A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SECONDARY AND SR. SECONDARY COURSES OF NIOS
(LEARNERS ARE ADVISED TO READ THE PROSPECTUS FOR COMPLETE DETAILS)
National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is a Teaching and examining authority. It is a national level Board,
like CBSE, functioning under the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. NIOS is ISO 9001:2008 Certified and
also the Largest Open schooling System in the World
Secondary and Sr. Secondary Courses of NIOS:
Secondary course is an integrated one year programme of Class-IX and Class-X. Those who possess an academic
standard of Class-VIII and above can join this course.
Sr.Secondary course is an integrated programme of Class-XI and Class-XII. This is a two year programme which
can be completed by two years after passing of Class-X under 10+2 Pattern. Those who have passed Class X from a
recognized board can join this course. Those who join this course immediately after passing Class-X will complete
this course within two academic years. However, those who have dropped their school education in the middle of +2
or after Class-X and lost one or more years will be allowed to complete this course within one academic year.
Equivalence: NIOS’s Secondary course is equivalent to Class-X of other Boards. Similarly, Sr. Secondary Course
is equivalent to Class-XII/+2.
Examinations: There are two provisions available for appearing in NIOS examinations.

Public Examinations: NIOS conduct Public examinations twice a year during March-May and SeptemberNovember. There will be examination centers in every district.
On Demand Examination (ODE): In addition to public examinations, NIOS conduct On Demand
Examination at the Regional Centers and NIOS’s Hq, NOIDA throughout the year except in April, May,
October and November. Theory examinations are held on every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays and
practical examinations on every Friday.
How to appear in the Examination: NIOS enroll learners under following Streams for above examinations and
allow up to 5 years time to complete the course.
( 1 ) For those who wanted to start Secondary/Sr. Secondary Course,
Admission under Stream-1. This entry is meant for those who wanted to start Secondary/Sr. Secondary Course, It
is essential for them to undergo NIOS’s teaching process in an academic session. There will be a public examination
conducted for them at the end of the academic session. They may or may not register for the 1st public examination.
Afterwards they may register and appear in ODE or public examination as per their requirement and convenience.
Students taken admission under Stream-1 will be given the following supports:
They will be attached to an Accredited Institution (AI) and will be provided Personal Contact Programme (PCP)- up
to 30 Sessions for Theory and up to 5 sessions for Practical. They will have to submit one Tutor Marked Assignment
(TMA) in each subject which will be evaluated and feedback given. They will be issued self instructional study
material by post.
Admission under Stream-1 is available throughout the year in two Blocks. Block-1, during 16th March to 15th
September for March - May public examination and Block-2, during 16th September to 15th March for SeptemberNovember public examination.
( 2 ) For those who have completed study at Class-X or +2 in any recognized board but missed their final
examination even after getting the Hall Ticket or failed in the final examination: They can appear in NIOS’s
Secondary/Sr. Secondary examination directly without undergoing NIOS’s teaching process. They will not be
insisted to complete an academic year in NIOS, as they already had completed the academic years under a
recognized board. The following provisions are available for them.
a) Direct registration under Stream-2 for public examination to be held in September-November will be
held during 1st May to 30th June every year. They may or may not appear in this examination. Afterwards
they may register and appear in ODE or public examination as per their requirement and convenience. They
are attached to an Accredited Institution, however not been given supports applicable to Stream-1.
b) Direct registration under Stream-3 for Secondary course and under Stream-4 for Sr. Secondary
Course for On Demand Examination (ODE) throughout the year. They are not eligible to appear in the
public examination. They are not attached to an Accredited Institution and also not given supports
applicable to Stream-1. ODE examinations are conducted in the following subjects only.
Secondary: Hindi (201), English (202), Sanskrit (209), Mathematics (211), Science & Technology (212),
Social Science (213), Economics 214), Business studies (215), Home Science (216), Word Processing
(219), Psychology (222), Indian Culture & Heritage (223) & Painting (225).
Sr. Secondary : Hindi (301), English (302), Sanskrit (309), Mathematics (311), Physics (312), Chemistry
(313), Biology (314), History (315), Geography (316), Political Sc.(317), Economics (318), Business
Studies (319), Accountancy (320), Home Science (321), Psychology (328) Sociology(331), Painting (332)
Environmental Science (333) and data entry Operations(336).

Through Stream-1 as above
Provision for Full Course and Choice of subjects.
Full Course: Candidate seeking a certification from NIOS should opt for a full course. Pass in minimum 5 subjects
with at least one language and 3 non-languages are mandatory for certification. One or two additional subjects,
language or non language as per the requirement can be taken. Subjects can be selected as per the preference of the
learner from the Table furnished below. Examination of Regional languages (Languages indicated with *marks in
the list) are held same day and at same time hence one cannot appear in more than one Regional Languages in one
chance. Those who wanted to study more than one Regional Languages will have to avail more chances.
(Learners may note the condition prescribed by Kerala Government: Secondary- two languages including
Malayalam and three subjects Science, Mathematics and Social Science/ Psychology. Sr. Secondary: Two
languages and three Optional subjects are applicable.).
Change of Subject: Within the period of 5 years, subjects can be got changed and also take additional subjects
within the permitted limit. Passed subject cannot be changed. Change/addition is not allowed for the 1 st Public
Examination. Registration for additional subject/change of subject is available during 1 st January to 15th April for
September-November examination and during 1st July to 15th October for March-May Examination.
Provision for Part Credit: Candidates, who are perusing Secondary/Sr. Secondary level study or who already
possess qualification at Secondary / Sr. Secondary/Higher level and wanted to study only few subjects, may study up
to 4 subjects under Part Credit System. Such Candidates are not entitled for certification. They will be issued a Mark
Statement only.
Transfer of Credit (TOC): Ex-Students of CBSE, CISCE, Kerala State Open School (KSOS) and some selected
boards listed in NIOS’s prospectus who have passed in at least one subject, but have not qualified in the
course are entitled to get the credit of two subjects they have passed from their board in Class-X/Class-XII/+2 in
final examination within past 5 years transferred to NIOS. In addition, credit of two subjects passed within past two
years from Kerala Board of Public Examination, Kerala Board of Hr. Secondary Education and 30 other Boards
which are members of COBSE are, also transferable, provided the result is available in their website or the student
get the certificate verified from the concerned Boards. Subjects offered by NIOS will only be considered for TOC
and should have passed with at least 33% of marks. Such students should submit their option at the time of
admission and surrender their original Mark statement from which the credit transfer is sought. KSOS students
should surrender their original Hall Tickets and KSOS’s identity card along with the Mark Statement.
Ex- NIOS Students are entitled TOC earned within past 10 years for up to 4 subjects.
Credit Accumulation; NIOS’s admissions are valid for 5 years. Students enrolled under Stream-1 and Stream-2 is
eligible for availing 9 chances of public examinations and any number of ODE. Students enrolled under Stream-3
and Stream-4 are not eligible to appear in the public examination, however, they are eligible to appear in any
number of ODE subject to a particular subject not more than once in a month. Students may take one or more
chances for completing the course. NIOS maintain the credit accumulated and issue Mark Statement with
accumulated credit each time.
Medium offered in Kochi Region: Secondary: English/Hindi/Urdu/Malayalam Sr. Secondary:
English/Hindi/Urdu (Students are free to attempt examination in any Indian Scheduled Language irrespective of the
medium chosen for study by them) For ODE, The Question Paper will be in English and Hindi Medium Only
irrespective of the medium of instruction chosen by the student.

Registration of ODE for a particular month will be commencing from 1 st
working day of corresponding previous month at 13.00 hrs. Registration is
possible only when seats are available. Vacant seats, due to cancellation of
candidature will be made available on 10th and 23rd of each month at 13.00 hrs.
There will be no registration in March, April, September and October as there
will not be ODE held during public examination in April, May, October and
November.
June to September, 2015
Theory papers of ODE is conducted on all Tuesdays, Wednesdays and on
Thursdays at the Regional Centres and NIOS Hq, NOIDA from 2.00 pm to 5.00
pm. Practical examinations of subjects for which theory papers are over in a in
a week will be held on Friday of the same week. Practical commences at
10.AM.
Every month for the exams held during the previous month. (Usually, Result of
ODE held in each fortnight comes out within 30-45 days of fortnight end.)
