Renewable Energy and Advances in Technology
Session summary: In this session we will be hearing about some of the latest
projects and/or advancements that have an impact on the WTE arena. We will
also learn more about efforts that have been undertaken in Florida to develop a
WTE bottom ash recycling program, which has resulted in a county specific
approval for the reuse of bottom ash, and an avenue to count ash for recycling
credits instead of landfilling or monofilling. This standing approval is the first of its
kind in the United States.

Environmental Initiative Programs and Tour(s)
Overview: Take an opportunity to hear talks on sustainable programs as well as attend an environmental
tour from where you play to where you stay. *Pre-Registration required.
Tour Options:
1. Volusia County Landfill: The Tomoka Farms Road Landfill is an integrated solid waste management
facility. Volusia County*s Solid Waste Division is operated as an enterprise fund in which users pay for
the operation of disposal activities. It receives solid waste generated in Volusia County and some from
neighboring Flagler County. This 3,400-acre landfill area has a life expectancy to 2052. Participants will
observe Class I and Class III disposal operations, visit the household hazardous waste disposal/recycling
area, and see the on-site leachate treatment plant. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable
clothes and must wear closed-toed shoes. – *Free

The Shores Resort and Spa Beach Clean-up: Join the resort’s Green Team for Beach Clean Up. A group of
associates will join participants from Florida Recycle Today and will split into two teams. Each team will
clean the beach from the resort out one half (1/2) mile in opposite directions. Along the way there will
be prizes “hidden” along the way including complimentary cocktails, appetizers and spa products. At the
end there will be a raffle drawing for the team who collected the most recyclable waste (by weight) will
receive a gift certificate for a massage in the resort’s Indulge Spa and more! – *Free
