Creating new facilities to better patient care

Throughout Harefield Hospital’s centenary year an
exciting programme of new building work will be taking
place to expand and improve services for patients.
The development will include creating six additional critical care beds
in an expanded Intensive Therapy Unit, a new in-patient ward with a
20 bed capacity and a new Scanner Centre to centralise the hospital’s
MRI and CT scanning facilities.
In a year when we will be looking back on all that the hospital has
achieved over the last 100 years, it is fitting that we are also able
to look forward to the creation of vital new facilities - making a huge
difference to future generations of patients and maintaining Harefield’s
position as a world class centre for heart and lung disease treatment
and research.

New facilities to better patient care
From 2016, new facilities at Harefield Hospital will mean
patients will be able to benefit from:

Reduced waiting times for heart surgery and treatment
for thoracic malignancies

An expansion of the hospital’s transplant and artificial
heart programme

Extra capacity to deal with the 300+ emergency
admissions that the hospital receives each year

New scanning techniques and increased scanning
capabilities
Planning for the long term
Much of Harefield Hospital dates back to the 1930s, and while the
hospital is equipped with some of the most state-of-the-art technologies,
many of the buildings that house this equipment are not ideal for a 21st
Century specialist heart and lung hospital.
The new facilities will therefore fit into an evolving plan for the longer
term redevelopment of the site over the coming years.
