new and innovative ways. When these
three artists become completely abstract
they bring the AM aesthetic into a new
form of minimal art.

19 contemporary artists.

Become a Museum Docent
Many volunteer jobs are personally rewarding, few as much as being a docent at
Nassau County Museum of Art. Docents engage in life-long learning, on their own
and in ongoing training provided by the Museum’s Education Department. They
meet like-minded people among the Museum’s group of docents at weekly training
sessions and during social activities such as art-related trips, often forming new
friendships. Docents make a significant commitment to the Museum—those who
present exhibition tours for adults and family groups at the Museum as well as those
who expand the Museum’s reach by presenting illustrated talks at venues such as
senior centers and libraries. Potential docents must have computer and Internet
access. To learn more about how to become a Museum docent, please write to
Director of Educator Laura Lynch at [email protected].
Reservations may be made online up to three days prior to an event at

nassaumuseum.org
Nassau County Museum of Art and its activities are made possible through the support
of Nassau County, under County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Nassau County
Legislature, the Museum’s Board of Trustees, memberships, corporate memberships,
event and exhibition sponsors, admissions, special events, private and corporate
donations, and government and foundation grants. The Museum is chartered and
accredited by New York State as a not-for-profit private educational institution and is
governed by a privately elected Board of Trustees.
Each year the Museum’s more than 300
volunteers are honored at a beautiful
luncheon sponsored by the Museum’s
Founding Chairman and Life Trustee, the
late Amb. Arnold A. Saltzman. We are
very pleased to have this annual
opportunity to remind all of our
volunteers how much they mean to the
Museum. Special honorees at the 2013
luncheon were Natalie Tchernovitz,
Barbara Stewart, Lynn Wischler and
Linda Leonard, each of whom celebrated
five years of service to the Museum.
The volunteers are a critical component
in the functioning of the Museum,—from
the friendly faces at the front desk,
helping customers in the Museum Store,
signing up new members in the Museum
lobby, and assisting staff members in just
about every department. Director of
Volunteers Nancy Barone ably enlists
and supervises their work. Our 50
docents, coordinated by Riva Ettus and
Helen Fleishler, train to conduct highly
informative exhibition tours at the
Museum, and also to present off-site
programs at libraries, senior centers and
other community venues.
Meet
Julie Harris
If you’re a weekend
visitor to the Museum,
you know Julie Harris.
He’s the tall
distinguished gentleman you see, usually
in the lobby but sometimes dashing
around to make sure all’s going smoothly
for museum goers and people attending
programs. Jules is the Museum’s
unflappable manager for Saturdays and
Sundays. He’s been running things
expertly for 21 years. Look for him on
your next visit and say “Hi Julie.”

EDUCATION
Rich Santangelo and Alice Bryant of the
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary led Owl
Prowl!, an exciting evening program that
introduced families to different types of
owls. Participants trekked through the
Museum’s Pinetum to listen for the owls
roosting in the trees.
Inspired by the portraits and poetry of
our recent exhibition of works by Alex
Katz, families created collage portraits,
wrote poetry about what makes their
family special and shared their work
with other family groups participating in
the program.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART / MARCH 2014
We’re looking forward to a second year
of our exciting summer art workshop for
children. Summer Art Lab features
separate sessions for children ages 5 to
8, and ages 9 to 13. Each two-week
session is filled with stimulating art
activities indoors and out. Our
classrooms are the Museum’s Gold
Coast Mansion for art in the galleries
and the extraordinary 145 acres of
fields, ponds, gardens and sculpture of
the former Frick estate. Sessions begin
on July 21 and August 11. For details,
visit nassaumuseum.org.

Hundreds flocked to the book and poster
signings that Peter Max offered at the
Museum during the run of our exhibition
of his drawings and paintings. The artist
even included a personal dedication on
each item he signed!
Every chair in the room was filled for Dr.
Charles A. Riley’s Conversation with
Peter Max. Dr. Riley, the author of The
Art of Peter Max, engagingly questioned
the artist about his life and work. They
discussed creativity, studio life, the uses
of color and the art of drawing.
Traveling back to the early 20th century,
Winter in a Gold Coast Mansion gave us
an opportunity to use the Museum’s
incredible Frick Mansion just as the
children of the Frick family did—we
tried out weaving, we played games of
the time, and we enjoyed small animals
brought to us by The Science Museum
of Long Island.
Peter Max Family Day was one of the
most fun events we’ve ever presented.
Children and adults alike were intrigued
as Max created a work before them and
discussed his artistic process and ideas.
The artist also judged a coloring contest
in which kids completed a black and
white drawing that Max created just for
the day. All of the entries were then
placed on temporary exhibition.
