Materials for classes at River Knits must be purchased at River Knits so that we can remain in business to keep offering you more great
classes!
Classes may be cancelled at the instructor’s discretion if minimum enrollment is not reached.
Knitting Survival Kit – In addition to the specific materials required for your class, it is helpful to bring a “basic knitting kit” with you to
most classes beyond Knit Basics. This kit should include a small pair of scissors, stitch markers, stitch holders, a crochet hook, a darning
needle, pencil and “post-its”, and a tape measure. Having these basic supplies on hand before class starts helps you have more time to
learn from the instructor during class
Rigid Heddle Weaving: Finger Manipulated Techniques **Note this class was rescheduled from May**
Saturday, June 20, 10 am-12pm
Instructor: Heather Wenig Cost: $20
Learn how to create variety in your rigid heddle weaving. Techniques like leno, brook’s bouquet, Danish
medallion and hemstitching are all “finger manipulated” weaving techniques that will add beauty to your
project and interest to your process. This is a technique class, not a project class, so any worsted weight yarn
and rigid heddle width will work.
Materials: rigid heddle loom, 2 shuttles, crochet hook, weft yarn in two colors (only wind one shuttle before
class), tapestry needle, pick up stick Homework: warp your yarn to at least an 8” weaving width and with a 2
yard warp length
Brioche Stitch—in the round Tuesday, June 23; 7-‐9 pm Instructor: Amanda Gill Why do we need a second Brioche Stitch class for knitting in the round? Because the technique is just different enough when we never have to deal with the wrong side that it deserves its own class! In this class, we’ll knit a cowl. Like the “knit flat” class, we’ll start with just one color, then add another. Materials: 2 colors worsted weight yarn, 24” size 8 circular needles, stitch marker. Cost: $20 Toe-‐Up Socks Tuesdays, June 30, July 7, 14; 7-‐9 pm Instructor: Amanda Gill Socks are the hottest knitting project around! Using Judy’s Magic Cast On and a really cool heel turn that looks like a traditional heel flap, this pattern is a fun new approach to toe-‐up socks. Plus, you can just knit until you run out of yarn! (This is not the short-‐row toe and heel that has been taught in previous toe-‐up socks classes.) Materials: Worsted weight yarn, Set of 5 US size 4 double-‐pointed needles OR Two 24” US size 4 circular needles (if you tend to knit loosely use size 3 needles), pattern provided. Cost: $60 Beginning Knitting Wednesday, July 8, 6-‐8 pm Instructor: Heather Wenig Cost: $20 It’s time you learned to knit…or finally convinced that friend to learn to knit. J This class is for anyone who has ever looked at something a friend, family or coworker has made and thought “I wish I could make stuff like that.” Help Session Saturday, July 11, 10am-‐12pm Instructor: Heather Wenig Cost: $20 Want to learn a new skill but there isn’t a class on the schedule for that skill? Do you have a project on the needles that is causing you stress? Need a little help understanding a pattern? Did you take Beginning Knitting and just need a little more support? Come to the Help Session! Knit a Headband Sunday, July 12, 1-‐4 pm Instructor: Amanda Gill Headbands are fun, quick projects that use very little yarn but make a big impact. It can also be a great project for learning new skills! In this class, we’ll knit a headband that incorporates ribbing, cables, and lace. All techniques will be covered in this 3-‐hour workshop, and by the end, you’ll be well on your way to a fun new headband! Materials: Leftover fingering weight sock yarn totaling about 20 grams or about 80 yards, size US2 needles, a ½” to ¾” button. Cost: $30 KnitCompanion: Basic Skills Saturday, July 18, 1-‐5pm Instructor: Amanda Gill What is KnitCompanion? Only the best thing ever for knitters who own iPads, iPhones or iPod Touches. I’m sorry to report that it is not available on other platforms. Since I started using KnitCompanion a few years ago, I have completely stopped using paper patterns. I always know where I am in my pattern and can easily pick up a project that’s been left sitting for a long time and know exactly where I left off. In this class, you will learn how to set up a basic pattern in KnitCompanion. We’ll cover quick start, setting up text pieces (including Text Overlay), chart pieces, keys, written row instructions to coordinate with chart rows(Row Reminders), basic highlighting and annotating, and more. It is important to note that KC has recently changed the way they charge for their app. You can download the app for free and have very very basic functionality limited to “Quick Start.” However, to get the most out of this class, you will need the full version of KC. If you have had the “full version” of KnitCompanion installed previously, you are good to go for this class. However, if you have never used KC before, you’ll want to purchase at least the “Setup” option, which is $9.99/year. If you are also planning to take the Advanced class on July 25, you’ll need the “kC Bundle” instead for $10.99/year, which includes Magic Markers. If you are a Legacy user (meaning you already own the full version), you can pick up Magic Markers for $3.99. Materials: An iPad loaded with the full version of KnitCompanion OR with the “Setup” one-‐year subscription installed. (If you do not wish to purchase the “Setup” and do not have the full version, you are welcome to attend class and see what it’s all about, but you will miss out on the hands-‐on activities. (Unfortunately, KnitCompanion is not available for other devices.) Some sample patterns will be emailed to you a week before class along with basic instructions for how to put them on your iPad so they are ready to be used in class. Cost: $40 Shawls and Wraps
Tuesdays, July 21, 28, August 4; 7-9 pm
Instructor: Amanda Gill
Shawls are for everyone! There are so many different shapes in lace, color work, stripes, garter stitch, cables, you name
it! You can find a pattern as complicated or as simple as you want. In this three-part class, you choose which pattern you
want to knit, and Amanda will help you navigate the instructions and techniques. If you need help choosing a pattern,
contact Amanda at [email protected].
Materials: Pattern of your choice and yarn, needles, notions as stated in pattern.
Cost: $60
KnitCompanion: Advanced Skills Saturday, July 25, 1-‐5 pm Instructor: Amanda Gill This class will build on the skills learned in the Basics class. I’ll walk you through how to piece together different charts using the Template function, how to set up and use Smart Counters and Magic Markers, audio reminders, and some other really great tricks I’ve learned from several years of using KC. Prerequisite: You must have either taken the Basic Skills class OR already be very familiar with the skills taught in that class. We will not rehash basic skills. We will dive right in to the more advanced stuff. Materials: An iPad loaded with the full version of KnitCompanion + “Magic Markers” one-‐year subscription OR with the “kC Bundle” one-‐year subscription installed. Some sample patterns will be emailed to you a week before class along with basic instructions for how to put them on your iPad so they are ready to be used in class. **Please also bring a pattern or two that you would like to set up in KC. ** Cost: $40 Beginning Rigid Heddle Weaving
Saturday, August 8, 9am-12pm
Instructor: Heather Wenig
Cost: $30
This class will take you through all the steps you need to know to begin weaving on a rigid heddle loom: determining how
much yarn you need for a project, determining which reed size you will need for your yarn, warping your loom and
weaving your project. You will warp and begin work on a set of two kitchen towels.
Materials: rigid heddle loom (I recommend the 20” loom, but if you have a 8” or 12”, you can still make dishcloths!), 7.5 dpi
reed, brown craft paper, an empty cardboard paper towel tube (or two, if you are using a 20” loom), 3 (8” or 12” loom) or 5
(20” loom) balls of Sugar and Cream cotton, warping tools included with your loom, 1 shuttle
