WELCOME TO OUR SUMMER
EVENTS FOR 2015
One of the highlights of our season is Schubert’s grand statement for
orchestra, the ‘Great’ Symphony, performed by the RCM Classical Orchestra
conducted by Sir Roger Norrington. The programme opens with one of Haydn’s
most charming works, the symphony ‘La Reine’, said to be the favourite of
Marie Antoinette.
We also celebrate anniversaries of Scandinavian symphonists Jean Sibelius
and Carl Nielsen, the former with his Fifth Symphony of which he wrote ‘I
wished to give my symphony another – more human – form. More down-toearth, more vivid.’ Nicholas Collon conducts the RCM Symphony Orchestra
in a programme which also includes music by Stravinsky, Debussy and RCM
composer Arne Gieshoff.
We showcase more music from northern parts in our Chamber Essentials
series, with music by celebrated Russian composers, including Rachmaninov,
Prokofiev and Shostakovich, alongside that of Sergey Taneyev in the centenary
year of his death. The String Quartet Collective also returns, with classic
works by Janácˇek and Dvorˇák.
Exploring the Archives is our ongoing series bringing to life some of the
important holdings in the extensive RCM collections, and as commemorations
of the Great War continue, we investigate the music and poetry of RCM
alumnus Ivor Gurney.
A grand celebration of the best of British Baroque includes Handel’s
rousing Zadok the Priest and music by Purcell and Blow performed
by the RCM Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir. At the other
end of the spectrum the RCM New Perspectives ensemble pays
tribute to the American composer Elliott Carter, who died in
2012 aged 103.
A showcase for Composition for Screen with live music to
film, hidden treasures in Super String Sunday, the RCM
Festival of Percussion, RCM stars at Wigmore Hall and
Cadogan Hall, and our wind, saxophone and brass ensembles
all give a variety of opportunities to hear our performers in the
widest range of music. We bring the year to a joyous conclusion
with Benjamin Britten’s homely and comic look at village life with
his opera Albert Herring.

RCM Museum of Music
In this special exhibition, the RCM Museum of Music celebrates the
centenary of the Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, one of the world’s most
significant collections of work by artists of Jewish descent.
Recently discovered archival material and selected artworks will tell the
unique story of how the Ben Uri Art Gallery has supported music, particularly
émigré and emerging musicians, throughout the 20th century. The exhibition
accompanies Art Identity Migration: 100 years of Ben Uri in London
1915-2015 taking place in the Inigo Rooms, Somerset House East Wing,
in association with the Cultural Institute at King’s College London,
from July to December 2015.

Drawing on the pioneering spirit of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde
Park, Great Exhibitionists is the RCM’s ground-breaking concert series
devised and presented by RCM students.
This innovative and cross-disciplinary Great Exhibitionists event tells
the story of a girl trapped in a mundane existence who escapes into
an alternate cyber-world in her dreams. Visual poetry and specifically
composed new music and choreography will combine with state-of-the-art
digital design and projection technology to explore the original narrative
by award-winning writer Peter Cox.
Experimenting with interactive and reactive creative technology systems,
this theatrical show promises to push the boundaries of stagecraft,
scenography and orchestral performance to create an awe-inspiring and
immersive experience for the audience.
This event is part of Network Performing Arts Production Workshop, which
is being hosted by the RCM from 4 to 6 May.

great songwriters with a programme that includes pieces Gurney wrote
in the trenches in France such as In Flanders, Severn Meadows and
By a Bierside, as well as The Western Playland song cycle, Ha’nacker
Mill and Desire in Spring. It will also feature Erlebach’s settings of
Gurney’s poetry.
The manuscripts of many of tonight’s featured works are held in the
RCM Library, and a number of them will be on display in the Britten

We’re delighted to welcome back world-renowned conductor and RCM
alumnus Sir Roger Norrington to direct the RCM Classical Orchestra in
this symphonic programme. The highlight of the evening is Schubert’s final
and majestic symphony, often considered the composer’s finest piece
for orchestra.
In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth, the concert also
features the composer’s charming symphonic poem, based on the tale of
the maiden from Pohjola. And to open, one of Marie Antoniette’s favourite
pieces – Haydn’s Symphony no 85, dubbed ‘La Reine’.

Super String Sunday Into the Spotlight

The Royal College of Music’s annual Super String Sunday returns
offering the opportunity to see some of the world’s brightest young
string stars in action.
This year we shine a spotlight on some of string music’s
hidden gems in five hours of diverse performances in the
wonderful surroundings of the RCM’s Amaryllis Fleming
Concert Hall.
Featured works will include the effervescent Concerto
for Double String Orchestra by RCM alumnus Sir Michael
Tippett and Igor Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String
Quartet. Rounding off the day will be several different
versions of Paganini’s devilish 24th Caprice – renowned
as one of the most impressively virtuosic works ever
written for solo violin.
The event is free, and no ticket is required. Our doors will
be open all day, so drop in for ten minutes or stay for hours!

With a career spanning more than 75 years, Elliott Carter was hailed as ‘one
of America’s most distinguished creative artists in any field’ by his friend Aaron
Copland. RCM New Perspectives celebrates the work of this great composer
with his Asko Concerto, Triple Duo, Mosaic and his first work for solo
percussion ensemble, Tintinnabulation. The concert also includes the
world premieres of new works by RCM composers Javier Marti Aranda
and Lewis Murphy.

The Ruisi Quartet is fast securing a reputation as an ensemble of

enigmatic Three Pieces for string quartet. The concert is framed with
quartets by Haydn and Schubert.
The Ruisi Quartet is the first ensemble on the RCM’s Artist Diploma
programme, kindly supported by a legacy from the late Albert and

Since making his successful debut at the BBC Proms in 2010, Nicholas
Collon has forged a commanding career as Principal Conductor and Artistic
Director of the Aurora Orchestra. Tonight he conducts an explosive concert
that includes two RCM Concerto Competition winners: saxophonist Philip
Attard and rising star composer Arne Gieshoff. The evening culminates
in Sibelius’ epic Symphony no 5, a work which was originally composed
to celebrate his 50th birthday, so it is fitting that the RCM Symphony
Orchestra performs it tonight, in this, the 150th anniversary year of the
composer’s birth.

The RCM International Opera School once again offers up an
entertaining and tuneful comic opera for the summer season.
RCM alumnus Benjamin Britten’s tale of Albert Herring
portrays the loss of innocence as Albert, the
greengrocer’s shy and virtuous son, is chosen as
the local May King and finds himself on a journey
of discovery.
To direct this production, we are delighted to
announce the return of Liam Steel, director of
the hugely successful 2010 production of
Orpheus in the Underworld. Our very own
vocal professor Janis Kelly will appear in
the role of Lady Billows alongside star
singers from the RCM.

Transport
Access
By Tube The nearest underground station is South
Kensington, which is about 10 minutes’ walk from
the RCM. South Kensington is on the District, Circle
and Piccadilly lines. Gloucester Road and High
Street Kensington stations are both approximately
15 minutes’ walk from the RCM.
The Royal College of Music has easy access to most
areas and is fully accessible via lifts and ramps.
Guide and companion dogs may be taken anywhere
on site. The main entrance to the RCM has eight
steps up from the pavement and two inside the
main doors.
By Rail The nearest mainline railway stations are
Paddington and Victoria.
By Bus Buses 9, 10, 52 and 452 pass the Royal
Albert Hall, whilst 9a runs from Palace Gate and 70
along Queen’s Gate. The number 360 stops very
close to the RCM on Prince Consort Road. Many
other services run to South Kensington, Kensington
High Street or Knightsbridge from surrounding areas.
By Road There is metered parking on Prince Consort
Road and the surrounding area. It costs £3 per
hour for a maximum of three hours and is free
after 6.30pm and on Sundays. There are a limited
number of disabled parking spaces and designated
motorbike bays in the surrounding area.
Food and Drink
Lunch and Snacks The RCM Restaurant offers a
great range of hot and cold snacks and beverages
each weekday between 9.00am and 4.00pm as well
as delicious full lunch options between 12.00pm
and 2.00pm.
Evening Performance Drinks and Light Snacks
The RCM offers a range of pre-performance and
interval refreshments, and a selection of light
snacks for those attending evening events in the
Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Britten
Theatre. These are served between 6.00pm and
9.00pm (5.00pm for early evening performances) in
the Britten Theatre Bar or the RCM Foyer Bar.
Photography and Recordings
Photographs may be taken during the applause at
the end of a work. Photography before and during
a performance is forbidden. Private sound or
video recordings of RCM concerts and recitals are
prohibited without prior written permission from the
RCM and the agreement of all performers.
Your co-operation is appreciated.
The East Entrance, 20 metres to the left of the main
entrance, is solely for the use of patrons with limited
mobility and is opened by contacting reception staff
via intercom. The main entrance to the Amaryllis
Fleming Concert Hall contains 10 steps. A step-free
entrance is available.
The main entrance to the Britten Theatre
contains 33 steps. An alternative step-free
entrance is available for all patrons. There are
spaces for wheelchair users and seats for their
companions in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall
and Britten Theatre.
