Metal and Horror Collide at Kirk Von Hammett’s 2nd

passio n fo r their favo rite genres at Kirk Vo n Hammet’s 2nd
Annual Fear FestEvil, held at San Jo se’s fabulo us new Ro ckBar
Theater.
In addit ion t o his horror collect ion
on display, t he weekend long event f eat ured a st ar st udded list of guest s
such as f ormer Marilyn Manson axeman John 5, Ant hrax’s drumming beast
Charlie Benant e, Slipknot f ront man Corey T aylor and on Sunday, Rock N Roll
Hall of Fame guit arist SLASH. In addit ion, a mega-line-up including t hrash
met al heavy-hit t ers Ghoul, Asadah Messiah, Orchid, Agnost ic Front , High on
Fire and f inal day headliner Meshuggah, all graced t he RockBar st age.
Met allica’s longt ime lead guit arist is not only number 11 on Rolling St ones
list of t he t op 100 Great est Guit arist s, he may also be one of t he world’s
most passionat e af icionado’s and collect ors of horror f ilm memorabilia. His
ext ensive collect ion f eat ures lif e-sized replicas of some of horrors great est
monst ers and villains, classic movie post ers, comic books, f igurines, anyt hing
and everyt hing you could t hink of , relat ed t o horror. Hammet t ’s passion f or
horror began at a very early age af t er seeing t he f ilm T he Day of T he T rif f ids.
He t hen began collect ing horror comic books and his collect ion evolved and
grew over t he course of t he last 30 years.
Horror f ilm “royalt y” Sara Karlof f , Bela Lugosi Jr., Ron Chaney and
ot hers, joined Kirk f or a special VIP, murder myst ery dinner t heat er at San
Jose’s hist oric Winchest er Myst ery House on Friday t o kick of f t he weekend’s
f est ivit ies. Avid f ans, some in t heir own horror make-up and cost ume,
began lining up early on Sat urday morning f or t he event . VIP guest s were
t reat ed t o an aut ograph session f eat uring KVH, John 5, Benant e and T aylor
and were allowed t o explore t he memorabilia on display, f or a couple hours
bef ore t he general admission guest s. KVH & f riends were also joined on st age
by horror f ilm vet eran Bill Mosley, known f or his role as Chop T op in T exas
Chainsaw Massacre 2, f or apanel discussion and audience Q&A, on t he
select ed t opic of “Horror Movies
Great est Psychopat hs”.
Charact ers in f ull Hollywood st yle horror make-up and cost umes, roamed t he
venue t hroughout t he event . Gladly st opping t o t ake pict ures wit h guest s
and/or scaring t hem t o deat h if t hey weren’t paying at t ent ion. Anot her great
compliment t o t he event were vaudevillian st yle perf ormers, Freak Show
Deluxe, who ent ert ained in bet ween band set s wit h t hrilling f eat s such as
sword swallowing, cont ort ionism and a young lady who drove a 6” nail int o her
nost rils. T here were t -shirt s and ot her promot ional merchandise available f or
sale. A t ent , erect ed in t he parking lot , housed various product vendors and
served as t he ent rance t o t he out door Carnival of Chaos port ion of t he event ,
in which guest could “t ry t heir luck” at winning a prize. Guest vendor ESP
Guit ars also donat ed a beaut if ul cust om guit ar, t hat served as t he grand prize
f or an audience cost ume cont est .
However, t he highlight of t he weekend’s event s, may have been Kirk, John
5, Charlie Benant e and Cory T aylor joining met al juggernaut s High on Fire on
st age Sat urday evening t o t reat at t endees t o a t ruly “Scary Good” All St ar
Jam.
