The role and mandate of the Council Fund excellent research within, and between, all disciplines Support the education and skills development of excellent individual early stage researchers and cultivate agile independent researchers and thinkers, whilst offering a range of opportunities which support diverse career paths. Enrich the pool of knowledge and expertise available for addressing Ireland’s current and future challenges, whether societal, cultural or economic Abridged from Irish Research Council Strategy New Horizons – Context “The Irish Research Council will play a particular role in supporting the AHSS community in addition to supporting and cultivating the broader community across all disciplines to engage in cross and interdisciplinary research..” P.14 Specific Aims of New Horizons STRAND ONE: Support emerging researchers in AHSS through an investigator led, curiosity driven ‘Starter’ research project from any AHSS discipline. (primer for ERC) STRAND TWO: Enable AHSS researchers to incubate (and lead) in the short term, collaborative interdisciplinary research projects with STEM researchers, with a view to targeting opportunities and calls in all the Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges Research for Policy and Society - Context “Government funded research programmes and projects should be identified and justified by the relevant Government Departments and agencies, and should be evaluated using appropriate peer review systems. Ultimately, the value of such funding should be judged in terms of the extent to which the research helps improve the quality of decisions around policy, services and systems and the benefits, outcomes and impacts that flow from them.” (Research Prioritisation Report, P. 39) Aims of Research for Policy & Society? To build on existing partnerships with government departments, agencies, enterprise and civil society in providing peer reviewed research to underpin policy decisions. “There are many other needs-driven issues that require research to underpin social progress and economic growth, such as child development, dealing with unemployment, enterprise, policy, education, training and re-training, social integration, etc.“ (p.40, Research Prioritisation Report) New Horizons (IDR Strand) – Drawing on Best Practice Internationally “New Horizons” concept draws on inputs from international experts on IDR following the IRC Annual Symposium last November. In particular: • Professor Catherine Lyall, University of Edinburgh • Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) New Horizons – STRAND TWO Leading and facilitating the development of an interdisciplinary research proposal. The AHSS lead applicant should ensure that there is strong consideration of the potential societal impact of the project. Strong role for the AHSS Lead on the “soft” desk based research of an interdisciplinary project with STEM researchers involved in the “hard” elements. Eligibility For New Horizons Strand One: AHSS academic or researcher (P.I.) who already holds a contract of sufficient duration on the call deadline of 23rd June 2015, to carry out the proposed research from the project start date (1st November 2015) The P.I. sole applicant for Strand One will be the holder of a doctoral degree which was awarded between 1st November 2008 and 1st November 2014 Eligibility For New Horizons Strand Two: Both named AHSS Lead P.I. and named STEM CoP.I. hold a contract of sufficient duration on the call deadline of 23rd June 2015, to carry out the proposed research from the project start date (1st November 2015) Both AHSS Lead and STEM Co-P.I. have been awarded their doctoral degrees no later than 1st November 2013 Eligibility For Research for Policy & Society Applicants shall have on the date of award commencement a PhD for at least two years and must already hold a contract of sufficient duration to carry out the term of the award. An applicant (sole) may make only ONE application under this scheme. Applicants are advised that they must be in a position to devote adequate time to the management and realisation of their project. What does an interdisciplinary research project look like? When conceptualising the research problem and planning the work programme you may well need to plan for the project to take longer than a monodisciplinary collaboration; plan more group working and be prepared to facilitate this process, especially during the early framing stages. • Lyall & Meagher, 2007 New Horizons – STRAND TWO – Co Applicants – Role of NCPs/NDs “Key part of developing career as an interdisciplinary researcher and involves building a network of contacts through meetings at conferences, personal recommendations from trusted colleagues, and perhaps testing the water with new collaborators through smaller joint projects before you embark on a more substantial piece of work together.” • Lyall and Meagher, 2007 How National Contact Points can help: • Brief supporting statement from relevant NCP (or National Delegate) included by applicant in their online submission (pdf) on the relevance of their proposal’s concept to a likely societal challenge call • Assistance from the NCPs in match-making STEM researchers with AHSS! Societal Challenges Health & Well Being Food Security Sustainable Energy Green, integrated mobility Climate & Environment Inclusive societies Secure societies Example of Interdisciplinary Research in Societal Challenges • The ‘Monitoring, Managing and Transferring Marine and Maritime Knowledge for Sustainable Blue Growth’, or COLUMBUS project, will run for three years until 2018 and involves 26 partners from across Europe. Those involved are managing knowledge and carrying out knowledge transfer of marine research outputs to increase their uptake and application by different end users, such as industry, policy makers and society. • BLUE GROWTH:UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF SEAS AND OCEANS ‘New Horizons’ Project Costs Collaboration (Strand 2 Only) Please provide details of expenditure to be incurred in terms of collaborative activities, where relevant. These will primarily consist of travel, networking and/or dissemination activities and must be strongly demonstrated. Maximum of €10,000 Consultancy (Strand 2 Only) Relevant and justifiable up to a maximum of €5,000. Dissemination Details of costs proposed and channels to be used. Consumables Maximum of €1,000 Travel Costs Travel and accommodation costs may be included as part of the proposal. Details on the number and duration of trips being proposed are required. Every effort must be made to ensure that travel expenses are minimised (e.g. economy fares only). Subsistence or per diems are not an eligible cost. Overheads These must NOT exceed maximum of 25% of modified direct costs. Overhead does not apply to equipment costs Equipment Strongly justified. Guiding principle, costs sought should by driven by the proposed research. Cost should facilitate the successful completion of such.
