“Storm Surge”
Storm Surge Can Be Deadly!
Storm Surge Preparedness
A storm surge is a rise above the normal water level
along a shore that accompanies a tropical cyclone as it
comes ashore.
Know Your Maps, Know Your Zone!
• Storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and
property from a hurricane. It poses a significant threat for
drowning.
• Find out today, well before a hurricane ever approaches,
if you live in a storm surge evacuation zone.
• Tropical storms, major hurricanes, and post-tropical
cyclones can all cause life-threatening storm surge.
Turn Around, Don’t Drown. If you come upon flowing
water that is above your ankles, you should stop, turn
around, and go another way. Turn and drive around if you
come upon a flooded road.
Wait to Return. Evacuations may last for days or even
weeks. These measures are meant to keep you safe –
always wait for the “all clear” from officials before returning
home.

@RedCross
5/12/2015
• You do not have to live in a floodplain to experience
storm surge from a hurricane or other storm.
• Click here for more information.
Have an emergency plan and contact. Practice your
evacuation route & ask someone out of state to be a
“family contact.”
Get Flood Insurance. Because standard homeowners
insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have
protection in place. For more information, visit
FloodSmart.gov.
Download the Red Cross Emergency App! Access
information on what to do before, during and after a flood or
hurricane. Click here for more information.
