Brandt, Don Mitchell, Jerry W. Manweiler RBSP Data Workshop 15 May 2012 Fundamental Technologies, LLC 11 Instrument Operations RBSPICE Observations Only one primary mode of operation This mode produces the full complement of normal telemetry products continuously This mode covers the entire RBSP orbit No special operations during inner belt passage Burst Mode –RBSPICE does not have a burst mode. We could increase our time resolution by about a factor of 2 for brief intervals, should it become clear that it would be advantageous. At present, we are not convinced we’d have the counting statistics to justify that, and we do not have the telemetry allocation to allow it routinely. Instrument Configuration Controlled by ground command Queued on-board commands according to planned campaigns Parameters are changed infrequently, and typically only to optimize or correct instrument configuration. Instrument software loads are generated as needed but expected on an infrequent basis RBSP Data Workshop 15 May 2012 Fundamental Technologies, LLC 12 Detailed Data Flow Description General processing thru the “pipeline” for RBSPICE data: 1) Daily queries to MOC/EMFISIS for new or modified data products 2) Characterization of downloaded data products thru download process 3) Production of Level 1 thru Level 3 data products with option for Level 4 data products (scientifically identified criteria to be determined by RBSPICE science team, RBSP SWG or other instrument teams, or RBSP project scientists) 4) Publication of all data thru standard HTTP/FTP/SOAP protocols as ISTP compliant CDF, ASCII (CSV) flat files, XML packaged and SPASE XML described data fragments. RBSP Data Workshop 15 May 2012 Fundamental Technologies, LLC 19 RBSPICE mounting To Sun 160.0º 16.9º The RBSPICE sensor mounted at a 16.9° angle, such that its 160° FOV covers from beyond the anti-sunward spin axis to 16.9° off the sunward pointing spin axis. The sun moves back and forth, at times as much as 27° off the spin axis, so the RBSPICE FOV is blocked for an additional 12°. The (electron) detector behind this look direction becomes the “Witness” detector.
