Will we give of ourselves to others, so that the world will be richer because we passed through it? Or will we spend our days, as the famous Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote, in stringing and unstringing our instruments, while the song we came to sing remains unsung? The glory of Rotary is that it helps us find a way to sing that song. It guides us on a path to living richer, more meaningful lives, by encouraging us to focus our attention on the things that matter — and helping each of us find our own way to be a gift to the world. If we ask ourselves what characteristics we value most in our friends, most of us would answer similarly: integrity, trustworthiness, caring, compatibility. Our friends are not necessarily the people who are most like us but the ones who complement us, who bring out the best in us. That, to me, is precisely what we can find in Rotary. Rotary is a way to bring out the best part of ourselves, and let it guide our lives. Too often, we spend our days in pursuit of the goals that should matter least. We focus our attention on our own achievements and our own gain; we devote endless energy to the accumulation of material things. Yet at the end of our lives, no one will remember us for the cars we drove, the clothes we wore, the titles we carried, or the offices we sat in. We will not be admired for the efforts we poured into making our own lives richer or our own status higher. In the end, our worth will be measured not by how much we acquired, but by how much we gave away. Will we avert our eyes from suffering, or will we alleviate it? Will we speak words of compassion, or will we act on them? Will we be content only to take from the world — or will we give to it? In the 2015-16 Rotary year, our theme will be Be a Gift to the World. Every one of us has something to give — whoever we are, whatever our place in life. We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities, and our effort; we can give our dedication and our devotion. Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world. It is said that we are born with our fists clenched, but we die with our hands open, and that our talents are the gift that God gave us. What we make of our talents is our gift back to God. Equally we come into this world grasping at everything, but when we leave it, we leave all material things behind as well. Through Rotary, we can leave behind something real and lasting. Our time is now. It will never come again. Be a Gift to the World. K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran President, Rotary International, 2015-16 THE ROTARY CLUB OF DELORAINE WHAT’S HAPPENING and WHEN?? An English professor wrote the words: “A woman without her man is nothing” on the chalkboard and asked his students to punctuate it correctly. All the MALES in the class wrote: “A woman, without her man, is nothing.” All the FEMALES in the class wrote: “A woman: without her, man is nothing.” (punctuation is powerful!) Early this year a sub-committee of John Christie, Cindy Watkins, Andrew and Stephanie Johnston, Katie Wightman (one of last year‘s judges) and myself was set up to consider establishing a new award which we would like to call ―The Spirit of Tasmania Award‖. The prize is worth $5,000 and is open to resident Tasmanians and honours makers, small business owners and creative entrepreneurs in the fields of crafts, designs and style. The sub-committee was headed by John Christie who put many hours into establishing the criteria for the award and he deserves our heartfelt thanks for producing a fantastic award. Bob Catchpole, fine-tuned everything and we have now submitted our application for sponsorship to Spirit of Tasmania. Their sponsorship committee will meet later this month and we are very hopeful the award will get up in time for the 2015 TCF. The details of the Spirit of Tasmania Award are attached. Most of the hessian has been given away but we still have more we would like to get rid of and if no one comes forward soon, I shall dispose of it at the tip. We have also sold a lot of the old blue tables but there are more yet we need to get rid of. We have been advertising on gum-tree through which most of our tables have been sold. Discussions have been taking place with the Showground committee to discuss what will happen in 2016 when our current rental arrangement with them runs out. The talks have been very positive and we will have a further meeting with them in June where it is hoped and expected that we will be able to finalise arrangements for the next 5 years or more. Talks have begun on the establishment of a new website which will be more mobile and social media friendly and which we would like to have in place by January 2016. We envisage that this will go out to tender in the next two months. A subcommittee is being set up to prepare for this change. Maree Matanle Tasmanian Craft Fair Director The committee took on the responsibility of keeping the website up-to-date and answering any enquiries which came through this medium. It is recommended that going forward the committee continues this role. To connect with the younger members of the community, one of the committee members, Lois Beckwith, initiated a public forum where a well-known Beyond Blue representative could talk about dealing with depression. What resulted was co-operation between the Rotary Club, Beyond Blue, the Deloraine Football Club and the Deloraine District Hospital to discuss this important issue with a large number of local young men. A very successful night ensued. Hopefully in the future the committee can initiate similar events which raise the club‘s profile as one concerned with its community. THE ROTARY CLUB OF DELORAINE INC. Chartered 5th March, 1957 Assembly: Bush Inn Hotel ~~ Tuesday 6.15 for 6.30p.m. (Postal Address: P.O. Box 85, Deloraine Tas 7304) ANNUAL REPORTS In concluding, I would like to thank all the committee members and other club members who assisted me during the year. Tim Biggs PR & Membership Director TCF REPORT This year the TCF committee has paid $90,000 to Rotary, being the profit from the 2014 Craft Fair. Early in the year expressions of interest were called for within the Rotary Club of Deloraine for the position of Director-Elect for the Craft Fair and two applications were received. From these two, Tim Biggs was selected to be the Director for 2016, taking over the role on 1st January, 2016. Applications for stallholders for 2015 closed on 1st April, but we are still receiving late requests which are going on to a wait list for the time being. A sub-committee of Tim Biggs, Cindy Watkins, Ann Axelsen and myself, has gone through the new applications for this year and shortly confirmation letters will go out to the successful applicants. Numbers at this stage look to be similar to last year. BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2014-2015 President ......................................... Immediate Past President ........ Michael Horne Isabelle Vescovo Rob van der Elst Roy Axelsen Bev Ritchie Peter Griffin Ann Axelsen Cindy Watkins Lesley Dare Tim Biggs Maree Matanle PRESIDENTS’ REPORT Soon after I was inducted last year, a Past President asked me ―How is it all going?‖ My reply was that I was astonished at how much was happening and how many Rotary activities there are on the go at any one time. This is a very active Club! However, my job as President has been made smooth by a very supportive and effective Board and by the people who have stepped up to tasks when I have called for volunteers. Each Board member has reported the details of their portfolio in their Annual Reports, but I would like to place on record my thanks to this dedicated and hard-working group of people: Roy Axelsen, Bev Ritchie, Rob van der Elst, Peter Griffin, Ann Axelsen, Cindy Watkins, Lesley Dare, Tim Biggs, Maree Matanle and Isabelle Vescovo. contributions to the Club and who have had multiple demanding roles over a period of time. Honorary Members do not have to meet any attendance requirements nor pay membership fees, but can wear a special Rotary badge. It was pleasing to welcome five members into Friends of Rotary and two into the Honorary Membership category. However, only one person joined the club as an official Rotarian. More can be done by current club members to invite and encourage new members. Public Relations Considerable effort was put into making the community more aware of the Club and its activities. These included: A monthly ad was placed in the Meander Valley Gazette to catch the eye of any Rotarians moving into the district. This was also a means to support the Gazette as a valuable community ―noticeboard‖ and to give press releases from the club a favourable outcome. Stories were provided (and published) in the Gazette almost every month covering Rotary activities such as Learn-toSwim, RYDA, Wildwood and Youth Exchange Secretary Roy is standing down at this changeover, so I would like to particularly record the Club‘s thanks for his many years of service in this position. Roy has an outstanding knowledge of Rotary procedures and traditions and he has been unfailingly helpful to me during the last year. Thank you Roy for a job well done, and enjoy the break! In addition to these Board members, there are several others I would like to thank for their help during the year. As well as serving as Youth Service Director, Ann Axelsen also publishes the Club Bulletin. Each week it is out on time and it is full of accurate and interesting information, pictures and some humour. Thank you Ann for an outstanding job. A stall was set up at Woolworth‘s supermarket on 6 occasions to promote Rotary generally and some of our activities in particular. After members of the general public asked what we were collecting for at the first outing, a donation box was set up and over $500 was collected over the year in this way. It demonstrated how positively Rotary is seen by the general public. The committee‘s budget was used to improve the club‘s visual appearance by providing shirts and hats to members and purchasing new banners to be used at public events A goodwill mission from our District visited India in October and included Marc and Jan Smith and John and myself. This was a wonderful experience to see another country and enjoy the friendship of fellow Rotarians. Ross Scott has arranged an excellent group of speakers and activities for the year. This is a ‗behind the scenes‘ job, but it has been run very smoothly and has given us a most interesting programme. We gave a donation of $1,000 to Polio Plus to help end polio and $1,000 to Australian Rotary Health. Similarly, thanks to Steen Andersen and Wayne Richardson for ensuring that the PA system and all the bits and pieces we need for our meetings are out in place and then packed away again each week. We also assisted the Rotary club of Westbury with $1,000 to cover the cost of the freight for a 40ft container to the Philippines which will contain hospital beds and sundry equipment such as walking frames, school desks, chairs and school books. I would like to thank my committee for their support during the year and look forward to assisting our new director, Lois Beckwith with any help she may need. Lesley Dare International Service Director PR & MEMBERSHIP REPORT Membership A number of policy changes were made to the Club‘s membership policy, including: Although Isabelle Vescovo has been sidelined by health issues for much of the year, I want to place on record our appreciation for the work she has done with upgrading the Rotary Pavilion. This building is a major asset for our Club and during this Rotary year, I have encouraged the development of a long-term plan for its management. Our sincere thanks to Ian Knight for all of your work over the years and to Michael Plunkett for stepping up to chair the Pavilion Committee. We now have a formal development plan in place and I hope this continues to serve us well into the future. As I said at the beginning, a lot has happened during the year, but some of the highlights for me have been: the outstanding 2014 Craft Fair, despite the very ordinary weather; Starting a new category called Friends of Rotary. Members of this category do not have to meet any attendance requirements nor pay membership dues. It is seen as a ―stepping stone‖ for potential members to get to know the club. the introduction of Friends of Rotary; The Rule of 85 for long-standing members was refined so that it is no longer to apply indefinitely, but more for extended absence due to ill-health. the improvements to the Rotary Pavilion and the preparation of the development plan for this asset; The Honorary Membership category is now to be used to recognise past Rotarians and current Rotarians who find it difficult to attend the required number of meetings due to declining health with a long-term condition. The award is to be conferred on persons who have made extraordinary the awarding of Paul Harris Fellowships to Jenny Dornauf and Judith Chamberlain; the combined dinner with the Inner Wheel Club; the induction of Anne Forsyth as our newest member; and the success of the 2015 Model United Nations Assembly. Thank you again to Annette Viney for your dedication to this project, undertaken in addition to holding the position of Assistant Governor. The Rotary International theme for 2014-15 was - Light Up Rotary - and I am confident that we have done this in the Deloraine Club. I wish incoming President Rob van der Elst and his new Board all the best for the year ahead. In addition, we wish District Governor John Dare all the best for 2015-16, including hosting the District Conference in Deloraine in April 2016. Michael Horne President 2014/2015 SECRETARY’S REPORT During the 2014-15 Rotary the following changes to membership occurred:New Members: Anne Forsyth (classification - Vocational Rehabilitation) Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions: Jenny Dornauf Judith Chamberlain Resignations: Peter Willis Gayle Gerrard (due to ill health) Honorary Members: It is expected that two past Rotarians will become Honorary Rotarians in July 2015. Roy Axelsen Secretary INTERNATIONAL SERVICE REPORT This year the world has experienced a number of devastating occurrences. These included the cyclone in Vanuatu and the Earthquake in Nepal. In both cases our committee has endeavoured to help those in need. During the year we have been planning to help build a water harvesting structure in Vanuatu. This project developed into a much larger project which included the water harvesting and sanitation structure, plus a small boat building facility and a solar powered refrigeration unit. The global grant was lodged in early May and this project will now extend into the next Rotary year with funds being quarantined to cover this project. We are still planning on sending a small team to help with the building project, plus a rural health nurse/expert to train the village trainers in good sanitation procedures. Fortunately the island of Santo where the project is envisioned did not suffer too much damage from the cyclone. We also held an information day outside Woolworths at the end of March on International projects that Rotary have been involved in and donations received from the public where matched by the club and sent to the RAWCS project raising money for Vanuatu. On hearing of the earthquake in Nepal, the committee decided to donate $2,000 to Shelterbox for the purchase of two boxes for Nepal. Earlier in the year we had applied for a matching grant of $2,000 towards the Eye Clinic in Nepal and Annette Viney joined the team in Nepal to witness this camp in February. The club gave $5,000 to the Rotary Foundation. The club home hosted a Friendship Exchange team from Sweden in February and a team from Tasmania, including A ndr ew and Stephanie Johnston, visited Sweden in April. COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT This was my first year with the Club as a Director of a Committee. I have found the experience to be rewarding and enjoyable. We have had the pleasure of helping many groups and individuals throughout the year. These include the following Australian Rotary Health Fund, Amber Hammond, Beyond Blue, Deloraine House, Giant Steps with a new bus, Swags for the homeless, Rotaract Sandy Bay, The Webber Family, Winter Fire and The Wild Wood. The big one for me was the Liffey Falls Toilet rebuild. The money donated by our Club for this project was used to partly purchase the modular toilet block. If we had not offered to help with funding, the government would not have come to the party at all to rebuild. Our input made it possible for the Parks Department to push the project through. This work is still in progress, but we now have all the money needed to finish the project. I am hoping that the Club will be able to help with some of the landscaping when they get to that stage. The new toilets will provide a much needed service at this very popular local attraction, plus stop human waste getting into the water system. Money was also given for the swimming pool at the Deloraine Primary School, but this was a project carried over from a previous year. It is a very rewarding experience to be part of being able to help people and organisations with financial assistance in our community. Thank you to all the members on the Community Services Committee for your guidance and input. Cindy Watkins Community Service Director TREASURER’S REPORT Treasurer‘s Report for the year 2015 is as follows. It is as up-to-date as it can be. Figures are not quite complete, but will be at the end of June when the Auditor will check the accounts and give a report later in the year. Thank you to the Presidents of the General Assembly, Peter Griffin, John Dare and John Christie on a “job well done” and Dawn Valance, for her assistance to the President of the Assembly. I thank my daughter Emma for the resolutions. I also thank Ann Axelsen and John Dare for their contribution on the projector. We are currently following up possible improvements to disabled access at the Bush Inn and hopefully some fine tuning to the rear entrance will be made during the coming year. Our caterers, Inner Wheel and Deloraine Primary School Parents & Friends, once again provided us with their usual high standard meals. The Rotary Pavilion Committee, headed by Michael Plunkett, is continuing its work on developing a business plan for this facility. Once a reasonably clear picture of the market is established, further work will be done to address the various renovation options and their costs for evaluation by the Club. The 48 students representing 24 nations were well researched on the resolutions. After a nervous start some very good debates ensued representing their countries views with confidence. I believe the delegates bonded quickly and it assisted in the spirit of the debates. All 18 resolutions were completed. Our thanks to Ian Knight, who initially headed this committee, for his tireless efforts related to future developments of the Pavilion. Rob van der Elst Club Service Director VOCATIONAL SERVICE REPORT Barista Course The year began with the Club sponsoring a creative new project that saw two Barista Courses run in Deloraine. Many thanks to Tim Biggs for piloting this innovation, which should assist local businesses in the Tourism and Hospitality sector to reward customers from near and far with a memorable gourmet experience. TASTA Awards ($4,000) The Vocational Student of the year is Alison Rogers. Alison is Executive Advisor at Pulse Business Services where she oversees the sales, marketing and business advisory divisions. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with the interaction of students forming lasting friendships and they were a credit to their school with exemplary behaviour. Winners of the Model United Nations Assembly 2015: Dakoda Titmus and Dylan SeckoldBamford representing China from Scottsdale High School. Who will now participate at the National Model United Nations in Canberra in August. National Costume: Phoebe Michelle Rouse and Alec Rawlings representing Spain from Marist Regional College. Thank you to all Rotarians and partners for your assistance with MUNA and all Youth Service projects throughout the year. To President Michael, thank you for your leadership and support of Club projects throughout the year. Ann Axelsen Youth Service Director donation of $10,000 towards the purchase of a larger bus, which would assist staff with transport to and from school, and various outing. We were able to hand over the cheque during May, and Giant Steps have our logo on the bus. Alison is a Board Member of Whitelion Inc, a national not-forprofit organisation committed to mentoring, educating and finding employment solutions for young people who have become disconnected. Two of our major events during the year were ―Learn-to-Swim‖ and ―Model United Nations Assembly‖. Alison represented Tasmania at the National Training Awards in Adelaide in November. PP Gayle Gerrard continues to co-ordinate the ―Learn-to-Swim‖ and for this I thank her. Kali Bierns with her mother (or a friend) have been our instructors now for a number of years, and they carry out this task extremely well. Tertiary Scholarship ($3,000) We continue to advertise the Learn-to-Swim as extensively as possible, sending information to Schools for inclusion in their Newsletters, advertising posters in shop windows and word-ofmouth. Skye is currently undertaking a combined Commerce/Law Degree at Bond University on the Gold Coast. Each year the number attending is between 70 – 80. Those attending are aged from 5-14 years. Many of the local children tend to commence the programme at beginner level and continue until they have completed the advanced level and are high school age. Participants are presented with a certificate at the conclusion of the programme. At the conclusion of the ―Learn-to-Swim‖ programme an article and photographs appeared in the Examiner, again promoting Rotary and what we do in the community. Thank you to all who assisted in anyway with the annual ―Learn-toSwim‖. Thank you to PP Annette for your organisation and running of our 267th Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). Part of PP Annette‘s report of MUNA stated: I acknowledge the hours, expense and effort put into MUNA by myself and all Deloraine Rotarians, Inner Wheel, Deloraine Primary School. I thank you for your assistance in many ways over the weekend, hosting, helping with setting up, clean-up or the general running of the weekend. This Scholarship is for a student beginning their first year of Tertiary Study. The 2015 recipient is Skye Ranicar. Skye visited the Club during May, and has assisted at past Craft Fairs. Vocational Trip to Turkey ($2,300) This year District 9830 partnered Rotary in Turkey in an exchange of teams of young professionals. Our outgoing team comprised people with expertise in Engineering, Architecture and Archaeology visiting Turkey for three weeks in April. Hannah Atkins our Club‘s nomination, was a member of the team. Hannah has a long association with Rotary having attended RYPEN and RYLA and being a Rotaract members. Hannah was the recipient of the 2007 Tertiary Scholarship. Vocational Visit The Club was hosted on a Vocational visit by Rotarians Cindy & Chris at “Elemental Artspace” early in February 2015. Rotarians enjoyed finger-food and drink, followed by the opening of an Art Exhibition by Bill Flowers—the “Snake Artist” Peter Griffin Vocational Service Director YOUTH SERVICE REPORT Once again, Youth Service have had another busy Rotary year. It began with the planning at the beginning of the year - what projects to be involved in, what and who to support, to organise and be part of Rotary programmes. During this past year we continued with Monthly Committee meetings and regular reports were given at our Dinner Meetings, and included in our weekly Bulletin. When donations were given to individuals or groups, we tried to invite them along to our meetings as a guest speaker. This gave us all first-hand information of what they were trying to do and to achieve and to help promote Rotary and how we assist in the community. There were a number of Rotary organised programmes that we were able to take part in, and to organise representatives to attend. Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) was again held at Symons Plains in October of 2014. An opportunity to support year 10 students and to give them the basics with regards to the driving, what to watch out for, what can happen if rules and regulations are not obeyed, and much more. This is a worthwhile Rotary project, and my thanks to Rotarians who offered to attend and help out with this project, especially as it is usually held just prior to the TCF and we are all busy. We once again supported students to attend the Science Experience during January. Three students attended – Oliver, Hayley and Merlin. They attended a Dinner Meeting in May and spoke to the Club about their time at the Science Experience - what they gained from it, how it helped them to decide their future directions, and all in all what a great experience it was to mix with others at this kind of gathering. We did not have any representatives attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) held in Canberra, January of each year, the Rotary Youth Progamme of Enrichment (RYPEN) held at Camp Clayton in May. Suggested names were sought for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), but due to the fact that we did not receive the application forms, and they had more than enough participants, we did not send anyone. Hopefully this can be rectified in the coming year, and that the application and information will be received in plenty of time. Our Youth Exchangee, Lillie Walker, returned home in January after spending 12 months in Belgium. Lillie attended a Club meeting in June and spoke to the Club regarding her time as an Exchangee. From all accounts she enjoyed the experience and gained much from her 12 months as an Exchangee – a great ambassador for Rotary and our Club. Within our community we continued to support many of the local events that we have supported over many years. These included the Youth Drama Festival, Junior Basketball, the Deloraine Show Society. These events also provided a good opportunity to promote Rotary and our involvement in the community. As we have in the past, we made a donation to all our local schools, for their end of year awards. Rotarians attended the end-of -year assemblies, and presented awards to the local students. Again promoting Rotary within our district. To all who attended these assemblies -- Thank you. This year it was an initiative of the Membership and PR Committee to have ―Information Stalls‖ outside the Supermarket on a regular basis. Early in December Youth Service ‗manned‘ one of these stalls. Our main aim for the day was to promote Youth related activities and in particular the Learn-to-Swim programme held each year. Although we were not raising funds on this day, we did put a donation box out for Giant Steps – where we raised $125.00. The Club matched this and we were able to present them with a cheque for $250.00. Our involvement with Giant Steps this year involved the sponsoring of a student for one term, also along with Community Service we co-sponsored a
