LINDEN'S OUTSTANDING CITIZEN JACK SHEEHY
John “Jack” Sheehy was honored by the
Linden Citizen’s Association with the “Paul
Werkmeister Outstanding Citizen Award”.
Named after the former Mayor of Linden who
founded the association, the award is given to a
member who has demonstrated exemplary
dedication to the city. Sheehy is being
recognized for his service.
Jack Sheehy has spent many years both
working in local politics and volunteering his
time to the community. He has spent his
weekends volunteering with youth in the MultiPurpose Center Masterpiece Program,
mentoring teenagers through organized sports.
Sheehy also supports community events with his
time, having volunteered for many years for the
Linden Halloween Parade, September to
Remember, and the Mal Eckred’s Soap Box
Derby.
Politically, Sheehy became a Linden
councilman at the age of 18. He later served two
terms as the 7th Ward Councilman for the years
2008-2013.
Sheehy married Linda Hesse in 1985. They
have four children, Jacklyn, Katelyn, Dayna,
and John III.
The Linden Citizen’s Association is pleased to recognize Jack Sheehy
as their Outstanding Citizen this year for all of his hard work, and sends
prayers for him now as he is in need of a kidney transplant.

LINDEN VETERANS COUNCIL MEMORIAL DAY
SERVICES HONORING THOSE WHO MADE THE
SUPREME SACRIFICE
The Linden Veterans Council, American
Legion, Post 102, Catholic War Veterans, Post
497, Marine League, Martin Danoski
Detachment, Polish Legion of American
Veterans, Post 91, Vietnam Veterans, Chapter
779 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 397 will
conduct their annual program of Honoring
Veterans who made the supreme sacrifice for
their country.
The Linden Veterans Council invites all
citizens who have family members who served
this nation are invited to join the Linden
Veterans in honoring their Military Comrades.
On Saturday May 23rd, the veterans will be
performing the honoring of our deceased
comrades by flag placement activities on veteran
graves. The participating members of the
veteran remembrance activity will visit Rose
Dale, Rose Hill and Mount Cavalry in Linden.
All Veterans, LHS ROTC and Linden
Residents will assemble at American Legion,
Post 102, at 112 E. Elizabeth Ave. at 8:30 am for
a light Breakfast, then proceed to the cemeteries.
The placing of memorial wreaths ceremony
on City of Linden Veterans Monuments will take
place on Monday, May 25th, All Veterans, LHS
ROTC and Linden Residents will assemble at
American Legion, Post 102, at 112 E. Elizabeth
Ave. at 8:30 am for a light Breakfast, then
proceed to the City Monuments by Bus.
All veterans are invited to join their fellow
veterans in honoring those veterans who have
made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

In addition to Anise’s outstanding academic
achievements, she also devotes her time to
various Linden High School clubs and activities.
She is a member of our National Honor Society,
French Honor Society, ESL Leadership Club,
EMAP, French Club, Key Club and an active
member of the International Club. Anise is also
a member of our very selective Peer Leadership

LINDEN HIGH SCHOOL TRICKY TRAY
Linden High School Parent Teacher
Association held its annual Tricky Tray
fundraising event on Saturday April 25, 2015. A
Tricky Tray is a combination of a raffle and an
auction with multiple prizes and baskets donated
by the community and business of Linden. A
special thank you to Chevy's of Linden who
donated the food for this event.
The Linden High School PTA Tricky Tray
was an engaging evening designed for the adults
of the community to come together for a great
cause. This program is innovative in that it
engages the community in fun-filled activities.
The PTA of Linden High School works in
partnership with a wide array of individuals and
organizations that benefit the students of Linden
High School directly through educational field
trips, assemblies, and through scholarships to
help further their education. The members of the
Linden High School PTA and all of the PTA's of
Linden Public Schools are dedicated to
promoting children's health, well-being, and
educational success through strong parent,
family, School and community involvement.

STEPHEN T. ZIELINSKI NAMED OUTSTANDING SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Zielinski, a lifelong
resident of Linden
has been chosen as
Linden’s
39th
Annual Outstanding
Senior Citizen of the
Year. This award is
bestowed annually
by
the
Linden
Department
of
Public Property and Community Services
Recreation Division upon the Senior Citizen
who displayed the most exceptional service to
the Community and his/her fellow seniors
during the year.
Stephen T. Zielinski was born on December 2,
1936 in the City of Linden, New Jersey. He is a
proud graduate of School #5, Soehl Junior High
School and Linden High School, class of 1954.
Not long after graduation, Stephen heard the
calling of his Country and joined the United
States Army, where he served in Japan for 2
years as a radar analyst.
Returning home to Linden, Stephen married
his sweetheart Mary Ann Urban and settled in
town to raise a family. Stephen and Mary Ann
are currently married 55 years and are the proud
parents of two sons: Stephen N. and Kenneth J.
and a grandson Stephen N. Jr. While his sons
grew up, Stephen became involved with the Boy
Scouts of America where for 11 years he served
as Committee Chairman and Weblo Leader for
Cub Pack #188 and then Scout Master of Troop
#188 at Linden School #8. Additionally, Stephen

Parish as an usher, and is the Senior Citizen
Liaison for the Yellow Ribbon Campaign to
Support U.S. Troops. In 2011, Stephen was
honored as the “Historian of the Year” by the
Linden Historical Society.

LINDEN HIGH SCHOOL
INTOXICATED DRIVING PREVENTION PROGRAM
The Linden High School Senior Class of 2015
participated in the Linden Intoxicated Driving
Prevention Program on April 24th 2015. This
program culminated with a drunk driving
accident simulation coordinated by the Linden
Police Department, and kicks off several weeks
of activities focused on preventing underage
drinking and drunk driving.
The activities began at Linden High School
where every 15 minutes, students were pulled
out of class and identified as "living dead" to
represent a statistic of intoxicated driving
fatalities. A police officer walked the Grim
Reaper and made announcements that a member
of the class 2015 was killed in (a simulated) an
intoxicated driving accident and spoke of
national statistics on drinking and driving. The
program culminated at Tiger Stadium where an
accident was be simulated and student actors
portrayed the wounded and dead. There were
two cars involved in the simulated accident and
with 3 injured student actors from the LHS
Drama classes. Linden High School Seniors
gathered at Tiger Stadium. A Pre-recorded
police/fire/ambulance chatter will be broadcast
for the remaining student body.

medic unit. A helicopter was scheduled to land
and take away a critically injured student.
Prevention Links will work the Law and
Government classes to enhance the story. The
work will result in the development of a court
case which will be presented to a senior
assembly on June 2nd and ties the program
together. Once all activities are complete, a
professionally edited video will be created so
that future classes may receive the same
education for years to come.
With the Prom, Memorial Day weekend and
graduation fast approaching, the students are
going to be faced with peer pressure regarding
drinking and driving. This program takes a
proactive step in educating Linden high school
students about making mature decisions when
alcoholic beverages and drugs are involved.
This program is sponsored by the Linden
Municipal Alliance with the collaboration of:

prevention of drugs, alcohol, and related issues),

THE 80TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE LINDEN INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION
The 80th Annual Meeting of the Linden
Industrial Association was held on April 27th, in
Amici III Restaurant in Linden. Guest speakers
included Mayor Derek Armstead and Sy
Mayerson, E-Map Director, Linden Public
Schools.
The purposes of the LIA are to promote the
mutual interests of industries located or having
interests in the City of Linden or surrounding
municipalities and for such other beneficial
purposes as may from time to time be
recommended by the Board of Trustees. The
LIA has also been known to take a stand on
issues in support of its membership and has
often aligned itself with the views of the New
Jersey State Chamber of Commerce and the
New Jersey Business and Industry Association,
especially on environmental issues. The
organization has retained a steady and active
membership since its formation in 1935. The
most important aspect of the LIA is the mutual
cooperation between the member businesses and

On Saturday, April 25th the NJ State FMBA
honored the bravest of the brave at their Annual
Valor Awards Banquet at the Pines Manor in
Edison.
Members of the Linden Fire
Department were in attendance along with
Mayor Derek Armstead, Councilwoman
Michele Yamakaitis and Councilman Bob
Sadowski to witness the department receiving
multiple awards.
The Night started off with the Linden Fire
Department Color Guard presenting the colors
to the over 750 in attendance. The awards
ceremony started with Linden FMBA
Firefighter’s Local 34 and Fire Officer’s Local
234 being honored as “2015 FMBA Local of the
Year” for their numerous charity and FMBA
involvements. The Linden Fire Department also
received “2015 Group Effort Award-Medical”
for their efforts on December 17th 2014 at a
motor vehicle accident on the NJ Turnpike
involving a NJ Transit bus and a tractor trailer
with multiple victims.

and computer skills training class designed for

SCHOOL 5 CELEBRATES EARTH DAY
To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, School
No. 5, third grade students in Mrs. Rokhsana
Suggs' class worked together to collect as many
water bottles as they could. Students reused the
plastic water bottles by turning the bottles into
flowers. This project allowed students to apply
what they have learned about helping our
environment. They recycled and reused the
plastic bottles, which reduced the amount of
trash on our planet.

PHILLIPS 66 LEADS MULTIPLE BENEFACTORS TO HELP TRINITAS
BOLSTER ITS PATIENT TRANSPORT CAPABILITIES
Trinitas Regional Medical Center has
introduced a new, high-tech specialty ambulance
thanks to combined funding support led by the
Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery. The new vehicle
will serve as the medical center’s first Specialty
Transport Care Unit (SCTU). Designed to
augment Trinitas’ current transport capabilities,
the SCTU will provide a higher level of
transport for patients who need to be
accompanied by a Registered Nurse, who is also
a paramedic.
As Gary S. Horan, FACHE, President and
CEO of Trinitas explains, “The SCTU will be
used for critical care patients who are being
transferred to the Trinitas Cardiac Cauterization
Lab from neighboring hospitals, or for dialysis
patients who may need a ventilator while they
are being transported for treatments. When
paramedics and registered nurses are not
committed to specialty transport activities, they
can be effectively deployed to respond to 911
calls in Elizabeth, and function as a Mobile
Intensive Care Unit (MICU) response team. The
SCTU complements and strengthens our
existing MICU as a vital new service for our
community.”
Wakefern Food Corporation (ShopRite), the
Gertrude L. Hirsch Charitable Trust, and the
Paragano Family Foundation, were additional
benefactors who made the purchase of the new
vehicle possible. The Phillips 66 Bayway
Refinery received Trinitas Health Foundation’s
Celebrating Philanthropy Award at the
