an incuse punch that occurred when the coin was struck. It is very difficult to acquire these coins with a high level of eye appeal and even though this coin saw circulation so long ago, the details are fully intact and beautiful. Highly recommended and just a great coin for $2,816. Attica Athens Owl Silver Tetradrachm NGC Choice Almost Uncirculated Fine Style – This is an extremely attractive ancient silver coin issued by Athens nearly 2,500 years ago. This is an older issue of these Athenian Owls, much rarer than the newer issues struck closer to 400 B.C. The obverse shows Athena, the goddess of Wisdom, while the reverse shows the Owl, the totem bird of Athens. This particular coin is very well centered and struck and offers a lot of bang for the buck. Only one for $3,350. Nero Gold Aureus NGC Fine– Nero, who ruled Rome from 54-68 A.D., is notorious for being one of the most despised of all the Roman Emperors due to his vile mood and personal extravagances. Coins issued in his likeness are rarely encountered and the present example is quite desirable due to it’s relatively low price point. The obverse depicts a bust of Nero while the reverse shows the Roman God, Jupiter, seated on a throne. Only one available for $4,800. Marcus Aurelius Gold Aureus NGC Choice Extremely Fine Star (Fine Style)– Marcus Aurelius is one of the Five Good Emperors and is one of the most noteworthy and admired of all Roman Emperors. Gold coins issued in his likeness are extremely desirable today, particularly examples such as this one with remarkable detail and eye appeal. This is only the second example we’ve acquired in any condition and it is highly recommended. Only one available for $14,400.
