Active Care Planning: It's About the Conversation
Advance Care Planning is a process that helps you:
 Think about your health care values and goals;
 Consider health care choices you may have to make in the future;
 Talk about your choices with your doctor and loved ones; and
 Make a written plan ( advance directive document) for the future.
What if a sudden illness or injury left you unable to speak for yourself? Who would you want
to speak for you? It may not be a spouse/partner but a close friend or family member. What

would you want them to know about your values, beliefs, wishes? What don't you want?
Join us next week, on April 22, at the Inn on the Park when Jim Jaeger and Sandy Nuernberg

present a thought-provoking conversation to help make your wishes known. Learn vocabulary,
reflect on your values, choose a health care agent, and explore goals for treatment as well as
take the firststeps toward completing an advance directive.

Jim Jaeger serves as a night chaplain at Meriter Hospital and is a member of several local
Universalist Fellowship groups. He is an ambassador and facilitator in the Advance Care
Planning (ACP) program, “Honoring Choices,” sponsored by the Wisconsin Medical Society
and currently is the moderator of the Association of Spiritual Caregivers (ASC) at Meriter. Jim

practiced law in Madison for many years focused on tax, estate planning and elder law. He is
retired from practice and enjoys his family, especially his two sons and his grandchildren.
Sandy Nuernberg is a second career ordained Presbyterian pastor, PC (USA) in the John
Knox Presbytery. She is also an ambassador and facilitator in the ACP program, and just
completed a six-year term as ASC Secretary/Treasurer at Meriter Hospital. Sandy is presently involved in active one-on-one
ministry, adult education, leading worship/communion in facilities for older populations, weekly prison ministry and clergy
leadership/involvement in racial disparity in the Madison area. She is an avid UW Badger fan and enjoys family, golf and
gardening.

Next in Madison: StartingBlock Madison
George Austin, Madison’s former Planning and Development director and President of AVA Civic Enterprises Inc.,
provided the introduction about what StartingBlock Madison is planning to do to encourage, develop and grow
entrepreneurs by bringing them into an entrepreneur hub that will place them in contact with peers, mentors, investors and
consultants.
The building will be located in the 800 block of East Washington Avenue, and American Family Insurance is funding the
construction of the first 50,000 sq. ft. phase of a 160,000 sq. ft. building.

Founded in 2012, StartingBlock Madison is dedicated to encouraging entrepreneurs, growing Madison’s economy and
providing educational opportunities regarding entrepreneurism. It will be able to do this because of the strong support of
MG&E Energy and American Family Insurance.
Dan Reed, Managing Director of American Family Ventures, spoke about his company’s investments in new technology
companies in areas like automobile safety through their Direct Venture Capital program. Their support of StartingBlock
Madison is an extension of this concept.
Gary Wolter, Chairman & CEO of MGE Energy Inc., sees StartingBlock Madison as expanding the Madison
entrepreneurship environment and helping to grow the economy. He explained the stretch goal as “how can I change the
world?” and sited those Madison entrepreneurs that have done that such as Jamie Thompson’s Cellular Dynamics,
Pleasant Rowland’s American Girl and Judy Faulkner’s Epic.
The positive response to the three presenters and the concept of StartingBlock Madison that represents the combined
efforts of corporate, educational, and civic entities including the City of Madison suggests StartingBlock and the
entrepreneurs it cultivates are sure to be successful.

Senior Service Guest Sister Georgeann Roudebush

Today we recognize Sister Georgeann Roudebush for her years of helping
make our community a better place to live, work, play….and die. Her tireless
efforts to support many extraordinary causes demonstrates how she gives back
her time, talent and compassion to help achieve a quality standard of life for all
of us.
Sister’s role as a chaplain at Home Health United Hospice knows no limits,
exemplified by her efforts to bring peace, comfort, grace and dignity to patients
and their families. Her leadership of 13 chaplains at HospiceCare set the gold
standard earning a commendation from the accrediting body for the processional
she instituted to show respect to deceased patients.
Sister’s long list of ongoing commitments far exceeds hospice. For over 20
years, Sister has been a night chaplain at Meriter, a mentor to chaplain interns,
residents and new staff, and serves as a Chaplain Leader, facilitating the board
certification process for new chaplains.
Sister supports the Dane County funeral directors being available to preside at services. She is an active member of the
Association of Spiritual Caregivers in Dane County and the Greater Madison Area Chaplains. Georgeann conducts the
invocation for Badger Honor Flights, and she frequently plays her trumpet at funerals for service men and women.
Sister gives her time and expertise to the state hospice organization and presents at the Conference for the Episcopal
Diocese of Milwaukee. She volunteers her time for DAIS and other Dane County nonprofits.
Over the years, Sister has participated in mission work, taking her skills to support third world communities. Georgeann is
a Wisconsin sports fan, starting with Waunakee teams to the Badgers and Packers.
Georgeann is truly an unsung hero! She has devoted her life to teaching,.especially on topics that the public generally
fears or avoids.
We are honored to present Sister Georgeann with our Rotary Club of Madison Senior Service Award.

Rotary Scholars Seeking Employment Opportunities
Each year, we have approximately 80 students receiving scholarship support through named scholarship funds within our
Madison Rotary Foundation. In addition to the scholarship support our Foundation provides, our Scholarship Committee is
trying to help connect our scholars to short-term jobs and internships. Jacqui Sakowski is leading this effort this year. This
week, we are featuring the following two scholars:
Sergio Becerra Ramirez is Majoring in Criminology and Law, with minors in Biology and Social
Welfare, and will graduate from Marquette in December 2016. He is passionately committed to
joining the DEA and welcomes any internship or employment opportunities that can aid him in
securing his goal. With the number of attorney’s in this room, I’m sure someone must have the right
contacts at DOJ! Fluent in English and Spanish, Sergio is proficient in French, as well as claiming
teamwork, leadership, communication, Microsoft Office, MD Adams R3, SPSS and ProCSI, among
his employable skills. Sergio has transportation and is available for work in either Madison or
Milwaukee from mid-May through end of August. Brian Basken is his mentor.
Emily Gallagher-Schmitz is a sophomore majoring in journalism at UW-Milwaukee. While she is
developing her writing skills, her keenest interest lies in broadcast and entertainment journalism.
Among Emily’s skills she includes Social Media, Microsoft Office, and Photoshop as well as being
good with people, which is pretty handy in a journalist, and in organizing. If you need to plan and
execute a campaign, Emily could be just the person to get your message out. She would be
happy to continue in the fall if needed. So media, marketing and PR friends, what can you do to
help Emily along her path?! Based in Sun Prairie she has transportation, and is happy to
commute a reasonable distance this summer break. Mary Rouse is Emily’s mentor.

First Hike of the 2015 Season – Aldo Leopold Nature Center in Black Earth

On Saturday, April 11, the Hiking Fellowship Group
enjoyed its first hike of the season organized by
Rotarian Karl Gutknecht with Bob Miller, President
and Executive director of the Aldo Leopold Nature
Center, and board member and Rotarian Deb Gilpin
on hand at the Black Earth location. What a wonderful
way for over 25 Rotarians and friends and two dogs to
welcome spring! Bob provided background on the 38
acre site in front of the Leopold Lodge that can be
rented for camping trips, meetings,etc. An excellent
location for our group photo too.
The site has wonderful hiking trails. We hiked the first
loop, about 1.5 miles consisting of mature woods, and
rocky outcroppings. This path had somewhat steep
terrain that took us high in the treetops before winding down into the valley. Once at the bottom, Bob shared stories of
several scouting troops who rent out the site to test for hiking badges and other camping adventures. We embarked on the
second loop which was about 1 mile. This path was not as steep as the first and had a fire pit and council ring at the top.
Our hike concluded with a picnic lunch on the wooded deck of the Alexander Studio. The studio has high cathedral
ceilings, a center stage and originally served as a rebirthing center in the early 1970’s.
It was a beautiful day and great location to kick off the hiking season. Bob invited us all to visit the Monona Aldo Leopold
Nature Center later this summer.

Action By Directors
The following, proposed as new members, were favorably considered by the Directors at a recent meeting. Members are
accorded a period of ten days within which objections may be filed in writing, stating the specific reason for the objection
and signed by the objecting member, and sent to the Executive Director in the Rotary office. Consideration of a
membership proposal is to be kept confidential, and members should not discuss membership with any listed candidate at
this time. After the ten-day period, the sponsors will be notified of the status of the candidate.
