MANAGING THE FUTURE
Admission Requirements for
UTRGV entering freshmen for Fall 2015
Students at UTRGV will be talented, compassionate,
hard-working, goal-oriented, and community-minded.
So when we look at applicants, we won’t simply focus
on grades and test scores. We will take a holistic
approach to admissions so that we get a well-rounded
picture of who each applicant is and how they would
impact our campus community.
High school graduates in the top 10 percent of their
graduating class receive assured admission to
UTRGV. All UTRGV entering freshman applicants will
have their own portfolio, and admissions decisions will
be based on that portfolio and their accomplishments
in high school. Factors for review will include:

Stephanie Mendez feels confident that her bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing,
that she will receive in May, will serve her well in a variety of career paths.
UTRGV to be into the Business of Success
“I gained knowledge of how the
world works,” said Stephanie Mendez,
senior Business Administration in
Marketing and Management major at
the University of Texas at Brownsville.
“Principles and skills obtained while
taking this degree path can be applied
in the public or private sector, as well
as in personal life.”
While attaining a degree in
Business Administration, students
are exposed to critical skills such as
time management, personal finance,
goal setting and communication.
Degrees offering a range of business
specializations will continue to be
offered at The University of Texas Rio
Grande Valley beginning in fall 2015.
“Personally, I believe business
teaches so many life skills that
are necessary to be successful in
any field,” said Russell Adams,
Associate Professor of Marketing
and International Business and Chair
of the Department of Management,
Marketing, International Business,
Entrepreneurship
and
Materials
Management and Logistics
Mendez encourages students to seek
opportunities outside the classroom,
such as job shadowing, internships,
fellowships and study abroad.
She was an Archer Fellow during the
fall 2014 semester. Mendez was a policy
intern for the White House Initiative on
Educational Excellence for Hispanics,
housed at the U.S. Department of
Education. She worked on the Federal
Interagency Working Group, which is
a group of federal agencies that strive
to make investments in education that
benefit the Hispanic community.
Professors prepare students to
anticipate the competitive globalized
marketplace needs so they can position
themselves to be successful.
“If you’re going to work the world
of business, you’re going to have
to understand the different cultures
around the world,” said Tom Coyle,
Associate Professor of Management
in the School of Business. “We’re
living in such a global economy that
even if you wanted to live and work
only in Brownsville, it’s impossible for
you to do that without understanding
how the rest of the world thinks. This
degree offers a lot of technology
interaction skills.”
The School of Business is a member
of the SAP University Alliance, along
with a select number of business
schools in the United States.
“Seventy percent of the world’s
goods move everyday while utilizing
this SAP program, and for our students
to say that they’ve taken some SAP
content courses is a large benefit,”
Coyle said.
Coyle said SAP certification can
increase a student’s employability by
30 – 50 percent.
“Eighty percent of Fortune 500
companies use SAP,” said Adams. “We
are committed to getting our students
good jobs and preparing them for those
good jobs.”
Mendez has applied for a oneyear fellowship, a policy-related
internship with the Congressional
Hispanic Institute. She also plans on
beginning her Master of Business
Administration program.
“If you feel like you’re a dynamic,
competitive person that wants to be
successful, then this is the school to
come to,” said Adams. “We will support
you in getting the skills necessary for
you to achieve your potential.”
