ROSSMOYNE REFLECTIONS NEWSLETTER NO. 3 Thursday 2nd April Virtue of the Month for April – Tolerance Social Skills - Controlling anger - Ignoring distractions Next Newsletter Friday April 24 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Term concludes on Thursday with the ensuing Easter and school holiday break and resumes Monday 20th April—please note the change to Monday and not Tuesday as initially planned. The term has been full of exciting activity with lots of good learning happening across the school. I have had the opportunity walk in to every classroom during the term and observed the tremendous amount of excellent learning on display. A key feature of positive learning environments is the display of student work so that it can be shared with each other, with other classes and, of course, with parents when they visit the room. It provides the perfect opportunity for feedback and reflection also critical to successful learning. year 5 and 6 students to end the term. In addition two students attended a special leadership forum at Willetton Senior High hosted by local member of parliament Dr Nahan and the Premier Mr The P & C Association conducted two social events for parents—a New Parents Sundowner to welcome new families to the school and a bowling night with Shelley P & C to get the two communities together. As well the P & C has met twice for the term and committed spending to support our iPad program, new reading resources and our school technology program. This is a significant investment that will directly benefit students across the school for which we are extremely grateful. Significant planning for the 50th anniversary of the school has been completed and from next term onwards work will begin in earnest to make this a highly successful and memorable event. Barnett. A survey will be coming home today seeking information about the viability of school holiday programs provided by our after school care provider OSH Club. Please consider and return if you have any interest in this program. Whilst we are sending home hard copies an electronic one will also be on the newsletter page of our website. Year six students were engaged in leadership selection and training and 10 students were selected to attend the annual Grip Student Leadership Conference and the Perth Convention Centre. Zoe and Andrea at the Leadership Conference Key highlights for the term included the following: Assemblies conducted by rooms 20, 21 [in conjunction with LOTE], and 23 with room 10 on the date of publication of this newsletter. They all had significant messages, provided good entertainment and celebrated excellent learning; and having previewed aspects of room 10’s assembly I have no doubt it will be equally so. Harmony Day was a wonderful celebration of the diversity of backgrounds in our school. The photographic displays representing individual and collective harmony were outstanding and of course the family picnic lunch was a real buzz. I have never had so many offers of lovely food in my life!! Sport featured, too, with a focus on swimming. Firstly trials followed by the faction then interschool carnivals all of which were conducted in great spirit. In addition we had in-term swimming for the www.rossmoyneps.wa.edu.au 1 Jacob and Cassie with Dr Nahan and The Premier There have been a number of educational excursions and in school activities throughout the term all of which Year 5 students from room 23 on a CREEC excursion enhance student learning. The year 6 students participated in challenging learning games requiring critical thinking and problem solving with Dr Andy Kirker. Mrs Oliver [music] has purchased some material to make vests for our school orchestra and band to wear when performing. Next term she will be seeking parents who may be able to assist by using the pattern she has available to sew these vests. If you can assist her please make contact with her to let her know you can help. These will be a valuable addition to our performance uniform. Thank you to staff, parents and students for a productive and energetic term one. I hope everyone has a relaxing and refreshing holiday break and look forward to our resumption on Monday 20th April. Teachers and students from non-Chinese backgrounds gained some understanding about Chinese New Year from the assembly. For example, when the character ‘fu’ (meaning ‘Good Fortune’) is displayed upside down on a main door, it represents that good fortune has arrived. The assistants of the God of Wealth handed out the red packets. The gifts inside the red packets do not associate with the number ‘4’ as its pronunciation is associated with the word ‘death’. So many Chinese believe ‘4’ is an unlucky number. The background used for the assembly was art work from various classes to help celebrate the Year of the Goat. The whole assembly really represented the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year, and Room 21 took pride in its contribution! I felt proud to be one of the speakers. By Tammy My favourite experience of our assembly was to perform the lion dance in front of such a big crowd. Hannah and I worked extremely well together. Hannah was very energetic. We had to know when to go slow or fast by listening to the music – it was intense. I loved the cheering around me. It was exciting and was a once in a life time opportunity for me. I loved this activity. By Vuyi I was very excited to be one of the God of Wealth helpers. I was wearing very pretty traditional clothing. I also learnt a lot about the Chinese New Year when Jasmine spoke. Ashlee and I handed out red packets to all the teachers for them to give to their students. I love Vuyi’s and Hannah’s lion dance and the God of Wealth’s costume. I would love to have this experience again! By Georgie My favourite parts of the assembly were that our class sang a song in Chinese and to see the God of Wealth give out the red packets I also loved the Lion Dance by Vuyi and Hannah. By Alylah I felt very happy that I was chosen to speak at our assembly. I loved watching the video of the firecrackers and learnt that fire crackers are usually burned at midnight on New Year’s Eve to welcome the new year. I know everyone learnt some new things about the Chinese New Year. It was an excellent show! It was a very exciting day! By Jasmin The following are the results achieved by our students in the 2015 Year of Goat Art Competition organised by the Rossmoyne and Lynwood Chinese Language Hub: Excellent Awards: Kaylee (Rm 24), Yi Quan (Rm 23), Jasmine (Year 6, Rm 23) and Yaminah ( Rm 26) 5th Place: Tharushi (Room 24) and Markos (Room 26) 2nd Place: Chloe (Room 10) 1st Place: Vevina (Room 24) All the entries are being displayed at the Riverton Shopping Centre during these two weeks. They will then be displayed at the Southlands Shopping Centre for the following two weeks.
