VALLEY ROAD SCHOOL HONORS VOLUNTEER EMERGENCY SQUAD
Students and staff at Valley Road School in
Clark learned a lesson in caring for the
community and humility when they raised
money for the Clark Volunteer Emergency
Squad in April. In order to show their
appreciation for these unselfish members of the
community students and staff were encouraged
to put hats on in support. They came to school
donning interesting hats and decorative shows of
recognition. Mrs. Haney successfully put
together the fourth annual event of its kind.
The Clark Volunteer Emergency Squad is
available at all times of the day and all days of
the week to help anyone in need who may
require it. The school raised funds to help
maintain this organization and allow it to
continue doing the great things it already does.
The squad is almost completely funded by
donations. If you would like to further assist in (above) Mr. Bryan Lowe, Mrs. Janeen Allmendinger, Captain Michael
their operations, they are located at 875 Raritan Hajkowski, and Mr. Joseph Beltramba pose with students as Sean Mirek
and Juliana Rama present the check of the funds raised.
Road and all support is appreciated.

made a generational jump and is catching fire
among people of all ages. Pickleball is a
combination of tennis, badminton and ping

type ball. Doubles is played most often.
Clark Recreation Director, Ralph Bernardo is
always looking for new programs and classes to
offer our residents and get people off the couch.
He thought this was a great fun, exciting sport,
not only for seniors but any age. A clinic was
held at Clark Recreation on April 14th to
introduce the sport. Most people have never
heard about Pickleball unless you go down south
in which case there is a waiting line to use a
court. A group of adults participated in the free
session and was taught and instructed by
seasoned Pickleball player Candy Pantano and a

HEHNLY STUDENTS JOIN TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON EARTH DAY
The students of Frank K. Hehnly School came out in large numbers to
celebrate Earth Day by choosing to walk to school, instead of riding in a
car. Students and teachers met at various locations in the Hehnly School
neighborhood and walked to school to show their concern for the Earth.
“Each year, the number of students that participate in our Earth Day
walk grows and grows,” explained Mrs. Begin, Hehnly School Principal.
“It is vital to begin teaching children at an early age about the importance
of protecting the Earth and that it is a job that we all need to do together.”
In addition to the walk, Hehnly School held a variety of classroom
events and activities throughout the day to honor this special day.

HEHNLY STUDENTS
DIVE INTO READING
In Mrs. Guarino’s third grade class, students
got to “dive into” a book about sea creatures in
their recent guided reading group. Students read
an information text about various sea creatures
and then used the information they learned to
compare and contrast various aspects of the
creatures. Students then extended their learning
by creating Venn diagrams to further outline the
similarities and differences.
“In our classroom, our guided reading groups
offer students the opportunity to work in small
groups on their own reading level. These small
groups allow for a great deal of interaction
between the students and enable me as their
teacher, to focus in on various strategies to
improve fluency and comprehension,” explained
Ms. Guarino.
(above) The annual Blue and Gold Banquet was held at the Gran Centurians in Clark, on Sunday
March 1st. We had the pleasure of welcoming a total of eleven Tiger Scouts into the Pack while
saying a joyous yet tearful goodbye to nine Webelos II Cub Scouts as they continue their journey
on to Boy Scouts. Cub Master Scott McCabe was present performing the ceremony and Scout
Master Ted McKeown was present and awaited each Webelos II as they officially crossed the
bridge, (bridged over), to Boy Scout Troop 145 of Clark. The Blue and Gold Banquet is a
celebration of the anniversary of Cub Scouting and is named after the symbolic colors of Cub
Scouting. For more information on joining cub scouts please visit www.cubpack145.info.

CLARK STUDENTS CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
Students in Miss Bartolomeo’s class, at Carl
H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark, celebrated
Earth Day. In preparation for Earth Day, the
students learned about the history of the holiday
and ways they could help the Earth.
To start off the day, the class planted flowers
around the flag pole in front of the school. With

the help of a generous donation by
Schieferstein’s Farm on Madison Hill Road, in
Clark, the class planted blue, purple, and yellow
pansies.
Later that day, the students created hand
crafted recycling bins for the school. The
students took boxes and decorated them using
construction paper, crayons, colored pencils,
stencils, stickers, and recycling symbols. The
class was happy about their contributions to
their planet on Earth Day.

C.A.L.C. AUTISM AWARENESS
Members of the Crusader Athletic Leadership
Council recently participated in the Clark
School District’s Autism Awareness Day at the
Clark Pre-School. Autism is one of a group of
serious developmental problems called autism
spectrum disorders that appear in early
childhood, usually before age three. Though
symptoms and severity vary, all autism spectrum
disorders affect a child's ability to communicate
and interact with others. The number of children
diagnosed with autism appears to be rising. It's
not clear whether this is due to better detection
and reporting of autism or a real increase in the
number of cases or both. While there is no cure
for autism, intensive, early treatment can make a
big difference in the lives of many children with
the disorder.
C.A.L.C. members participated in numerous
events throughout the occasion that not only
were enjoyable for all of the children, but also
raised awareness for autism. In addition, the
teachers had a multitude of activities relating to
autism that incorporated C.A.L.C. members and
pre-school students alike. Miss Lillis, Clark Pre-

well as the community. The show was a
resounding success with lots of laughs and a
captivated audience.
The success of the show was made possible
largely because of the great effort of the
students. Students did a great job at multitasking and balancing responsibilities. Not only
were the participants involved in the
memorization of lines, but they also helped to
design and make the set. “It was great to see
students of all different personalities and
interests shine through their collaboration and
involvement in this event,” Lowe said.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
TURN INTO SCIENTISTS
Students in Miss Bartolomeo’s class at Carl
H. Kumpf Middle School, in Clark, are learning
about the human body. The students focued
specifically on the circulatory system recently.
With the help of Mrs. Arwa Lokhandwala, the
students did an experiment to learn about the
different blood types. The students learned that
there was blood type A, blood type B, blood type
AB, and blood type O.
In the experiment, the students used acrylic
paint to represent blood type A, vinegar for
blood type B, and water for blood type O. The
acrylic paint and vinegar were mixed to make
the combination for blood type AB. The students
learned what happened when you mixed two
blood types together. The students also used
glitter to represent red blood cells in the body,
and mineral oil to represent plasma.
When the students completed the experiment,
they recorded their observations on their lab
reports. Then, the students had to opportunity to
look at different blood cells under microscopes.
The students had a wonderful time being
scientists for the day!

THE NJ DEVIL VISITS VALLEY ROAD SCHOOL
Students in Ms. Grigoli’s Kindergarten class
received a visit from the NJ Devil’s hockey
mascot as part of the Stick with It: Achievement
in Academics program. This program
encourages students to read each day, seven days
a week. Students are asked to have their parents
help them record their minutes on their reading
log. The students in Ms. Grigoli’s class won a
pizza party and a visit with the NJ Devil for the
amount of minutes logged on their reading logs.
The students were very proud of their reading
log achievements and were even more excited to
find out the class had won.
The NJ Devil arrived with pizza, water, and
juice for the class. He interacted with the
students, made them laugh, and got them excited
about reading. Each student was given a gift bag
which included an Achievement in Academics
shirt. The NJ Devil took the time to personally
sign each child’s shirt individually. He also had
some time to have a dance party with the class to
a few of their favorite songs. The NJ Devil
posed for pictures and the class received a
Congratulations banner to hang in their
classroom. The NJ Devil’s visit was a great
motivator and reward for the students reading
achievements.

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT FIRE SAFETY
Kathryn Jones, teacher at Carl H. Kumpf
Middle School and Arthur L. Johnson High
School taught a lesson on fire safety with her life
skills class. Her students had the exciting
opportunity of meeting a special guest,
“Firefighter Brian.” He has been a volunteer
fireman for the past 9 years and provided the
students with insight as to what to do in case of
an emergency. The students were excited to ask
him questions about what he does on a daily
basis and why he chose to become a fireman.
Each student had at least one question ready to
ask Firefighter Brian and he provided answers to
the best of our understanding. He explained the
difficulties firemen face. Firefighter Brian
enforced the importance of having a safety plan
in place in case the students are ever in a scary
situation such as a house fire. Each student
expressed two ways they could get out of their
home in case one exit was blocked by fire.
Students had to show true critical thinking skills
to provide detail as to how it was a safe way to
escape from their home. Everyone did such a
great job and really enjoyed all of Firefighter
Brian’s insightful information. Not only did he
teach them about the rights and wrongs in a fire
but he taught them why firemen wear the fire
gear they do and the importance behind it. He
then allowed the students to hold his fire jacket
to see how heavy it actually is.
The students loved this and loved seeing
how fast a fireman has to get ready for a call as
Firefighter Brian quickly slipped into his fire
suit and put his mask on. This opportunity
provided a wonderful hands-on learning
experience for all the students.
