oday was another fun day here at Brookside as we welcomed White Hill students from 6th and 7th grade. Sixth graders from Mrs. Bodle and Mrs. Hickman’s class met up with our 3rd graders to share the endangered species books they researched, wrote and illustrated. Our courtyard was a buzz with students reading and listening about all sorts of fascinating species. Meanwhile, twenty White Hill 7th graders spent a majority of their day here at Brookside fulfilling service learning hours by helping in all K5 classrooms. Each classroom had 1 or 2 assistants on hand to work with students and enjoy recess with them on the yard. They were an amazing set of role models for our students and it is a partnership we hope to continue and build upon for years to come.

alling all book worms! The library is in need of a second set of Harry Potter books, as our one set can't stay on the shelves. It is constantly requested, and Miss Catherine was wondering if anyone had any unwanted ones laying around? Hardcover preferred, but paperback will be mightily appreciated as well! We need Books 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 (our one copy is lost! So we really need this one!) and 7. If you are looking to donate used books, and have any of these series, we would love to receive any of these as well: Nancy Drew #9 + Hardy Boys #9 + Land of Stories Chapter Books by Mike Lupica or Tim Green (i.e. Baseball Great, Football Hero) Magic Tree House #1 20 (our copies are old and worn) D

The collaboration included the Sleepy Hollow Homeowners Association,
Brookside
, San Domenico and Hidden Valley schools and was coordinated by Supervisor Katy Rice's office. Check out their website
http://www.shha.org/SafeStreets.html to find out how to drive more carefully around children and the streets we all share! PLEASE help us keep Our Community SAFE by remembering and following some basic safety guidelines every day: ● ARRIVE EARLY
miss peak traffic snarl up times when driving to school or work. ● NEVER PASS ON THE SHOULDER
it is illegal and dangerous. ● SLOW DOWN AND DO NOT TAILGATE
that slowpoke in front of you is likely going the speed limit! ● LOOK OUT FOR KIDS AT CROSSWALKS AND USING THE BIKE LANES be courteous and stop at crosswalks, slowing down when passing kids on bikes. ● DISTRACTED?
Don’t let the kids/dog/smartphone in your car prevent you from seeing the kids/dogs/cyclist right in front of you! ● PARKING
If you park on Butterfield, please park so that pedestrians and cyclists can pass without being forced into the traffic lane. Please remind your guests or anyone who works on your property to do the same...SHARE THE SHOULDER! ● BE COURTEOUS/RESPECTFUL/POLITE
– treat other drivers as you want to be treated. No road rage, especially on Butterfield! ● LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME!
The best way you can help keep our kids safe and our streets uncongested is to take a GREEN way to school or work if and when possible! 7 Issue #30 May 8, 2015 Parent Club Board Members Julia Chen President [email protected] Stephanie Goldsborough VP [email protected] Liz di Carpegna Secretary di [email protected] Margaret Pizzi Treasurer [email protected] Christina Fitzgibbons Advisor christina [email protected]
Parent Club Corner Every week I think about what I would like to write in the newsletter. There are some weeks I just can’t think of what to write, but feel obligated to write something. So I would spend time finding something inspirational around the internet or through my social networks to write my little message. I was talking to my husband about my dilemma recently and he said to just write… I have nothing to say except enjoy your weekend. Sincerely, Julia Chen Parent Club President Help Your Child Fall in Love with Writing at Brookside This Camp will be lead by our very own beloved teacher Miss Bloyd! SCHOOL BUSSES RETURN TO ROSS VALLEY IN 2015-16!
See below for specifics
After relying for many years on commercial public busses to transport students to and from school,
dedicated school busses will once again be available in Ross Valley, starting August 2015!
More than just a piece of nostalgia for those of us with fond memories of
riding the school bus when we were kids, the new yellow bus service will
be convenient, efficient, student-centered and personalized. Provided by
our partners at Marin Transit through a contract with Michaels
Transportation of Vallejo, students at White Hill, Brookside and Hidden
Valley will soon be able to take advantage of the nation’s safest form of
student transportation, while their parents avoid the hassles and
headaches of navigating rush hour traffic on congested streets like Sir
Frances Drake and Butterfield.
Here’s a quick peek at how our new yellow bus service compares to
today’s transportation provided through Golden Gate Transit:

Last week we announced the cost of bus passes is being finalized, but could be $2.50 per ride. Such
a fare, though already considerably subsidized through Marin Transit, would represent a significant
increase over the current cost of riding the public bus. However, there is a possibility of additional
subsidies to further reduce the daily cost. This is being worked on right now and will hopefully help
bring some needed relief.
Additional information will be sent out in coming weeks in this newsletter, including a planned “FAQ”
(Frequently Asked Questions) with many details. Stay tuned!

Congratulations to all Golden Bell Recipients and Nominees
Each year around this time, school districts throughout Marin County spotlight, recognize and honor those among us
whose work and contributions over the years has earned them a nomination for a “Golden Bell” award. Being
nominated by one’s peers is an award in and of itself, as each district is allowed to put forth a very small and select
number of nominees. Receiving a Golden Bell is even more of an accomplishment and this year we are ecstatic to
report that Assistant Superintendent Marci Trahan is receiving a Golden Bell award as Marin County’s
“Educator of the Year!”
RVSD teachers who will be receiving Golden Bell awards are
Denise Fong – Brookside Elementary
Jenny Guiling – Hidden Valley Elementary
Meredith Williams – Manor Elementary
Nicole Ford – Wade Thomas Elementary
Margie Wilson – White Hill Middle School
Very special congratulations to our nominees in two other Golden Bell categories
Victory Montoya – Manor Elementary & Lori Ross – District Office – Classified Employees of the Year
Annelise Bauer - Trustee of the Year
