RM of Whitemouth news update for May 2015 as advertised in the

The Clipper
May 7, 2015
The final EMCA concert
was held at the Pinawa CC
on April 24 and featured
Saskatoon folk and blues
singer Suzie Vinnick. She
was joined on stage by
Winnipeg’s legendary guitar playing blues man Big
Dave McLean. Playing
backup were Ryan Menard
on bass guitar with Johanna
Miller on drums.
Suzie has won a host of
awards for her song writing
and albums. She previously
toured with Stuart MacLean’s Vinyl Café and the
John McDermott Band. Her
expertise with the guitar as
well as her laid back style
has drawn audiences to her
performances.
Big Dave (also originally from Saskatchewan)
has been singing the blues
for decades. His raw and
gravelly voice combined
with his talent on guitar
and harmonica have made
him recognizable as one of
Canada’s top blues sing-
ers. Once again the EMCA
organizers have brought top
talent into the North Eastman area.
Another season of
concerts has come to a
close and we are left with
memories of some great
entertainment and eagerly
wait the next season’s list
of concerts beginning in
September. A big round
of thanks goes out to the
dedicated volunteers of
the EMCA board who put
in many hours of work to
bring world class entertainment to this area.
We are all familiar with
the Turchyn family of Hadashville and their love of
Ukrainian dancing. Father
David Turchyn and his
children Kaitlyn and Dylan
have both appeared at many
dance performances on
various stage performances
in Manitoba.
On May 14, Kaitlyn
and Dylan will appear with
the Rusalka Dancers on
the Winnipeg Centennial
Concert Hall stage. The
occasion is the 125th anniversary celebration of
the Ukrainian immigration
to Canada.
The Whitemouth Volunteer Fire Department
would like to thank all
those generous caring people who provided food and
beverages to the fire fighters fighting fires on April
29. It has been a bad two
weeks for fires what with
the dry conditions and high
winds.
A fire ban is in effect
for all Eastman areas, as of
press time. Be extremely
careful when travelling and
operating equipment. Rain
is presently in the forecast
as we hope for enough to
ease the fire danger.
The Elma CC will hold
the final Wing Night for
the season on Saturday,
May 23. Join in the fun at
the Elma Hall and watch
hockey, play cards, have
supper and do some catching up with friends. Advance tickets are available
by phoning 204-348-7734
or 204-348-2320.
Sunday, May 10 is
Mother’s Day. Be sure to
honour your mother with
a card, phone call or visit.
This weekend heralds
another special celebration.
It is the 70th anniversary
of VE (Victory in Europe)
Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Veterans will be attending
celebrations in Holland
where Canadian Forces
were instrumental in liberating the country from the
Nazi regime. The people
of Holland have never forgotten how the Canadians
came to their aid in 1945.
They faithfully tend the
cemeteries where Canadian
soldiers lie, planting flowers and keeping the white
headstones pristine.
I spoke to a veteran who
had attended the 60th VE
Day ceremony and he told
me how people of all ages
came to thank him with
tears in their eyes for the
sacrifices he and his fellow
servicemen made. Even
today schoolchildren in
Holland are taught to respect and honour the Canadian military. It has been
a lifetime of gratitude and
friendship.
Now in their 80s and
90s, this will be the last time
that many veterans are able
to make the journey overseas. They will be confined
to watching celebrations
on TV.
The saddest part for
many of them is the fact
that war still goes on. The
horror and death they witnessed did not change the
attitudes of governments or
those individuals who strive
for power and greed. What a
shame that we can learn the
lessons of those who have
lived them.
Despite the dry and dangerous conditions it is a
great spring season. Enjoy
and stay well.

There is much planning and preparing for an Art
Show. Two Rivers in collaboration with the Whitemouth
School are busy getting this first time event happening
right here in Whitemouth. Mark June 6 on your calendars
for that will be the day Whitemouth will come to life.
This is the day Home Hardware puts on their annual
Customer Appreciation Day with a free lunch, our local
library has a book sale for their fund raiser and there are
garage sales galore.
This year you can add to that the Expect Respect Art
Show and Tea held in the Whitemouth School’s multipurpose room. This event is made possible by a grant received
by Two Rivers Services to Seniors.
Seniors and students have been working together on
art throughout the year with Joan Hyra, who focused her
theme on respect. This is the message World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day (WEAAD) wants the public to get. So it
is a good fit for seniors and students working together for
the common goal. In working together senior and student
gain a new respect for each other.
Intergenerational Day Canada is on June 1; a day set
aside to remind us that every day is an opportunity to connect between generations.
There will be a short presentation on WEEAD, which
is recognized annually on June 15, so June 6 is a good day
to bring young and older together to celebrate what they
have created, not just in beautiful and meaningful works
of art, but also in relating to one another in the process.
The art show will feature two special Mosaic pieces that
local artist Annie is creating with the ideas put together by
these two age groups.
The many pieces that will be on display include works
of art from Kindergarten to Grade 12 students, all had a
part in it, and seniors joined in to work alongside them
throughout the last few months.
There is still time to become a part of the Expect Respect
Art Show and work alongside the students and artist. Call
me at 204-348-4610. The tea that will be a part of the whole
event will feature students in special attire as part of the
showcase. There is no cost to attend.

If you have some spare time and want to be involved with different organizations, volunteers are desperately needed for the following: Two Rivers Service to
Seniors, R.M. of Whitemouth Emergency Response Team and the Whitemouth
Recreation Centre. These organizations need you for ideas and help to keep all
the activities going, whether for seniors, youth, and children, for curling, hall
rentals, building maintenance, or potential emergencies. No one wants to see all
that has been done by volunteers to fall apart and our communities have nothing
to attract new or returning residents.
