Daniel LaPoint Jr. dug up a set of massive
bones in his neighbor’s backyard in Bellevue
Township. The bones were examined and are
from a mastodon, a distant relative of the
elephant.
A few of the bones are still in Daniel’s
possession and he is visiting us. Join the
Marshall Recreation Department for this unique
opportunity to touch the fossils and learn more
about mastodons!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW










Grade indicates participants’ grade during the 14/15 school year.
Playground hours-10 am-4 pm; Mon-Fri.
Drop-off/pick-up at Hughes.
Dress appropriately for indoor and outdoor play. Sturdy shoes
recommended.
Lunch is provided each day. Hughes is designated as an open meal
site through the USDA and MDE programs.
The 10-week calendar of activities, participant handbook and trip
information available in May.
Program staff will not be on-site during the field trips.

YOUTH BASEBALL/SOFTBALL
Machine Pitch Youth Baseball and Girls Softball
Begins the week of May 18

Pitching machines will be used in all of our youth
baseball and softball leagues!
By controlling the pitch, there is more action at the plate and in
the field. Fear of being hit by a pitched ball is also diminished.
Controlled pitches helps to make the game safer and improve
the playing confidence and ability of all participants.
Age-appropriate pitching speed will be used for each level
of play.
CHOOSE YOUR LEAGUE
Rookie League - 1st-3rd Grade: This league offers
players a great opportunity for learning fundamentals. Games
are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Minor League – 3rd-5th Grade: The main purpose of
this league is for players to continue to learn game skills and
play baseball. Games are played on Monday and Wednesday
evenings.
Major League – 5th-8th Grade: This is the final step in
our baseball program. This league offers players an opportunity
to refine skills and game strategy. Games are played on
Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Girl’s Softball – 1st-8th Grade: Softball leagues will be
determined by the number of registered players and grade
range. Games on Tuesday and Thursday.
* Level I: The league focuses on the fundamentals of
girls softball.
* Level II: The league will assist players in continuing to
learn what it takes to succeed in softball by
refining skills and game strategy.
GENERAL INFORMATION
 Grade is participants’ grade during the 14/15 school year.
 Concussion Form must be completed and returned to the
Rec Department PRIOR to play.
 No player requests.
 All games are played at the Marshall Athletic Fields.
 Rain-outs are decided at 4:30 pm on game day. After 5:00

USTA Quick Start Tennis Lessons
1st-6th Grade ~ 2 Sessions Available
The Quick Start Tennis format designed by the USTA has
been implemented to give younger kids more opportunity
to play and succeed. Ball type, racquet size, and court size
are adjusted to make it easier to rally. Players need bring
their own racquet, a can of balls and plenty of water. Meet
at the MHS tennis courts Monday-Thursday (Friday is set
aside for rain make-up). Session size is limited.

Marshall (PSB, behind the Power Plant)
The Recreation Department is excited to bring this outdoor
walk-through theatrical production of magic, spectacle and
light this spring to the areas adjacent to the Marshall
Riverwalk. This family-oriented, original script is written and
will be directed by Brodie H. Brockie.
The story follows a small child who reports meeting fairies in
the forest, no one believes the story except for Philbert
Abernathy III, an elderly eccentric who swears he had a
similar experience when he was just a boy. Participants will
be invited to join Philbert and the child as they venture into
the forest, seeking to prove the existence of magical
creatures.

Oakridge Cemetery Walking Tour PART I
Thursday, June 11 at 7:00 pm Learn of the State's first
Congressman, founders of the Michigan School system and
Union Heroes of the Civil War and other American battles. Meet
at the Oakridge Cemetery Chapel.
Historic Heritage Route Walking Tour
Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 pm Marshall’s Michigan Ave from
East Dr to Cherry St is designated as a Michigan Historic Heritage Route. Meet at Town Hall.
Oakridge Cemetery Walking Tour PART II
Thursday, Aug 13 at 6:30 pm Oakridge Cemetery was first
used in 1839 (then called Marshall Cemetery) and is one of the
oldest operating cemeteries in Michigan. Meet at the Oakridge
Cemetery Chapel.
Note: All tours are free of charge and led by local
historian Susan Collins.
