Sun 28 Jun
Rome
Today at leisure.
This afternoon, enjoy a performance of Puccini’s Tosca at the
Costanzi Theatre, the main home of the Rome Opera, followed by
dinner at a local restaurant.
Set in Rome itself, this new production of Tosca by Alessandro Talevi
(director) and Adolf Hohenstein (sets) is based on the original
drawings for the opera’s premiere at the Rome Opera in 1900.
Conducted by Donato Renzetti, the role of Floria Tosca will be
performed by the Russian dramatic coloratura soprano Tatiana Serjan,
with Alfred Kim as Cavaradossi and Claudio Sgura as Scarpia. B D
Founded in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti
(1911–2007) the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival
of the Two Worlds) features a vast array of concerts,
opera, dance, drama and visual arts for three weeks in
June-July each year. The small Umbrian town of Spoleto
was chosen by Menotti as the venue for an arts festival
because of its two indoor theatres, a Roman theatre,
additional performance spaces and its proximity to Rome.
The ‘Two Worlds’ in the name of the festival comes
from Menotti’s intention to have the worlds of American
and European culture facing each other in his event;
from 1977 until the early 1990’s, the Spoleto Festival was
‘twinned’ with the Spoleto Festival USA held annually in
May/June in Charleston, South Carolina. Under Menotti’s
direction in 1986, a third instalment in the Spoleto Festival
series was held in Melbourne, Australia (since 1990 the
Melbourne International Arts Festival). Now, post-Menotti
and in its 6th decade, the Spoleto Festival remains one
of Italy’s most important cultural events.

Angela Hewitt is a phenomenal artist. In 2005 she completed
her eleven-year project to record all the major keyboard works
of Bach, which has been described as “one of the record glories
of our age” (The Sunday Times). Angela has been hailed as
“the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time” (The Guardian).
In July 2005, Angela Hewitt launched her own Trasimeno
Music Festival in the heart of Umbria near Perugia. Now an
annual event in its 11th year, the Festival draws an international
audience to the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione, on
the shores of Lake Trasimeno, and other gracious venues. Seven
