When An Icon Passes
Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Davy Jones, Levon Helm,
Dick Clark. Each was a cultural touchstone of varying degrees, with
varying relevance to country music and its audience. How a Country
station responds when an out-of-format icon
passes can be an important part of deepening
connections with the listener.
“Lifestyle always trumps genre,” says WQDR/
Raleigh Station Manager/PD Lisa McKay.
“These are monumental events.” WGSQ/
Cookeville, TN PD Philip Gibbons says failure
to acknowledge the passing of a superstar is
Michael Jackson “inexcusable. “Our target demo had a healthy
dose of these personalities. Country radio should
always inform its listeners when a pop icon dies.”
News coverage, certainly. But how much
further can and should a station take things? “In
this day of ‘come and gone’ celebrity, the merits
of those that actually changed how we moved
culturally should be celebrated,” argues KKGO/
Los Angeles PD Tonya Campos.
The late Dick Clark is the most directly

connected to country among those listed above,
but also the only one who was not an artist.
For KKGO, celebrating Clark was personal,
as the station’s Shawn Parr has voiced Clark’s
ACM Awards show for almost two decades.
“Shawn was on the air when the news came in,”
Campos explains. Coming out of Garth Brooks’
“The Dance,” Parr announced that Clark had
passed away and dedicated the song to him.

Remote In Your Pocket
“We first used iRig at the end of last year during a live
broadcast where we were giving away a Toyota Tundra,” says
WQYK/Tampa OM/PD Mike Culotta. He’s talking about a
relatively new and indispensable tool in his station’s arsenal – an
iPhone app. “Our jock walked around, grabbed actualities and
edited them down. When we did get a winner, he sent the file to
the studio and within seconds had them on the air. The humorous
thing is there’s no big box, no ISDN line. All that other stuff we’re
used to carrying and dealing with is gone. And it’s a $5 app.”

One of many audio-related products from IK Multimedia,
iRig Recorder comes in limited-functionality free and fullfunction paid versions ($4.99) from the iTunes App Store. More
than a simple recording app, iRig provides common editing
tools and filters. Record an interview using the iPhone’s built-in
mic or available external models ($39.99-$59.99), edit the clip,
adjust volume, adjust tone, brighten or smooth the voice, adjust
the speed or shift the pitch. “’Optimize Volume’ seems to be the
function we use most,” Culotta says.
“If that’s not enough, when you have the audio where you
want it, there’s an export button,” he continues. “You can email it,
iTunes file share it, send it to an FTP upload or send it to the sound
cloud. If you email it, it automatically pops up with your email
address, file name, day, time and location. A Quicktime file in
m4A format is attached and you’re ready to rock.”
Cheap to buy and easy to use, iRig might be most
indispensible for always being at hand. “If their phone is with them
they can just pop it on,” Culotta says.
“Let’s be real. When you walk into
a party or an event with a mic and
recording device, you look pretty out
of place. You’re the geek. But nobody
questions an iPhone. Dave McKay was
riding his motorcycle the day after
Thanksgiving, saw a big line outside
a mall, pulled up and recorded 10
interviews for the next day’s show.
“Steve Austin went to St. Jude and had
done all the basic tracking of his show
before he left, but he wanted to give some specifics like weather,
and there were some live reads, etc. So he excused himself for
30 minutes and cut everything, then sent it back to the studio via
individual tracks. We also use it a lot when we’re backstage.
“If you see a star, an artist or local celebrity, you instantly have
an interview. If you’re in radio right now, you’d be hard-pressed
to convince me you shouldn’t have this. Every jock I have has an
iPhone and they all use this.”

1. Michael Jackson’s Thriller: I.
Love. Michael. I grew up listening to/
rocking out/doing a cheerleading
routine to nearly every Michael song;
especially from the Thriller album.
2. Reba/Fancy: It wasn’t until my
Shelley Hargis junior year in high school that I really
started listening to country and fell in
love with Reba. I loved everything about her, and “Fancy” is
my all-time favorite.
3. Craig Morgan/That’s What I Love About Sunday:
I will never forget this for many reasons: This was the first
No. 1 record I ever worked as a regional; it was a five-week
chart-topper; it was Craig’s first No. 1; and we did it on an
indie label before indie labels were on the map.
4. Epic Alley Rally: I was with Epic/Nashville for six years,
and this event was our label showcase during CRS when
it was still at Opryland. One year, we packed the Bourbon
Street Blues & Boogie Bar with all our artists – Collin Raye,
Joe Diffie, Ty Herndon, The Kinleys, Sons of the Desert and
Patty Loveless. Tanya Tucker crashed the party, and it all went
crazy from there.
5. Jason Aldean, Academy of Country Music Awards,
2005: That’s when Jason won Top New Male Artist. The BBR
staff was sitting way up in the top seats, and we went nuts
when he won! We cried, screamed and cried again. I’ll never
forget that night.
• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never
heard: I am almost embarrassed to say, but I have never
actually listened to a complete album by Elvis Presley or
Miles Davis. Obviously, I know the songs.
• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get:
Anything by Radiohead and Widespread Panic.

Gibbons reports, “Our personalities each
did a tribute of some kind – a story, montage of
his audio and what he meant to the industry.”
At KFKF/Kansas City, PD Dale Carter played
the Mike Curb-composed theme to American
Bandstand in tribute to Clark,
much as he had the late
Lisa McKay
Michael Jackson’s “Rock With
You” after his 2009 death. “It
sounded a little odd on KFKF,” he admits. “It’s
rare when these things happen, but I don’t think
you can ignore it.”
Carter went further with last year’s passing
Dale Carter
of Whitney Houston, acknowledging her biggest
hit’s connection to Country through Dolly Parton.
He alternated the two versions of the song every
hour throughout the day. McKay’s reaction to Houston’s death
was muted by the news having broken during
NASCAR coverage on a weekend. “Monday,
the morning show was rightfully all over it with
montages and memories,” she says.
That contrasts with ‘QDR’s treatment of
Jackson’s demise. “I immediately put together
a quick MJ montage and took calls about how
Michael touched listeners’ lives. It became a
Tonya Campos powerful shared experience.”

Josh Abbott Band Small Town Family Dream (PDT)
The Josh Abbott Band split time between
the road and the studio to record their third
album with producer Erik Herbst. Abbott
wrote or co-wrote seven songs including the
lead single “Touch” and “Idalou,” which is
about his hometown. “It’s a concept album
that glorifies a simple way of life that a lot of Americans live,”
Abbott says. Kacey Musgraves provides background vocals on
five tracks. Pat Green guests on “My Texas.”
Lee Brice Hard 2 Love (Curb)
Lead single “A Woman Like You” is Brice’s
first No. 1 hit as a solo artist. Brice co-wrote
eight tracks including “See About A Girl,”
while Johnny Bulford, Phil Barton and Jon
Stone co-wrote “Woman.” Jessie Alexander,
Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary cowrote “I Drive Your Truck.” Eric Church, Jerrod Niemann and
Thomas Rhett are among the other songwriters. Brice, Stone,
Kyle Jacobs, Doug Johnson and Matt McClure co-produced.
Kip Moore Up All Night (MCA)
Moore co-wrote every song on his 11-track
debut album including the Top 10 single
“Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck.” “I want people to
be emotionally connected to this album like
the records I gravitated to when I was younger
by Jackson Browne, Bob Seger and Bruce
Springsteen,” Moore says. “I feel like it’s a very honest record.”

Though some artists register lower in
audience consciousness, five Country stations
gave The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” at
least one spin in memory of Jones’ passing. No
airplay was cited for Helm or The Band, though
WQDR did take at least one call from a listener
remembering his contributions.
While each cultural icon and situation

will be different, there does seem to be some
general consensus on how programmers
should respond. “Country partisans have
values associated with artists where they are
held in high regard,” says WCOL/Columbus,
OH PD John Crenshaw. “That extends to
artists in other formats even though that music
may not be their first choice.” A key point, he
adds, is considering the Country core’s familyfriendly bent. “Don’t scrape the gutter for
details,” he says.

Becky Brenner offers a playbook of sorts:
“Audio clips in short spurts are well-received and help listeners
mourn the passing while reliving personal
memories,” she says. Social media can be
implemented, too. “Website, Facebook and
Twitter postings from air talent will make the
station real and empathetic to how listeners are
feeling.” Utilize tasteful imaging that contains
messages of sympathy and air callers sharing
their own stories about the artist. “Everything
needs to be edited and presented in an

artist interview:
What station did you grow up
listening to? WKHX/Atlanta.
Do you remember the first time
you heard yourself on the radio?
I was getting out of the shower and

getting ready for a show in Atlanta
when my first single “Wanted” came
on. I was wrapped in a towel, and my friend was in the room
with me. We both started jumping up and down, screaming
and crying. If the people across the street at the other
hotel saw us through the window, they would have thought
something else was going on.
How do you adjust to all the travel on the radio tour?
I take lots of vitamins and try to sleep as much as I possibly
can. I learned to get ready in 20 minutes.
Which regional is the most interesting driver? Greg
Sax. One time, we were heading to KBEQ/Kansas City when
he stopped the car, got out in the middle of the street and
danced to Snoop Dogg’s “Sensual Seduction.” We got it all
on video. It was beautiful.
Who takes the longest to get through airport security?
My guitarist Gordon Brown. He’s a total rock star with all his
silver jewelry. But his nipple piercings trigger the metal detectors.
How do you keep things loose on the road? I’m such a
prankster. I was meeting one of my guitarists for the first time,
and my road manager decided that we were going to draw
a fake mustache and unibrow on me for the meeting. She
prefaced him by saying, “Look, Jessie has some facial hair
problems. We’re trying to get her to shave it. Just don’t look
directly at her.” At one point I asked, “Do you think I’m pretty
even though I have facial hair?” He wouldn’t even look at me!
He was just like, “Yeah! Sure!”
